Which ones have you got? (Yes this is a normal topic). Do you think they are worth it? I've got fake ones like most people. I've got two "Livestrong" ones and a black and a white one (they're attached) that say "Speak Up, Stand Up" on them.

I have one with "Cliché" on it.

i know they seem to be the current fashion trend but the real reason for them is for charity and with the fake ones, the money is going straight into the pockets of nasty traders. There are plenty of websites out there that still have the authentic bands, like the Livestrong ones. Buying the fake bands is a disgrace, thats not the point of the bands. Its about the charities!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭penguinbloke

Just making sure but, don't fake bands defeat the whole purpose of the things?

How much do the fake ones cost? The real ones are only a dollar each, who's too cheap to pay a dollar? Its not like there's a backlog, like there used to be.

The self obsessed "me" generation not only wants to give a few measly €£$ to charity, but they want everyone to know they've given to charity by sporting a piece of rubberised plastic. Or even worse they want to give some blag artist the money instead and still look as if they're charitable...

I couldn't help but notice that none of those bracelets were in any way endorsed by anybody. You would be better off writing something on your arm and donating to some random charity.Or even just giving the equivalent money to some homeless guy.

Well the livestrong ones give money to cancer research.
The stop bullying ones and anti racism ones are pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

i have the lance armstrong band too...and also a marie keating band. Saw the fake "charity" bands in a toyshop the other day and despaired.

If you are going to buy them, at least buy the ones that benefit the ****ing charities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

i'm surprised someone hasn't made one that has every colour and has imprinted "i'm following a fad."

i'd buy one of them lol.

some of my mates wear them and one of them bought a livestrong one of a guy in his class. i had a look at the wrapper that it came in and it said "$1". HE PAID 5 EUROS.
he just said they look cool and everyone is wearing one.

it actually says their motto. latin mabobby.

I over heard some kids saying "a Livestrong band is worth 10 multicoloured ones" They are ****ing pokemon cards! they also said "i will give you these two for that one". It really is sickening!

    I'm raging,
Saw the thread title and was expecting to see a celebration of Band Aid or maybe even McFly.
Instead I see a load of crap about people wearing a multitude of wristbands, convincing themselves that their new fashion statement absolves them of any further responsibility to the worlds needy.
In fact, the number of colours is such that it is virtually impossible to keep track. New colours include light blue (prostate cancer), dark blue (child abuse, colon cancer), white (right to life, Alzheimer’s), dark green (ecology, leukaemia, organ donor) and pink (breast cancer).
Good gestures are one thing, but not when they turn into gesturism.
    Now Everybody Sing

It's all about you (it's all about you)
    It's all about you baby
It's all about you (it's all about you)
    It's all about you

    Verse 1:
Yesterday you asked me something I thought you knew
So I told you with a smile, it's all about you
Then you whispered in my ear and you told me too
Said you make my life worthwhile, it's all about you

    Chorus:
And I would answer all your wishes
    If you ask me to
But if you deny me one of your kisses
    Don't know what I'd do
So hold me close and say three words like you used to do
Dancing on the kitchen tiles, it's all about you, yeah!

    (Guitar solo)

    Chorus 2:
And I would answer all your wishes
    If you ask me to
But if you deny me one of your kisses
    Don't know what I'd do
So hold me close and say three words like you used to do
    Dancing on the kitchen tiles
Yes you make my life worthwhile
So I told you with a smile
    It's all about (you)
It's all about you (it's all about you)
    It's all about you baby
    (repeat until end)

i believe they are both bad choices of charitys to donate to, they both get soooo much money annually already - rich people get cancer too so it gets lots of cash, it dont need any more money, give your donations to a cause that really needs it, even if you dont get a stupid looking coloured rubber band in return. whatever happened to charity for charitys sake?

Or even just giving the equivalent money to some homeless guy.
Thats the worst thing you could do. Homeless people on the streets use it to buy drugs and booze. If you want to help, give to the Simon Community, who house and help the homeless get off the streets. If they say they need it to get into a hostel, its a lie. Hostels don't cost 40 quid a night, they spend it on booze. Esp cos its the summer, they're more than likely going to spend it on booze, and sleep outside.

Give to the Simon Community, or another homeless agancy, but not to the homeless people.

...and people still continue top die from it. Rich people gave money to the crisis in Sudan, so does that mean they have enough? No, it means that they got some money, but they still need more.

Anyone know where i can get custom made ones?

Bit of a 'flavour of the month' thing but a good way to raise money for charity

anyone who buys ones not linked to charities should be excommunicated from society

I had an argument with the local toyshop owner on Saturday when I was buying my nephew a present, because he was selling fake charity armbands.

Personally, I wear a livestrong armband sometimes. I wear it because I had a scare with testicular cancer a few months back so wearing it makes me realise how lucky I was/am (I also set up a standing order for the irish cancer society as they were a great help to me).

What bugs me nearly as much as the fake armbands are people selling the genuine ones on eBay for profit. I've seen one guy who regularly sells the Livestrong bands for nearly 5 sterling when he buys them for $1 straight from the Lance Armstrong website !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Livestrong must have made millions and millions off this, which is great, the more money they get, the less people will have to die of cancer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,414 ✭✭✭LoneGunM@n

I bought the Make Poverty History armbands direct from their website ... I bought a batch of 10 [which is the smallest order you can make], so I gave the spares to people I know as a form of donation on their behalf!!

I was in Fairyhouse Market on Sunday last & coudn't believe that there are people selling & even worse buying the fake ones as they are now considered a fashion statement ...

/edit for shocking spelling mistakes :D
