Unfortunately, you have to pick from a list of X amount of names. Hence the John Paul II part, or Benedict XVI.

I'm pretty sure many of those names won't be on the list. ;)

Surley as pope you could change any rule in this regard. As one becomes pope before taking the name one could amend any rule.

Who are you, the Queen? *One* could probably change the rule, but I don't think Pope Onarope would go down too well.

Is the queen the only one allowed to speak correctly? (But I think the Queen would be consistent)

John II started the tradition - his birth name was Mercurius, which also being the name of the Roman god of trade and commerce (and presumably email given that Mercurius/Mercury is the Roman equivalent of Hermes) might have been inappropriate for a pope. A few have ruled under their birth names since though (one of the Marcelluses did IIRC).

I'm unaware of any rule that says you have to pick a name that someone's used before (and tbh it doesn't make sense to me as a rule rather than as a common tradition that could be broken at a whim) so some link to a reference to that might be interesting.

Oh, tempted as I am to go for Pope Selwyn Froggit (or Pope Hilarious II - there's been a Hilarius before), I'd go for Pope Peter The Roman as it might bother a few people.
