I was told countless times in this thread that there would be no diff in gaming and I was 512/128, Now that I am 2048/128 I can now say after extensive tests I def have minimum 20-30 improvement.
In a almost full server playing HL2 with the normally sapping Overwatch map I am getting between 40-45 whereas b4 it would be between 65-85ish.
This thread has not being done b4 I checked search........

    I didnt notice much of a difference,altho i was on a french server for a few seconds(cs 1.6)
noticing a major difference in download speeds tho :DDD

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

Extra upload bandwidth would make little to no difference (with one player) and extra download bandwidth would make absolutely no difference. However interleaving settings would make a huge difference. Maybe they got changed...

Upload would make a difference. You could up the maxpackets in games like Q3 and COD to 125 (whereas now anything above 100 causes ping to go up, the same as on 512)

I have pld all morning and on busy servers between 40-48
    joy oh joy!
    so much smoother too.

No difference whatsoever to me and my ping maybe it's the placebo effect

w000000000t woke up to the 2mg this morning :)

Off to cs now.. I usualy get 30/40 ping to uk servers so I'm not expecting much change.

The download increase will help to be able to increase your max cl_updaterate and cl_rate in source engine games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭kjt

Helps your ping by 10/15, helped my friend by 10 too.
Down to 25 on uk servers mwuahaha.

Those are some nasty pings are you pinging a UK server? ping jolt.co.uk and see what you get if you still get such high numbers then you may want to phone up your ISP and complain.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

well im getting about 3 ms lower when i ping boards but i dont know if that has anything to do with the upgrade

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭K!LL!@N

My pings have been going a bit haywire all day.
Playing CS:S it can go from 60 to 160, but still remain playable.
Download speeds have been amazing though.
Hopefully it's just some teething problems.
I'm with IOL BB+ by the way.

Prime Time now so I'm pinging about 200-250 to most servers in comparison to my normal 40-70. Needless to say I am displeased, hopefully it won't be a regular occurance.

getting an absolutely flat-out ping of 28ms to jolt, using PPPoA with VCMux encapsulation. was getting 35ms using PPPoE 20 minutes ago :-)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

do you know how to change to PPPoA on the router eircom give out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 994 ✭✭✭JNive

if thats the netopia usb/ethernet one i can check a bit later, my girlfriend has that package. but definitely seems like less tcp overhead too, my browser is unaffected by my BT client which is going at 110/6 . Gonna be doing some thorough testing lol.

JNive, post your pings to the following.

    games5.iol.ie

Pinging jolt im getting anywhere from 120ms to 240ms with the odd 80ms thrown in now and again. About 81ms to games5.iol.ie.

Going to try some gaming now, see how that "goes".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

i had a glance at that page Baldy and i dont see why PPPoA would be bad for gaming

whats with all the people posting pings and not saying what isp they are on?
there is more than 1 dsl isp you know, even if they just sell the same wholesale product backhaul is differnt

so im not getting 20 ms to boards.ie and 30 ms to jolt.co.uk on eircom home plus

It's bad for gaming cause the Eircom network only supports PPPoE. PPPoA is available on english networks and is more efficient on the client but this is not available on Irish networks, while the backbone is an ATM network, information is represent in Ethernet format still.

how come PPPoA works for me then and why is my ping lower with my router set to PPPoA?

I'm with these guys, I changed over to PPPoA, ping dropped 10ms and my downloads became more stable. It's zee truth.

I'm sure ur router is setting itself back to PPPoE, probably resorting to a last known good configuration is my best bet. When ISP are you on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,784 ✭✭✭Vikings

With Eircom, plus package. Just tried to play some online games there and had a very unstable ping. Half the time it was 1500+ and half the time it was playable although not normal.

eircom as stated in my previous posts
that does not explain the drop in ping for everyone who has tried it so far

Try a restart on the router if the pings are unstable. Are you on a network of several computers or do you have an unprotected wireless access point? Cause if it's reaching 1500+ I would imagine someone is downloading through ur connection

Ring Eircom and ask them about PPPoA setting tomorrow! It's just a change in network condition congestion on the network, etc. How long did you leave the ping going can I ask ? or what are ping are you using max, average, or min results ?
