Being a goth involves...?

    Hey hey! :D
Ok,here's the thing, black is my favourite colour and hence I wear it a lot.
However, over the past year or so I've been getting a lot of people telling me I look like a goth.
Now,I have dark hair and pale skin but that's about it really!

Anyway, some guy at a party came up to me last week and said
" My brother would love you". When I asked why he said
    "He's into all that ****"
"What ****? Black?",I asked,to which he responded "Led Zepplin and all that rock ****"
Now,I'm not saying I'm not a fan but, tbh, my taste in music is pretty eclectic and I don't wear black because of any musical influence,I just ****in like it!

So what I'm really asking here is what does it mean to be a goth?
When I wear my black, what is it that people think I believe in or support?
Is anyone here one of them?
Is it anything to do with sacrificing pigs? :p

well firstly what kinda goth listens to led zepplin ?
And well being a goth involves long hair, matrix syle jackets, and being in a bad mood all day

I dunno tbh,I don't know what they listen to but the dude seemed to associate goths with zepplin.

being a goth involves, not from personal experience or anything :o

    1. Wearing dark clothes obviously,
    2. Loving nearly all forms of Rock Music,
    3. Being a loner in school, although goths nowadays tend to stick together.
    4. General acting rather "hippyish"
    5. Occasionaly doing drugs, although they kinda have rep that do em big time, but i'd say theyre not as bad as theyre percived.
    6. Pretending to worship the devil, satan the occult etc.
    7. Being very moody
    8. Not liking the sun too much, they much rather, caves etc :D ie. the dark
    9. Basically its a phase, some of them for some reason seems to be very good at maths, me for instance was a "middle of the road" kinda guy in school, friends with the popular kids and the nerd and geeks, goths etc. then i discovered boards and became a computer geek

no no, goths listen to more Drowning Pool and SOAD and ****e like that, rockers and heavy metalers listen to Zeppelin and Sabbath. well Goth is really more of a generalisation, like a chav I mean what exactly defines a chav?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,122 ✭✭✭LadyJ

Maybe it's cause I have a kind of a pouty look but that's not because I'm moody,I'm just not an overly smiley person!

I thought goths listened to Sisters Of Mercy, Fields Of Neiphelim (sp?) and the Cure and stuff. Really bad music imo.

And then there is modern goths who listen to Lacuna Coil, NIghtwish, Tristiana and the like, generally female fronted bands. Then there is "Goths" who listen to HIM (pants), Marilyn Manson (old stuff rocks) and Slipknot (boring). That is my definition, but i could be wrong. ALso, i dont give a toss what anyone wears. Or listens too.

They also particulary like listening to Richie Kavanagh :D:D

Goths and the Gothic in general has completely lost its way in modern times, it originated in the Middle Ages in Germany.

People who call you a goth are scared of what is different, quite simply.

True. And I don't particularly care what people think,I just want to know exactly what the connotations are.

Good stuff so. You shouldn't wear so much black during the summer months though, its a great conductor of heat.

Learn how to mime, and be depressed a lot... oh and go on about how different you want to be, just like all the other goths.

Most definitely true, that anyone who calls you a goth, is a clown. Its a generalisation these days, for all the young guys and gals who hang out in town wearing their brothers slipknot and manson tops.
However, there is a flipside. Being a girl goth can be good. I dunno theres just something about them that suggests sexiness.

It sounds like he was calling you a rock chick, not a goth. In fact, if that conversation isn't paraphrased, the word goth isn't anywhere in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,122 ✭✭✭LadyJ

Well,it's not like I'm 15 or anything! Christ,I'm nearly 20 and I don't hang around central bank! I just like black! Black coats, skirts, tops, the occasional corset maybe but that's about all these "assumers" have to go on!

Yeah but it's only one example, sorry!
I was just trying to explain the kind of assumptions people make about me.
I have been asked if I'm a goth numerous times though

i dont agree with this. ive been called a goth on the oft quite simply because i dyed my hair black and i dont cut it short. but these people arent afraid of me or whats different. actually, some are acquaintences (is that spelled right?). however, if im called a "mosher", which is used in a derogatory sense, then i get p*ssed. you wont like me when im p*ssed.

Goths in Galway City are just kids who are afraid to be individual.
Being individual is noble quality in a youth it shows intelligence and maturity imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭acri

That another thing. being a goth because you want to be "individual" is b*llocks. theres nothing "individual" about it. how the hell can you be different like everyone else!?

I was out one night in a lil black skirt, black knee-high boots and a Playboy bunny top (it was black and pink). This stupid ass girl says to me "ehh ... you a goth?!" I was like "what the hell!! Whatever happened to the little black dress outfit?!"

I mean for god's sake! In fact, I couldn't be more ungoth, my wardrobe has probably the most insane array of bright colours that is remotely possible. I wear bright clothes a lot, and I never dress like a goth. What a dumbass she was - just because I was wearing a "little black dress" ensemble, she automatically thought I was a goth.

Oh some people .... sooooo stupid!

I'm kinda goth. If I had the money for it I'd be a full blown goth, its damn expensive ****! I get called a Krusty which is actually a term from the 70's meaning hippie. I wear almost always all black, ivory foundation, heavy black eyes/lips, my hair is always changing but always a dark puple/black sorta colour, sometimes peroxided pink. I listen to black metal and standard classic rock but the heavier the better. I do have some illuminas clothes too that I wear like illuminas pink parachute pants and bright green t-shirts but most of my wardrobe is blackk as is my make up. But its not all about that and goths dont pretend to worship the devil/occult, some do some dont, I personaly am wiccan and have no Christian belief at all. Having said that I have respect for those who do believe it. Being goth isnt just sbout your clothes its about your standing in life people nowadays (usually scumbags who say "State a you! I'll bate ya! Won't we lads?!") are just too thick to know the real deffinitions of different "groups" so to speak.
Also we're not loners! most of the reasons that poster listed are so stereotypical learn a bit more next time please.

I like some goth clothes. I'm partial to goth women on occasion. Some goth music is good.

But I've never been a goth. Could never really summon the energy to make enough of an effort that comes with the lifestyle. And I never got the whole depression is cool thing for some reason ;)

thats just totally wrong right there...mini metallers listen to soad and drowning pool.
Goth girls are fugging hot, some goth music i love i.e. joy division, all in all i dont have a rpoblem with them apart from the pretentious stuck up twatty ones that used to inhabit fibbers back in the day.

Why do goth chicks wear trousers with skirts over them? And why are they so enthusiastically angry all the time?

I think that is wrong, I listen to the likes of System of a down and Drowning Pool, that is good music, but I am not a goth, or a teenage rocker....its just down to personal taste i guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

OP - I wouldnt read too far into it TBH.

It seems to be a general stereotype by narrow minded people that EVERYONE who listens to any kind of rock/metal/punk etc is automatically reffered to as a "goth" these days.

    Example -
Was picking up my lil' bro from school the other day sitting in the car waiting for him and got talking to some girls standing nearby. Had hatebreed (i think, cant really remember now) playing in the car and one of them asks - "Whats that you got on ?" - So i tell her what it is and she looks at me and says "Oh right so your one of them goths then ?" - and for the record i wasnt wearing any black (white/black runners, blue jeans, white/blue quiksilver t-shirt), dont have long hair etc etc.

So obviously the assumptions of "goth-ness" works on either your musical tastes OR the way you dress.

kk i know a few of the goth tpes and yeah the do tend to wear the above stuff.

But from what i remember being a goth is about the joy of life, they try to experence life for what it is, and the makeup and stuff is a way of making life a touch more dramatic ... now i could be wrong but this has been said to me by a few of my goth m8's.

I just take people as they are, no one is perfect , so we all have our faults..

Mine happens to be spending too much time on internet forums  :p

Conductor?!?! Go look up the meaning, heat doesn't travel down or through black. I think you mean black absorbs light the opposite being white that reflects light.

On Point: There is Gothic and Nu Rock. Pretty much the same but Nu rock is the heavier goth music like Slipknot etc.. where as goth seems to be more like Sisters of Mercy etc.
Most of the current kids are Nu Rock as the Goth scene really stems from the late 70's early 80's.
I was called a Goth when a teenager but was not into it at all. Unless you are in the circle of the scene it's hard to tell. Now people think I am an old hippy.

I would consider Slipknot to be a manufatured boy band.

    goth, noun.
    1. A style of rock music that often evokes bleak, lugubrious imagery.
    2. A performer or follower of this style of music.

    Gothic
emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate.

I'm confused if these are minies and goths listen to cradle of filth what am i? my music tates range from mid ninties dance back to seventies rock and a fair dose of nu metal like system, drowning pool as well as a touch of 80 old skool stuff by metallica & slayer, lately i've started listening to the road runner produced screamo metal like trivium, soulfly and atreyu! what does that make me, and as for the clothes what am i if i'm wearing chords and t shirts? I always thought goths were those thirteen year olds the wear the long black clothes and hate their parents? i didn't know it graduated over to adulthood! Is marilyn manson a goth? i always classed him as a shock rocker who dresses to make you think while at the same time to cause controversy to plug more records
