Egads, how much of that is used and how much is there for, em, you know, phallic re-inforcement? :)

I had the pleasure of putting a whole studio together the other nite and man wiring up the racks and patchbay was a task!!! But I must say I enjoyed it.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I'd love to wire up a rack some day.

I just cannot see the point in those at all. Phallic-reinforcement as the doc puts it, methinks.

Just curious, what would you put in your rack if you had an unlimited budget, feylya?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Mesa Triaxis, GT Pro/G major/Pod XT pro/some funky effects box, Eventide Harmoniser, Mesa Strategy 400, amp switching, electricy filter/cleaner thing, Wireless kit, strobe tuner THEN a Mark IV, a Road King, a Diezel Herbert, Engl Fireball and a Roland JC120 with a draw with a **** load of midi switchable stomp boxes - whammy, load of Electro Harmonix, vintage pedals, stuff like that.

But that's just a studio rack, to get every sound I think I could want.

    Madness... Absolute madness...

I'd happily live with a triaxis, g major, strategy 400, wireless unit, power conditioner and a strobe tuner though. I showed in another thread that you could get a decent rack set up (preamp, effects and power amp) for less than €1000.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

What exactly is a strobe tuner?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    http://www.petersontuners.com/

    Real accurate tuners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I'd be happy with a decent amp tbh, I'm all about the simple things in life.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I have to concur John2... If you get good head, you're sorted.

I see what you did there!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Yes, I thought I was being a little too subtle, but apparently not.

Anyway, a decent head & 4x12 and you really can't go far wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I'm thinking of going the whole twin reverb route myself

God I love those deizel amps. *dreams...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

    i know i wasn't asked but

i think i'd go for a roland jazz chorus for my cleaner sounds and u couldn't leave out a diezel or an engl so both of em (if only ...hmm) for the distortion channels or maybe a peavey 5150??...you'd have to throw in a doppola or 2 aswell... an mxr rack delay, furman power conditioner, line 6 echo pro, g major electric mistress flanger and a tremulator a switching unit and a wireless.. some nice distortion maybe a rat and a of course a whammy and either a dunlop or vox wah.. tut i'm depressed now

Ha, you're just copying my rack now :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

what can i say u know your shizzle my nizzle...

its close enough i suppose didn't mean that to happen but they jc is really nice (mark knopfler uses it... best clean guitar sound ever) and after looking around for a new amp its perfectly obvious that engl and diezel are **** hot...

the effects i like the g major or maybe a rocktron... delay and flanger have to be on their own rack wise i think.. and i'm an effects freak so i need all that **** (i need it now ha).. u just picked good gear i think didn't mean to copy u :( .. u don't have a doppolas in yours tho so blah :p...

off topic: got the ds-1 working sweet thankin you bud :)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Meh, the amps were the same :p JC120 is a lovely amp. Hetfield uses one.

I threw a new battery in it for ya. Should last a while. Hope you enjoy it :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

ha ha did ya it was flat as a pancake when i got it thought it was fecked but i just stuck a(nother) new battery in and it worked great nice and meaty..cheers again... yeah even the jc120 simulator on the gt-6 is beautiful....

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

It was flat? Weird, I tried it for five minutes with that battery before I threw it in the box and it was grand. Sorry about that :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

its grand its only a battery for **** sake... fair play for tryin anyway ;)...what guitar would be at the end of your rack..only 1 now

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I'm thinking my dream rig will still consist of a Mark IV & Road King 4x12 Cab... No rackmount gear here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

with unlimited money i'm sure you'd find something to fit in to your rig.. like a second amp maybe

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Only one guitar? Either an ESP M-II custom, floyd rose, 2 EMG 81's, vol vol one, three way slotted switch, ebony board, no inlays, maple neck through, alder body, reverse pointed head stock.

    Or

Custom 7 string, RG shape, neck through, maple/bubinga/maple/bubinga/maple neck laminate, alder body wings, custom 4+3 head, ebony board, 26 fret (20-26 fret scalloped), no inlays, fibre optic/led side dots (blue or red), 2 EMG 81-7's, Double Edge Lo Pro (with piezos), vol vol tone and 3 way slotted for the magnetics, volume and three way mini toggle for the piezo's (piezo only, piezo and magnetic, magnetic only), trans violin burst finish.

I don't really see the need, a good Head like the Mark IV, Rectifier, or Road King would have me sorted.

As much as I marvel at rigs like John Petrucci's, I still cannot see the need. 3 Road Kings & 2 Lone Stars?

Well, I suppose he is fairly short. ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Backups incase one of them dies while playing live. Road Kings for distortion, Lone Stars for clean tone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

mine would have to be a strat without a doubt... 22 jumbo maple/ frets alder body painted white with black board.. straight thru maple neck with chrome nuts and floyd rose...s-1 pickup switching on seymour duncan jb's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I know the Road Kings are for distortion, and the Lone Stars for clean, but only the one road king is for backup, everything else is fully in use supposedly. Which I find completely OTT, but then again, he is endorsed by Mesa, and I'm sure if I got whatever gear I could off them, I doubt I'd go with just what I need, I'd probably get a rectifier for Rythm, Mark IV for leads, probably a Lone star for cleans, and 6 Road King 4x12's no matter how silly that would be!

Oh, and I think we'd all know what guitar I'd be using with my rig. ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Think about it. You're running through 2 Lone Stars, playing some clean thing. If one of them goes down, you're still getting sound, only one of your cabs stops working. That way you don't have to stop playing and wait for your head to be replaced. If one of the Road Kings goes down, his guitar tech can flick a switch or move a cable and you're back to playing with 2 heads.

Aye, but Mesa's are built like the Tiger B! But I do see what you mean.

I wonder how many times in his career has an amp gone down on Petrucci?

yeah the chances of a pro setup dyin mid gig is small but possible and backups are essential..evne for us amateurs

I've no idea but when you consider how far the amps have to travel and how much pushing around they get, I'd say the failure rate is high enough. Tubes are delicate enough things!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

Petrucci had the lone stars before they we're even out!!! Oh boy the clean tone on them is lovely and the distortion is two. The whole amp is class.

At the end of the day pertrucci rig isn't really that complex. Most rack set ups aren't they just appear to be complex. It just simple signal flow really.

But to be honest give me 2-3 half stacks along with a Les Paul Custom and I'm happy boy. I likes to feel the power chords ripping :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Ah, Petrucci's rig is complex enough. Watch the videos that I posted a while back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

I've seen that and I've an article in one of the magazines about it. I wouldn't be two scared of it TBH. I'd love a go of it alrite. I've never played a Road King. I'm eager to try one!!!

Me too. Never even play a Mesa :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

Just pop into Musician when your down in dublin.

On one note amp has never let me down. But it did die during a gig one time but it was the ****ty plug board at the venue. Sorted out fairly quickly :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye, must go to Dublin for a gear experience day :p Never like playing stuff in the shops down there though. Although, I did play that ENGL in Instrumental. Lovely stuff :)

Aye, they're fairly sound in there for that kinda thing. That's where I was first introduced to Mesa via the gorgeous Mark IV they had at one stage.

And if fairness Feylya, you owe it to yourself to play a Mesa at some stage.
Hell, you don't even have to go to Dublin to check 'em out, you can try out mine.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hmmm, Dublin or Galway... I think that's fairly clear...

Yeah, I have to spend a good few hours playing random tube amps.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Still, it's an option. We should have an instruments board beers at some stage though!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Instruments board jam!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Beer jam!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I'll let you jam your beer wherever you want, as long as I'm not in the same county...

    Yes, I like beers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Well, that's wandered a bit off topic...

So, a nice 4x12, which would you go for? Personally it would have to be the Road King 4x12 with it's mix of Custom 90 and Vintage30 speakers.
