I'm sure you are all throwing your eyes up to heaven saying "not another one". Sorry in advance

We will be building a new house towards the end of this year, beginning of 2006. We are really keen on making this house as environmentally friendly as possible and obviously one of the first areas we are looking at is the heating system.

Is a geo-thermal system as effective as an oil or gas system? With a very young family this question is important to us.

Also can someone explain what a U factor is in energy efficiency? The timber frame house we are looking at has a U Factor of 0.15 - is this good? I have searched for an explanation of U factor but without joy.
