Guy with microphone who tells jokes top of Grafton St and at the square in Temple Bar

    Hi,

Maybe you've seen this guy -

He stands either at the top of Grafton Street (St. Stephen's Green end) or at the square in Temple Bar (outside The Quays pub.) There is always a large crowd around him.

    1. He is not funny whatsoever. Saying random stupid things like "I bet you like ice cream... idiot" is not funny.

    2. He looks so smug. He has the face of someone instantly hateable.

    3. Why do people laugh at him and give him money? Is it because there is a crowd and they feel they need to do this? It's puzzles me beyond belief.

I really hope this guy doesn't think he is a great entertainer. I am trying to convince myself that he KNOWS he is ****, and that is the beauty of it, it's like an art project, seeing how easy it is to make people laugh and control. I really hope when he is finished his show he thinks to himself, "Unbelievable, no matter what **** I say people give me money and laugh. What idiots humans are!"

But sadly, I don't think this is the case.

Can you relate to what I'm saying?

I don't know what his name is, but he has a microphone (the type that connects to your ear) and a guitar.

If he makes a good living out of saying non-funny things, then I'm seriously in the wrong job.

dave mcsavage is one of the best streeet performers in dublin.
better than a gimp with a guitar anyday.

hes been on tv a few times and has always been excellent.

how is he not a great entertainer if a big crowd of people always enjoy his show and one person doesnt, isnt that the the opposite of "not being a great entertainer"

The only 'comedian' ive heard doing the likes of that is Dave McSavage. He used to be fairly funny on the 98fm chat show.

I presume you mean Dave McSavage - I think he's brilliant and his stand-up show is a hoot too. In fact this is the first time I've heard people complaining about him, and especially the first time I've heard anyone say he's not funny.

Yeah that has to be him. He is extremely funny sometimes if you stay and look at the whole show. He even does vicar st sometimes.

I don't really think he's that good. But he does have an ability to come up with some brilliant slags/insults/jokes on the spot.

Wow... OK. I guess I just don't like humour based around insulting people...

I do admire his balls for standing there doing his show however.

Now, i may be wrong (although it would be a first) but i'd say poor dublindude was savaged by the McSavage, and resents it a but.

It's hard to laugh when you're the butt of the joke, but there's no denying David McSavage is a funny guy, well able to improvise.

Sorry if he got you, he ripped it out of me once for about 5mins straight...Ouch.

I actually really like Tom Green. The difference between Mr Green and Mr Microphone man is one seems to be innocent and crazy while the other seems to be genuinely angry and negative.

You are incorrect. He has never directed a comment towards me or said anything which I have taken personally.

Apparently there are medical reasons for his frequent skitzo outbreaks and negative attitude. He's been in a mental ward or some crap. So the rumours go.

He is about as funny as cancer, is amateur at best when it comes to being on stage, his "popularity" (I still hold out hope this is an illusion) is indicative of the state of irish society.
When the world (in this case Ireland) laughs at this clown, you have to shed a tear for where we are as a nation.

This man needs to be run out of town.

He's funny the first few times, but after that you realise that

    A. His material is just repeated over and over and over.
    B. He can just be randomly abusive

Some of the improvised stuff he does based around the things that happen is great though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭Kingsize

i agree he is unoriginal & his spontaneous "improvs" are nothing more than rehearsed put downs .hes a tosser to boot plus he's ryan tubridy's cousin.
    what an C*CK

I think hes great. I have a friend who will go out of his way so not to walk past him for fear of getting a slagging..

He used to be the warm up act of the late late show for the audience before the live show. He was even funnier after you had swallowed all the free wine they supplied.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭Kingsize

"i know what you mean but he has the balls to slag any scumbag"
    shouldve mentioned this but
I heard a rumour that he slagged a girl off in the hapenny bridge inn at a comedy night, the girl became rather emotional & left only to return with her boyfriend who was in a fighting mood & carrying a baseball bat.
appaently the "fearless" comedian was cowering behind the bar while the staff tried to convince the boyfriend to "leave it"

ho ho ! probably the only time i'll ever laugh at him anyway.

i understand people have their own preferences as to whats entertainment,
i just dont get this guy & just cos it makes a crowd of people laugh does not make it great comedy (or even comedy for that matter)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 932 ✭✭✭yossarin

I've seem him doing standup and on the street a few times.
I don't like him at all.

Not funny in either case - its only the laziest standups that just insult the audience. He can't think of anything original to do so he just browbeats people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

    what a spa!!

afraid of a nut with a baseball bat LOL!!!!111!

He has a few good moments the first time you see him, but all his shows are exactly the same. He even uses the same slaggings at most of his shows.

I think he works in Roddy Bolands in Rathmines as a barman to keep himself in money.

    Enough. I hate him already.

Come to think of it, I think it was him I passed by at the top of Grafton St with a big crowd around him a few months back. Strangely enough, I was eating an ice cream at the time (it all makes sense now) and I think he made some comment about "ice cream" and a few of people started laughing but, me being in a hurry and not listening to him, never turned around or broke stride to acknowledge his dumb jibe. He was probably gutted he didn't get a reaction, as w@nkers such as he normally are.

I would never have remembered that only for this thread...mad.

Ive seen the guy with the guitar once, strange hair too.. he got a few laughs from the tourists gathered around him and by picking on other people passing by. Wasnt hugely funny, but some of his material wasnt terrible.

    Never seen McSavage before though.

"But it does mean its funny."

I disagree i think people laugh as a gut reaction most are happy that it aint them being the butt of the joke.
if an onion makes you cry is it tragedy?

also i could be wrong but i dont think it's him working in roddy bolands for extra cash,he's the son of a wealthy ex minister & not short of a bob or two as far as i know.

A big crowd of people would also gather around a car crash or someone having an epileptic fit.

Dave McSavage is about as funny as a baby with cancer.

Alledgedly, his two recent appearances on the Late Late were only because the headlining guests pulled out at the last minute.

I'd love to arrange one of those spontaneous web events (what are they called again?) where 10 total strangers agree to meet up at one of his street 'perfomances' and drop sink bombs at an agreed time, or start a very low droning noise.

I'm just glad mainstream comedy success in Ireland continues to elude him.

I think alot of the people who matter have picked up on his lack of talent, and the doors to irish fame are going to remain firmly shut.

I've gotta say I enjoy him. I've only seen him a few times, but I've enjoyed it any time I've seen him.
He's street entertainment. I don't expect him to be the greatest comedian around, but for a few minutes free entertainment he's grand!

Slagging people off is the lowest form of comedy, i hate it. It's easy to make that funny. I really hope someone loses it some day and does something bad to him.
FYI he has never done anything to me.

    A. True, but at least proper comedians will rephrase their material. Not MacSAvage, it's just the same old stuff over and over again

    B. Without being reminiscint of a slagging match between two Class A scumbags?

it took you a "few times" to realise that something bored you, not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I've been to see some top comedians more than once and their routines are always repititious.

If you read "Love all the people", a book on Bill Hicks "the comedians comedian" there is numerous transcripts of his routines, and there is negligible difference between each.
