Apparently the pope is on his death bed and his last rights ( I have no idea what they are or if indeed that is what they are called, I think it's some sort of sacrament) have been read to him. Anyone know anythnig else on this?

Sad, but not too surprising, tbh.

Not the first time he's been giving his last rites, happened after he was shot in '81 too.

Imagine he'd arose on Easter Sunday

Also i think this is a little more likely than the time when he was shot. Hope he doesnt go in pain anyway, and <insert god of your choice> bless him

Even if the Pope is'nt actually dead, he's no longer running the affairs of the Catholic Church and seems to be reduced to the state of a Soviet President just before they were offcialy deceased.

Good. Its pathetic the way they're keeping him doing this into hospital / out of hospital $hit. Get a new pope!!!!!! The one we have is knackered. Its kinda sad that we have to say that the leader of the catholic church is a near-dead cripple - kinda signifies the catholic church in a way.

I realise that this may offend people but I don't really care if the pope is dying, he is an old man and when people get old they die, its fact of life. And I don't know why he's getting so much news coverage people die everyday and they don't get on the news, there's so much worse disaters going on in the world at the moment than the pope dying. I just hope we get a day off school/work as a day of remembrance, it would be the only thing the pope has ever done for me

 Nobody is denying that there are "worse disaters [sic]" going on, but you really think the death of the (mortal) leader of one of the worlds largest religions isn't newsworthy?

In fairnes the guy has been leader for 30/40 years and your saying when he gets sick they should just fúck off and leave him die? Do you not think if someone really close to you is dying your gonna try and save him? I dont think he would have been doing much of the day to day running of the church for at least the last year so no need to get worried about it. God thats a pretty ignorant view to have, no offence

Last Rites is a common but misleading term; the Anointing of the Sick can be received as often as the believer desires and should not be postponed until death is thought to be near, nor is its administration intended to imply an expectation that the recipient is about to die. At one time in history, the sacrament was reserved until death was believed to be imminent, in order to reduce the possibility of the sick person committing further sins after its administration. However, since the Second Vatican Council this is no longer the case.

Also- the Vatican has announced that there are no plans to transfer him to hospital- read what you will into that.

He may be around quite some time yet, regardless of people's beliefs, the pope is a good man and most people will be sad to see him go when he finally does.

It's funny that with the man dying all we can talk about is getting a day of work!

Because their owners are generally Catholic.

    This is bad news.

I had money on him not popping his clogs till May.

And yes, he was the leader of that religious institution for 40 or so years. Fair play. But he's not fit for it any longer.

I just hope the poor man doesn't suffer much longer. He looked so frail at the Easter Blessing on tv, and very distressed, so if this latest crisis in his health is his last, let's pray that he goes peacefully. He has done so much good during his life, and even if I haven't agreed with everything the Vatican has put out during his time as Pope, he is still St Peter's successor and the leader of my church, and as such deserves respect.

If anyone made comments as ignorant and insulting about a leader of another religion, they would be in very deep trouble and called racists or anti-Jew or anti-Islam.

It will be a good thing for the Church when the uncertainty of who is running the Vatican is over, but until Pope John Paul II is either declared dead or steps down, he remains Christ's representative on earth no matter how ill he is.

Some people are so f**king ignorant.
The man is on his death bed, have a little respect if possible.
its immaterial whether "this is a catholic state", whether you are anti religion because the christian bros made you do more than math. Try, if possible to put aside personal snipes and bring it into your mind that a man who IMO is worthy of respect is on his death bed.

No offence taken on the comments but disappointed that you seem happy in your ignorance. He is quite an important old man, whatever you may think of him. He influences more than the EU, Bush and Putin between them. But he doesn't do tax cuts.

I just hope that perhaps the next pope will bring in a rule that allowes Popes to retire....it's really disgusted me how that poor man has been wheeled out to deliver blessings and travel the world when he's clearly just about to pop his cloggs.

I'm not religious at all but I find the whole thing very sad :-/

Yep agree with you. There is precedent for it and it can be done but the problem of it goes back to the schism of the 14th century when they ended up with two popes for a bit and it led to a few wars. Question is who do people follow if one is retired as the Pope is infallible ?

Only on matters of religious doctern and only when specfically usining papel infalliblity gathering card and it doesn't happen often (last case was the immaclate conception ?) and it's only because of a small minority in a vote in 1890 or somesuch

    CNN wrote:
VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II's condition remained "serious" early Friday, but he appeared to be responding well to antibiotic treatment for a urinary tract infection that caused him to develop a fever, a Vatican official said.

Thursday night, as his health deteriorated, the pontiff was given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church, a Vatican source told CNN.

The sacrament does not necessarily mean that the pope is dying. Last rites -- also known as the sacrament of the sick or extreme unction -- are commonly given to people who are seriously ill as well.

"This morning the condition of the Holy Father is very serious," the statement said, but the 84-year-old pontiff remained "conscious, lucid and tranquil".

The Pope has decided not to return to Rome's Gemelli hospital - but is being treated in his apartment by his private doctor Renato Buzzetti.

The great man seems to be accepting that his death is imminent. He was crying on tv on Sunday as if he knew it was his last time to bless his people. It is very sad.

I'm not a catholic but from what I remember in school, it supposedly God (working through the cardinals) that decides who becomes Pope. As such only God can decide when a pope should leave.
