Hi, I say a article in yesterdays papers about La Fitness in Darty. I had been looking to start going to the Gym. As there doesn't happen to be a review a above I was hoping someone could tell me if its really worth joining

Well I looked in their once. The weights section was tiny from what I saw. But that was maybe 2 years ago

I went to have a tour of the place a few months ago. Costs best part of €1200 a year. Joined Carlysle in KCR instead for €425 which has much better facilities. Even if they have one of their 2 for 1 deals in LA fitness its still not great value. Go have a look for yourself though as you may prefer it. It's much smaller/quieter than most other gyms.

Yeah, I was considering joining LA but it's pretty damn expensive. Is there any reasonably cheap gyms near the ranelagh area?

Hey I had a mate who worled there for a while who said he wouldn't set foot in the place unless they paid him... uh... which they did, so he did. Apparently not too bad but like many big box gyms, quite sales oriented and perhaps not the best in terms of customer service.

    Expensive too of course.

I train there at the moment as it's just around the corner from my house. If you're into weights, then it's not the gym for you. The weights section is small and not very well equipped. (They have one Olympic bar tucked in a corner somewhere, but no squat rack/cage). My partner and I have a membership for €75 a month - we chose it based purely on convenience.

At the moment, I'm doing some squats, but I'm limited to 20kg due to the lack of a cage/rack.

The machine selection is reasonable but could be better. In fact I think that the whole floor space could be redesigned for better use.

They offer plenty of classes if you're into such things. I sometimes go to the "Abs and Back" class and it's pretty good. There's also a pool etc.

It's not bad as long as you're not real serious into heavy weights. There's no squat rack and the dumbells only go up to 32Kg. As usual there's a huge area devoted to machines that nobody uses and a small area for weights that is jammed from 5.00-8.00pm.

I found the trainers there quite good and the place is kept well. There's also a 15m pool and sauna.

    Cost €499 special - I think it's still available.

Summary - ok for the price!

Thanks! I don't need serious weights so I'm ok, it's five minutes walk from my house so for convenience really. Joined last night, no joining fee and €49.50 a month.
