right i know that its probably been done before but fcuk it. Northside attitudes vs Southside attitudes. are northsiders scumbags/southsiders stuck up their own arses? personally i'm from the northside and have never even thought a certain way about someone because of where they live but i was called a northside scumbag by a person i dont even know today when i was asked where i live. now to be fair(and to not sound like a tit) ive no strong accent either way knacker or posh, i dont look down my nose at anyone, am not a scummy, am well educated and pretty much hold no malice towards any man so whats up with this attitude people have when they hear you're from the Northside/Southside?

I'm a northsider myself and a year ago i was totally open minded and didn't have an attitude that southsiders were total pr*cks. However when I started at UCD the heart of D4 Last September this all changed. There are 2 types of people in South Dublin. D4 people and the rest. The D4 people are the ones with the problems. IMO most of them are completely stuck up their own holes and are extremely arrogant. They are a different breed of people to northsiders. People from areas like Terenure, Walkinstown etc. seem more down to earth than D4s but again I do sense a different vibe off them as people. We definitely live in a divided city. I'm not saying all northsiders are great but I feel the my fellow people from the northside of the liffey have more soul to them as people.

If the only skangers in Dublin lived on the northside, I'd have moved to the southside a long time ago.
But no, there's no escape from skangers where ever you go in Dublin.
Every nice area in Dublin borders on a really dodgy area.
but i was called a northside scumbag by a person i dont even know today when i was asked where i live
Isn't it funny that they had to ask where you were from?
Northsider cliches being what they are, surely this person could have told you were a northsider by the your frightfully unsophisticated demeanor?

Concur wit everthing Zane said... Well, most of it!

I'm a Londoner really (at heart - I've lived in Dublin for more than 10 years, but I still hav the accent), so I've never been able to really put myself in either bracket. Technically I was a southsider until 2003, I lived in Lucan, right beside the river. Since 2003 I'm technically a northsider, livin in the city centre, right beside the river again!

I just wanna say that "D4 heads" just refers to a certain mindset of a small group of southsiders - arrogant, self-absorbed, self-important, slave to brand names and money generally, seemingly without any capacity for abstract thought. Please note 2 things:
    1. You don't have to be from D4 to have this mindset and thus be described as a "D4 head", (I know, it's just a label really...) and
    2. Just because you happen to be from D4 doesn't neccessarily make you one of these ppl. (Although I went out wit a girl a few months back who was from Clonskeagh and yep - She was the archetypal D4 head!!!! F**kin headwrecker  )

Oh, and people from the Northside, IMO, tend to be more genuine and honest. Even if they can seem brash or rude sometimes. But this is just a generalisation based on my experiences with relatively few of them in fairness..

there are only people who get annoyed such things, and people who realise that it doesnt matter where you are from or what youre background is.

catagorising people in to regions just becomes a pointless excersize in futility, becuase everyone is different.

People become the people they are based on their surroundings, the people they socialise with, the way they are brought up, etc. and what is "expected" from them by their friends, for example your in the X crowd and they wear X brand and your not "in" unless you do too. So essentially D4 heads are sheep, follow the flock. But then so are a lot of scumbags, all wear the same tracksuits, shoes, gotta wear the right gear bud, etc.

Then there are the individuals. Those nice people that don't feel they have to conform, that they can be themselves and are secure enough to know they will be liked without having to wear X and so on...

I currently reside in Skerries, I lived in Fairview for 7 years of my life, I've spent a lot of time in the southside on day to day basis over the last couple of years, and also did a spell in Cavan, and this is my conclusion. People are people, some nice, some not so. If you meet someone you don't like, dislike them for who they are, not what they wear.

Having said that, often you don't need to meet people, you can have abuse/rocks hurled at you because there are lesser beings out there who WILL judge you on what you wear, how you speak and where you live.

    My sentiment?

    Rise above.

I agree with the above statements. Especially the bit I've highlighted in bold, that's how I always try to be - Why dya think I went out wit the one from Clonskeagh? I thought I'd wait til I'd got to know her before I judged her. And I did. And she really was that shallow. But I digress...

Another point should be made is that just cos the "individuals" are confident enuff in themselves to not conform, doesn't neccessarily mean they're gonna be any less of a tw*t or sound man then a scumbag, D4 head or Londoner :)

She was really on my case. I reckoned I'd have been a fool to say "oh, sorry love, I can't go out wit ya cos I haven't got to know you properly yet".

In retrospect, of course, that's exactly what I should've done.

Everything that has been said before rings true but another fact i noticed is that when it comes down to it, Northsiders are more prepared to make fun of themselves as the typical scumbags whereas make a joke about a southsider and god help you, they just seem less likely to take the micheal out of the steriotype that they have. This says alot about the northside imo

True, duly noted. But what is it that you think it says?

Just that they are more prepared to make light of what is supposed to be derogitory(sp?) to them. They just seem to be less stuck-up then their southern counterparts

What about Africans? Romanians? Anyone got any good generalisations about them? How should I regard those people?

I've learned that northsiders are great, and southsiders cannot be as good in most regards, that helps me when I'm in Dublin, but we're culturally diverse now, so what about the others?

As a Northsider I get really pi$$ed off about this from time to time. I'd just like to point out NOW that the rest of the thread will probably generalise north/south siders ie. I am aware there are exceptions.

One thing that particularly gets on my wick is how Southsiders come across as being PROUD of the fact that they get lost once they pass O'Connell Bridge. A 24 yr old girl at work, university graduate (UCD however) did not know how to get to Henry St. She is certainly not the first person like this I have come across.

Another thing that I find extremely irritating is the "ah, aren't you great" attitude I get when people discover that I have an honours degree from a top uni, speak 4 languages and have lived in a few other countries. As in, it must have been so hard to rise above the scum to get that far. Hello???? I live in a really nice part of the Northside, went to a good school etc. We don't all live in clay huts!!!

I know I could have posted some more well thought out and sensible points, but this gets me a bit annoyed.

One thing I will say about most Northsiders (and probably a lot of non D4 head Southsiders) is that as we are growing up, regardless of what area you live in, there is more variety people-wise so we are less sheltered/ignorant. For example, I went to a good school in Dublin 9. In my school there were kids from all sorts of places; town, Clontarf, Ballymun, Glasnevin etc, who all mixed together and didn't just see one way of life (ie. ponies, designer clothes) and look down on anyone who is different. Ignorance is bliss as they say.

Finally, the most annoying of all these people are people from the bloody country. "Oh no, I'm not looking for any apartments on the Northside. Gawd I wouldn't live there!!". Eh why.... exactly? They can't even answer with a good reason!

Right now before I say this lemme just say that I've plenty of friends from different cultures and it's based on when I worked in immigration (dont ask) as well as my current freinds.

Any russians, latvians I've met and hung about with have been cool and very welcoming. Nigerians tend to be a bit more closed about thier life in Nigeria etc and dont really divulge much about themselves if they can help it.

Romanians (lets just say im a believer in the if you cant say anything nice say nothing at all philosophy)

There are idiots everwhere every idiot has a moment of inteligence. Every body also does something idiotic every now and then.

There are bad areas on both sides of this city. THere probably are more on the northside from what I can tell. I am from the northside and that's what I can see.

Where ever you are now you are a result of a combination of things one of which is the area you grow up in. It's the whole nature and nurture discussion.

People who judge you purely based on your area are a bit foolish. If they base it on your apperance may not be so wrong though as it is an indicator to your personality. If they judge you on your accent again a little foolish as it doesn't mean much but base it on their bad language or bad grammer you may have a point.

It might be better to declare what makes somebody a scumbag and what makes people a stuck up whatever.

I was called a snob for once saying I wouldn't live in Ballymun and thinking about it they could be right but it all depends on where you look at it from.

I can't really comment since I live in a cocoon of southside heaven (joking, joking). I don't go to the northside because I've something against it, but simply because I don't have a reason to, everything I need is on the south of the liffey.

I mean alot of us joke about the northside, but most of them know it's only a joke and it's only the stupid and ignorant (dangerous combination) who take anything seriously. If I asked someone where they were from and they said somewhere on the northside, I'd make a joke about it but it'd be nothing more, and if they get annoyed then it's not the sort of person I want to be talking to.

People take this whole northside vs. southside thing way too seriously, lighten up for féck sake!

Where abouts in Killiney are you?

Fair enough, but at the other end of the stick, if someone asks you where you're from and you say Killiney and they make a joke, how are you going to take it? The answer is you dont know. As would my answer be if i was in that situation, because really it all depends on your interpretation of the joke, whether you feel it to be an attack or merely in jest.

I'd laugh either way, at the joke or at the person if he's trying to be serious

I'm in between Super Valu and Ballybrack village. Why, do you live near me?

    I'm in an unusual position.

I live in Artane, but apart from my home, I go no where on the Northside. I just never have any reason to. Most of my friends are on the Southside, near Blackrock and my college is in Crumlin.

I guess I'm a defector and I have at least one friend who's also a defector.

I agree, this whole Northside Southside thing is aload of b*ll*cks. It's simple, there's places in the Northside full of people like the stereotypical D4 heads, ie arrogant, rich, stuck up themselves etc etc and there's some very nice players to live on the Northside too. There's also complete dumps. On the southside there's places full of people like the stereotypical D4 heads, ie arrogant, rich, stuck up themselves etc etc and there's some very nice players to live. There's also complete dumps. You meet all sorts either side of the liffey, there is no division there at all, it's not even a big bleedin' river!

Ah but, in fairness there is more scum on de nortsoyid. If you walk over the liffey (god forbid) there are proportionately more skangbangs

I think anyone here who is saying "lighten up", "it's only a bit of craic" etc is obviously from the Southside.

Funkstard, why do you feel the need to make a joke every time you meet someone from the Northside? Frankly I think that's pathetic. There's a difference between joking with your friends because they are from the country or something, and insulting (which is effectively what you are doing) are complete stranger because of where they're from.

Also, it is absolutely not true that there are more "skangbangs" on the Northside. Do you have some sort of proof or evidence of that? Because if you were to find some I'm pretty sure you would find that the opposite is true. Did you know that Dublin 8 had (possibly still has) the highest concentration per head of heroin addicts in Europe? Oh, and isn't that on the Southside?

I suggest you grow up and take a look around.

Sorry now, but when did I say I 'insult' EVERY northsider I meet?

I say it as a JOKE. Ever hear of one of these? They're not supposed to be taken seriously and are a good indicator of a persons sense of humour judging by their reaction (your reaction speaks for itself). I love saying it to people like you, because you get so defensive and worked up over something so blatantly inconsequential and stupid as what side of the river you happen to live on.

You seem to have some inferiority complex about coming from the northside, or people who offend northsiders. It's a ****ing joke, and the sooner you learn that and not get so offended and try to refute a mindless slag with a proper argument the better, because it makes you seem a little too desperate to defend yourself.

I'm from the northside originally (marino). Marino is a pretty nice area not a stranger to hassel but i wouldnt call it rough.

Since leaving Marino I have lived in the worse area's of Dublin inner city. St Teresa's Gardens, Dolphin's Barn and now inchicore. All of these area's are south of the liffey and are 100x worse than marino was. I was expelled from my school in marino and had to spend 3 grand on 6th year in Bruce college.

Bruce college is a private cram school for the children of VERY wealthy people. I had to take a loan as parents attitude were "you got kicked out you are paying for private school". My interaction there with people from very wealthy backgrounds makes me laugh to this day.

I dont partically like or dislike them too much. In some ways I kinda feel sorry for them becuase they are so intimitdated by things in this city. They also largely dont seem to have any concept of the value for money and how some people mightnt be in their same situation. These are all failings and a sign of ignorance.

Bottom line is that there are bad area's and good area's evenly divided up the greater Dublin area. However southside has its reputation becuase of the presence of a very large amount of money around the D4 area (similarly this level of wealth can be seen in further norside area's such as sutton and more so Howth.) D4 is the "spirtual home" of big money in Dublin and thus these sterotypes exsist.

When with people who seem to have a attitude and are proud to be from a wealthy southside area I play up my northside role a little but for fun and usually get a reaction.

I was dumped by a girl in bruce college after she stayed the weekend in my flat in Doplhin's Barn. The saturday night we were disturbed by the car in the driveway next door being burnt out and sadly she saw the open dealing going on across the road when going to the spar. Needless to say a born a bred donnybrook girl didnt hang around :)

People have different views on the world thats just life I guess *shrug*

yea its not really that funny example= at a schools function once sum blackrock heads startes talking to us, when they realised we we're from Swords they shook their heads and walked off! Amusing story, yet quiet offensive!

It can be funny, but alot of people (southsiders) actaully do take it seriously!

yea its not really that funny example= at a schools function once sum blackrock heads startes talking to us, when they realised we we're from Swords they shook their heads and walked off! Amusing story, yet quiet offensive!

It can be funny, but alot of people (southsiders) actaully do take it seriously!

Haha, that happened a friend of mine too. He was talking to some girl in a club, and when he told him what school he was in she walked away :D

Well, It might be a joke for you, but it just stops being funny
after a while beacause people like you are banging it out constantly
    Because they think its hi-larious.
    Which it isn't.

Once again I reiterate, I don't go around 'banging it out constantly' When I do say it it's funny, I know the stage when it gets annoying and I don't go there

Well, put it this way, if you were in a situation in which you
Constantly either had to make a joke of were you lived, and laugh it off
Or get pissed off, I can guarantee that you wouldn't be laughing for too long.
It's not even the thing that's said, very occasionally it can actually be funny, but just the attitude behind it is infuriating

What attitude? It's a J-O-K-E. If it's annoying you then tell the person to shut the **** up. You've gotten the perception of how I make fun of northsiders all wrong. I don't constantly chide them about it, I'll just make a witty comment when they mention it. And I only say it to people I can judge will laugh about it

Anyway, it's tasteless to annoy someone for fun. A sign of bad character

    Ah féck off

I'm a northsider who likes rugby,i'm not a hugger. ya can't stereotype northside/southside because for every ballymun there's a sallynoggin and for every dun laoghire there's a clontarf.
