Are you judging this by your download speeds or by an online speed test.

With an online speed test is get QOS 31%

however I download at 119kb/sec and upload at 114kb/sec on a 1mb up / down line from IBB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,523 ✭✭✭optiplexgx270

no im testing via ftp://ftp.irishbroadband.ie/ the 1Mb iso takes 50sec - 60sec to download and DUMeter reports a dl speed of between 24k-34k

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 3,935 Mod ✭✭✭✭Turner

    Ah takes me 12 seconds.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 3,935 Mod ✭✭✭✭Turner

    Im getting 85kb/sec - 119kb/sec on the 10mb file

Id say the connection is unstable.

    Download something from ftp.heanet.ie

pinging boards and that was a good one... download rate is 14 kb/sec steady :( Man angry phone call first thing. This is the worst its ever been.

Weekends seem to be the only time i'm not QoS'ed. All day today and yesterday i've been able to max out any time i wanted. Pings still less than 10ms to boards.ie

    I'm on the tallaght tower.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 magicPockets

...usually it's the same for me too, QoS'd during the working day but evenings and weekends running at full speed....don't understand why this weekend has been fixed at 512k...have to wait to Monday to find out I guess....

    mp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

It burts to 120 when I start the download but quickly settles at 60Kb/sec...

I cannot see how I would be limited as **** all has been downloaded on this connection since it was installed.. Its a shambles really..

I am pretty certain it is the QOS as the ping results below are perfect..

    C:\Documents and Settings\>ping www.boards.ie
Pinging www.boards.ie [82.195.144.58] with 32 bytes of data:

The bandwidth is definetly being limited.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

The sign you've been limited is that when you max out your connection your pings to to 2000-3000ms. Like this :

    Ping statistics for 82.195.144.58:
    Packets: Sent = 21, Received = 21, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 1868ms, Maximum = 2559ms, Average = 2090ms
    Control-Break

Time to ring tech support again me thinks.

I'm on the old 2mb lite and have been QOS'd to 128kbps speeds and lower since last Friday morning, disgrace.

I think IBB have successfully shot themselves in the foot. Their network was having problems, so instead of fixing them up, and thus maybe stealing customers, they have dont it the other way , and effectively downgraded their service for a large portion of the customer base.

I myself think that this level of throttling is a disgrace to the irish market, some is ok, during actual peak times an whatever, but not day-long / week-long throttlling to 12% capacity lol.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Blaster99

It sounds like some users are definitely being throttled, but I'm not so sure all the problems in this thread are down to that. Don't assume anything.

I would incidently have thought that IBB should communicate to customers that they're about to be throttled and offer alternatives. That's what any other ISP would do.

Would The Wise man or OldTitan please post some explanation as to what's happening. As I posted previously i've been waiting for their service with ages but am starting to get cold feet about signing up with them given the last week of posts about their service :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭blobert

I'm only getting speeds of 10k a second today and I'm on a 1mb connection with 8-1 Contention. This is the second time this has happened, I rang up about a week ago and they fixed it while I was on the phone.

Why is there no mention of this on their website, or no emails sent out explaining what they are doing?

If I had any other broadband options I would switch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

i got those crazy bad pings on saturday, like 1000 -> 2000 and the up and download rate went to 10 kb (its a 2Meg line)
atm its about 50 each way.
definate slowdown in performance over the past few days.

are we being punished for the amount of BW we use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Skud

i dont use much bandwith getting 10 - 15 kbps

Tech support said take down ur firewall which i did and was getting worse pings so i quickly put it back up. Pathetic service today, tech support when I did get through didnt help. Cork office didnt help although an engineer is supposed to ring me back. There is a serious serious problem. Even the routers on a tracert give good ms execpt some spiking and I still get the low download rate and spikey ms when playing games. I got exams to worryabout not this. FFS. Would someone from IBB sort themselves out.

powerhousedan your tip didnt work, although if the engineer rings me I'll make sure he does something.

  The service is just not reliable enough!

there is no notification of any download/slow periods...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 magicPockets

....so I shoot of a quick email to the customer support group ranting and raving at the poor service bla bla bla...I come back to find an email waiting from IBB...surely they haven't actually responsed to me already(!)...I open it to find that it's the monthly invoice...doh!

So at least the invoicing system is working then....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 magicPockets

well, I spoke to a technician about an hour or so ago, he took some samples of me downloading between 20 and 30kbytes/sec and advised that he needed to escalate the problem. I asked him if there is any issue with the IBB network, he replied "no the network is just fine"....err....yeah right....

    ...waiting for a call back....still waiting.... :(

my dl speed has now gone down to 37 - 38 kb/sec not 4 hours after it was sorta improved. I might have been qos'd because i was downloading heavily but still i think i was being qos'd already. This really is annoying spent most of day trying to fix it. Still not. theres a prob with the network. My pings are spiky but playable games wise even pinging is grand except one or two fluctuations. Someone got old titans email? I want to send him a mail.

    QoS at its best....

    Anyone recommend getting this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Skud

how could we atm? Usually it is fine for me. I think with a lot of things its poor atm, mainly the 2 meg updgrade. Depends what you are looking for, if it is downloads then yes. If gaming I wouldnt recommend wireless for it. More ppl would be able to give better feedback.
