For me its the TR6 - once you get a good one to start with they are one of the most entertaining classics. Nice to drive, easy to work on and an easy supply of new parts at reasonably cheap prices.
Only thing that can be a bit of a trial is the lucas mechanical fuel injection system - nobody in Ireland knows anything about it.
But as a classic you can't beat it IMO :D

the TR6 is a nice car so much fun to drive compared to some of the more boring models nowadays, driving should always be fun!

The Porsche 959, an under-rated 1980's supercar. Admittedly a modern day 911 Turbo would probably out-perform it but I've always liked the 959.

I also like most 1970's and 1980's Ferraris - the 308 and 328, and the Mondial convertible.

the Tatra 603 could kinda pass for a trendy hearse, well at least if it was black! ;)

Bugatti Royale every time. Probably getting tricky to find an affordable one what with only six in the world and the French National car Museum owning four of those....

I know I'm a little biased but it has to be the Jaguar XK120...As you can see from the picture in the link. What gorgeous lines!

    http://www.cf-server.de/Content-Express/index.cfm?domain=www.auto-schrauber.de&fuseaction=galerie&galerieaction=detail&id=3463&rubrik=165

Just imagine post war England...very depressed...then a car this beautiful and fast (Fastest Production Car in the world, 120+ MPH) including a brand new type of engine too (First mass produced DOHC Engine 3442cc) arrives at a price that was affordable...It just blew away the competition.

    Jaguar at their very best!

I think this is fairly nice and different. Bubbly roof but it suits it.
Came across it while playing Grand Tourismo 4...
    Lots of engine types though!

For me, it is also the Ferrari 250 Lusso.

    Just beautiful.

Never can understand why people keep picking the 250 GTO. It has a shortened wheelbase, is stumpy looking, the lines do not flow, so how can it be beautiful?

People mixing up the adrenaline of race credibility with the visual caress of a genuinely balanced shape maybe? Don't know. But race cars, with a few notable exceptions like Bizzarinis, tend to be functional looking rather than beautiful.

They are extremely rare. They also sell for funny money.

I think a lot of cars from the early to mid sixties had this wonderful "look" to them. Almost as if all the car designers at that time had taken a course in sculpture, then applied the theory to the moving shape.

Computer aided design these days makes them all look the same, and in particular, would not allow for the extravagance of the flowing shapes that the 250 Lusso and the Bizzarini race cars enjoy. This is because this dart-like profile does not allow for the interior space the marketing people and the buyers want these days.

Picture one of these things standing beside the current model BMW 645 coupe, and you will see what I mean. We can forget about flowing shapes these days. They can do chunky, or they can do chunky with a stripe.

Flowing shape? Nah!! No room for golf clubs. ;):D

By the way 2manyturbos, you can slate the GTO, but don't condemn it for the wrong reasons because what you may not know is that both the Lusso and the GTO are built on exactly the same chassis and are both on a 'shortened chassis'! The Lusso was the Road going version of the 250 GT SWB (short wheel base), with a sleeker body and more luxurious interior. The GTO was developped to replace the rather aerodynamically limited 250 GT SWB racer. They used the same chassis as the 250GT SWB (and therefore also the same chassis as the Lusso!!!), and none other than Giotto Bizzarini (!) designed the body of the GTO !! So when you claim the GTO doesn't have the appeal, and the Bizzarini's do, then you probably didn't realise that Bizzarini designed the GTO :)

But, I have to agree, I don't think the GTO is the most beautiful Ferrari. For me personally it's the 500 superfast, followed by the 330/365 GTC.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29 2manyturbos

    Thanks for the info Paul.

I was aware that the 250 GTO was on the SWB chassis, but not that the 250 Lusso was on the same chassis.

As a long-time classic car fan, I'm aware that one man's meat is another man's poison. So generally I avoid berating other peoples' choices. It is just that in the case of the 250 Lusso and the GTO, them being brother and sister and all, it is really really difficult to understand how anyone who had ever seen a Lusso, could pick a GTO over it as a favourite.
[But loads of people do, it is a valid choice, a real supercar before the mid-engined ones took over the universe.]

As favourites go, I have quite a few, not all of them as elegant as a Ferrari Lusso. A particular favourite is the recent Alfa Romeo SZ {Zagato} coupe. The styling is unique, causes some to throw up. Well, their arms, anyway. But I like it, and you could not call it elegant.

So yeah, sorry for knocking the GTO, I'm sure it's mother loves it. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Its certyainly hard to beat the Italian styling of that era !

The GTO is fabulous its form dictated by what was good for racing, whereas the Lusso can put form over function and I agree its a tastier car as far as the eye is concerned , and having seen one in the flesh at Citywest its stunning !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29 2manyturbos

I'm glad you agree with me MercMad. Thought I was out on my own for a minute.

Favourite classic does not necessarily mean the prettiest, or the most elegant, or the most technically advanced, or the most avant design of its time, or the best rally/race car of its day.

It can mean any or none of these. Many people's favourite classic can refer back to a car Dad had during their youth, or an uncle or aunt, or something less mundane driven by a local bigwig. For the most part though, most people do prefer sports or sporting cars as a classic choice.

And it is hard to beat the Italian designers from the sixties. ;)

Don't get me wrong 2manyturbos, I'm completely with you on that you prefer the Lusso over the GTO, because I also think it's a prettier car. I just felt you were using the wrong arguments, that's all... :)

Perhaps the main reason why people would see the GTO as a more collectable car would be because of it's racing pedigree (in the days that you could drive your car to a race, compete with it, and then drive it back again!!!!) and because they've only made a few: there were 350 Lusso's built, as opposed to just 39 GTO's

In fact the GTO was the last in the line of Ferrari's purpose built "Track" cars, that were suitable for road use, but they didn't quite pull it off, because to have the GTO genuinely qualified for Circuit racing, they had to build 100 cars to homologate (Hence the "O" in the GTO name) it, but they only got as far as 39, so the GTO wasn't allowed to compete in most races.

God, there are just too many, but I have a big soft spot for American cars. I love Mustangs and Dodge Chargers but I would die for a Chevy Bel Air. (I saw a Turquoise one in mint condition parked in a driveway in Walkinstown last month and nearly cried). I'm also very partial to Corvette Stingrays, particularly the 1972-75 makes. I saw a white one up by Christchurch on Friday evening and it was really something else. Also love E-type jags, late 60's Pontiac Firebirds... I could go on for ages really.
