I was just wondering what people thought about Pilates. They're offering a six week course in my gym for 75 euro.At the moment i do four gym sessions a week so im fairly fit etc i just think it might be interesting to try it out.I was just wondering what was involved and if anyone has tried it what they thought about it.

What gym - as the pilates will mainly depend on the teacher.

Overall though - pilates will focus on your core or transverse abdominals which are the ones that hold your stomach in and help in all weights/day to day movements.

The problem with pilates for most guys who workout regularly is it will tend to be filled with lottttttttsssssss of women (all good i hear you say) HOWEVER for someone who is already in good shape or trains his/her abs/core regularly it might not provide enough of a challenge.

My recommendation - use the swiss ball (and not just doing bloody crunches on it - use it for everything e.g. build up to bench press, shoulder press etc) and take an asthanga or power yoga class instead.

Its the new DCU gym.As its a six week course theyre getting an instructor in.I presume theres noone qualified working there at the moment.

The main thing i was looking at was the spine alignment part of it as i get a bit of lower back pain and have been told in the past that it was because my spine was slightly out of alignment.Do you think the Pilates would help in any way?

With regards to the abs thing i do quite alot already so unless it was reasonably tough id agree with you that it probably wouldnt be much benefit.

In my opinion it would be worth doing, if you can spare the 75euro. I've found it to be beneficial to overall posture and and it is often recommended for helping with spine alignment though i can't comment on effective it would be. The main danger would be, as mentioned by the other poster, that the class will be mostly subscribed to by those looking for a low intensity, almost relaxed session, and the instructor decides to progress very slowly.

Is there a website for the Gym? What time does this class start? I have the same problem with the alignment of my spine - an x-ray showed three different curves! €75 for classes is a lot cheaper than going to the chiro every week...

Im not sure they have a website up and running yet.Its a six week course and its 100 euro for non members. Its a brand new gym(theyre turning the old one into some sort of performance gym) so its pretty nice.If you look up the phone number for DCU im pretty sure they can connect you if you ring.Starts tomorrow by the way.
