A Warning For All Females in Dublin - READ THIS

This is an e-mail i recived from a friend today and i hope as many people as possible will copy and paste this and send it to as many people as you can. This is very serious, and is a daily occurance in our streets of Dublin.

It was about 3 weeks ago, I was at the Statoil station on Ushers Quay getting diesel. It was about 11:30pm. I was approached by 2 men and 2 women in a car. The man that was driving asked me 'What kind of perfume do you wear?' I was a bit confused and I asked him 'Why?'
He said 'We are selling some name brand perfumes, at cheap prices.' I said I had no money. He then reached out of the car and handed me paper that was laminated; it had many perfumes on it. I looked quickly at it and gave it back. I said, I have no money.
He said it is OK, we take check, cash or credit cards. Then the people in the car began to laugh. I just got in my car and said no thanks.
Then I received this e-mail yesterday and it sent chills up my spine.
PLEASE READ THIS. It is not joke. Here is the e-mail I was sent :

Dear Friends,
I know not all of you are women that I am sending this to, but am hoping you will share this with your wives, daughters, mother, sisters, etc.
Our world seems to be getting crazier by the day. Pipe bombs in mailboxes and sickos in parking lots with perfume. Be careful.
I was approached yesterday afternoon around 3:30 PM in the Ilac Centre car park, when two males asked what kind of perfume I was wearing.
Then they asked if I'd like to sample some fabulous scent they were willing to sell me at a very reasonable rate. I probably would have agreed had I not received an e-mail some weeks ago warning of a 'Wanna smell this neat perfume' scam.
The men continued to stand between parked cars, I guess to wait for someone else to hit on. I stopped a lady going towards them, pointing at them and told her about how I was sent an e-mail at work about someone walking up to you at the malls or in parking lots and asking you to SNIFF PERFUME that they are selling at a cheap price.

THIS IS NOT PERFUME...IT IS ETHER!

When you sniff it, you'll pass out. They'll take your wallet, your valuables and heaven knows what else. If it were not for this e-mail, I probably would have sniffed the 'perfume' but thanks to the generosity of an e-mailing friend, I was spared whatever might have happened to me.
I wanted to do the same for you.
PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL YOUR WOMEN FRIENDS AND PLEASE BE ALERT AND BE AWARE. IF YOU ARE A MAN AND RECEIVE THIS, PASS IT ON TO YOUR WOMEN FRIENDS.
Ladies this happened to me yesterday and I didn't smell the perfume either, thanks to this email.
This is true. Believe me, I know. I was over by the car park at lunch time when I was approached. So either day or night, it does not matter. There were 3 guys together when I was approached. I called the Gardai when I got back to my home.

Like the email says above, LET EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS. YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, CO-WORKERS, whoever. It helped me. The first thing that popped into my head was this e-mail warning.

So the warning is don't trust strange men in car parks selling cheap perfume at night? Got it.

No seriously, if this is a genuine thing, then thank you for the warning, it is appreciated.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 172 ✭✭[InsertHandle]

If this is genuine then it is very sick, in fact it's a whole new low.

Thing is this kinda **** gets sent round in emails all the time and is not much more than scare mongering and at the very worst just giving sick people new ideas

ALL garages have cctv. u go to the gardai, they look at the video and abrakababra they have a licence plate num

I know one of the girls that this has already happened to, so yes, i can say that this is not some hoax.
The sicko's have not been caught yet.
I just posted the e-mail i recieved so to warn other woman to be on the lookout.

Thank you for the warning! Very creepy indeed!

This line still made me giggle somewhat:
Our world seems to be getting crazier by the day. Pipe bombs in mailboxes and sickos in parking lots with perfume.
Just strange to see the perfume part in the same sentence as pipe-bombs.

But seriously.. thanks for letting us all know! Sick indeed!

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

Well it could be true but to be honest as soon as I read 'got this in an email' and 'forward to everyone you know' I think bull****.

they look at the video and abrakababra they have a licence plate num

Pure bull****, MR2GirlRacer is full of it.

http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/perfume.asp

needless to say, do not propogate this chain mail nonsense, do not send this to anyone.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

Yeah good stuff, never believe anything anything you read in a chain email and I personally HATE anyone who forwards them to me.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 6,718 ✭✭✭SkepticOne

Easiest way is to search for phrases from the email in google:

e.g: "Pipe bombs in mailboxes and sickos" with quotes gives these results. If snopes hasn't picked it up you quickly spot if its the same text with different locations put in.

/me checks post count, MR2GIRLRACER is a new poster so don't be too mean

Who posted snopes? Kernel? Good.

Let's put it this way - what you got in your email is almost certainly bollocks. It's certainly recycled from another email fom a different place as you can see from Kernel's link. I'd always check snopes (or "the internet") any time I got sent something like this by email. That's if I ever got stuff like this by email - people I know don't send me this stuff any more as they know I'll laugh like crazy at them next time I see them. Don't believe everything you read and all that. Actually, screw that, never believe anything you read where possible. Except for those "WARNING - NOT A TOY" warnings on plastic bags. Believe those.

Er -- newsflash :::

Any email that has the lines "this is not a hoax", or "forward this to everyone you know", is a hoax.

I don't know ..... people with too much time on their hands ... !

• Closed Accounts Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭Kingsize

there are other versions of this with apparent testimony from people saying
"it nearly happened to me" all bulls_it another urban legend im afraid.
I hate these emails especially the effect they seem to have on my work colleagues.

incedentally there are plenty of dodgy characters selling knockoff perfume around town & im sure some of them do operate out of car parks (as well as the side entrance to the ilac centre! )but as far as i know the only people they are "stealing from" are calvin klien & tommy hillfiger etc.

seriously if you wanted to steal a handbag why go to all that trouble when a bloody syringe will suffice.

I thought we might have seen the last of that email but .. alas, I was wrong :(

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,610 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

What a load of crap!!!! For one thing, a quick sniff of ether from a card won't do anything to you - try 10 minutes constant inhalation from a mask and you might get somewhere!

Reminds me of all the 'spiked drink' rubbish. "I can't remember anything so my drink must have been spiked", but not one confirmed case of it ever happening!

the actual scam idea is fairly regular,
when it becomes the knockout part its bogus

theres every chance that some woman was appraoiched on the keys to buy perfume, either there selling bottles of water or else theyll switch it,

like the guy that paid 400eu for a bottle of milk ;)

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,564 ✭✭✭✭whiskeyman

Some people believe any sort of hyped up warning like this.
Never seen an email with the damage speeding, smoking or drink driving does...

I just need one look at the petrol prices at the forecourt and I nearly pass out anyway....

no.

The scam side is common... the pretense to flog cheap/fake perfume.
The greater intent of the email is not... by using this as a means to kidnap / rape / steal valuables.

It's playing at a womens greatest fear.

ignore the hype.
Common sense and proper judgement should make you realise this.

To pass out from ether would require more than a sniff, they would need to grab you with a cloth like some scene out of James Bond.

I've got an idea - why don't you just fu(k off?
Honestly. A freaking chain e-mail. Why don't you just post another thread telling me how to add 4 inches to my penis, or consolodate my loans, or buy an on-line degree, or get cheap viagra?

THIS IS NOT PERFUME...IT IS ETHER

I can thnk of several liquid reagents that *might* manage this, ether isn't one of them (you would want to strongly inhale ether in a poor ventilated area, not just "sniff" it).

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

I know one of the girls that this has already happened to, so yes, i can say that this is not some hoax.

I'd ask her again. Carefully. And then shine a light in her ear to check her brain hasn't fallen out.

Well gee, i better stay away from any 'parking lots' or 'mailboxes', while i'm at it i better stay clear of the 'sidewalk'.

Me thinks this started from the good old US of A.

no,
just that someone has taken a common incident and twisted it.

my point would be that it may or may not be a troll.
the op could have been approached in similar circumstances but mistook the outcome to be some unlikely robbery, whereas it would actually be a simple "show and switch" style scam

Who is the original poster? They should be banned from posting again or given a labotomy. It's amazing the rise of the new internet superstion.

I might try and create a similar ridicular story up. How much either do you think you need to inhale to pass out?

You can't infect something with AIDS. You can't even infect someone with AIDS. It's an ACQUIRED SYNDROME (like the acronym says!) which is acquired through contracting the HIVirus - that which you can infect someone with. You can contaminate something with the HIV though, maybe that's what you meant? You can have HIV without having AIDS...

*is pedantic, but hateses incorrect stuffs*

Meanwhile, methinks that the "ether" email is prolly a hoax, but just in case, people should watch out. And in fairness, it'd have to be a pretty freaking sopping rag to hav enough fumes coming off it to knock you out - and wouldn't it do the same to whoever was holding it?!

LMAO!

Do you really think that if all of that really happened the first you'd hear of it is in an email/ on an internet forum and not on the front page of the Herald/Star/ on Joe Duffy/ Six1 news/ Gerry ****ing Ryan???!

COME ON FFS!

I don't think it's OK.

I went on intensive studies of how people on the internet trick newbies. Luckily I was sent an e-mail on how to get a college qualification on the subject. A nice man sent it to me who is in a little financial difficulty releasing funds so I am helping him out and a small benifit to me. :D:D:D

While we're on the subject....

Did anyone get an email from a "university student" studying spam mail??? She wanted everyone to send on their spam mail to her to see what and how much is floating around the internet. If its a scam to get email addresses I can think of a few easier ways!

Like giving your email address to any of the Clubs and Societies **** who give it to anyone and everyone.

But really. I wonder what "she" is at? Or is this the first ever genuine unsolicited email I've ever received!!!

It was on Gerry Ryan, some time last year some moron rang in to warn people about this.

But did any of you hear about the elderly lady in Italy that was offering people tea on trains and it contained drugs that put the victim to sleep then she would rob them to feed her gambling habbit. Now that one is true.

While I didn't believe the e-mail, it did mention blokes hanging around the Ilac Centre car park, which is (stating the obvious here) something to be wary of.

I was followed in that car park on my way back to the car one afternoon. Luckily I saw the chaps, made it blindingly obvious that I saw them, and walked past them back into the little pay-area. They obviously felt that they couldn't follow me *again*, so I was able to go back to the car, and I zipped out. The whole thing made me mighty uncomfortable... and put me off the Ilac.

thats complete bull****,this story however is true.........

It was about 3am when the women pulled into the cabinteely petrol station along the dual carrigeway, she was on her own and the place was completely deserted. She got out and went up to shop, the shop was shut apart from the glass box where you could talk to the shop keeper. She asked him for some smokes and he asked her are you travelling alone

she replied yes why

he replied dont turn around but a man has just jumped into the back of your car with a hammer and a rope

she asked him to open the shutters to let her in

he told her he had pressed the emergency button and that by the time he would be able to open the shutters the gardai would already be there so there was no point,so she waited there out on our own in the dark for 3minutes waiting for the gardai to arrive.

they evantually did and the man was arrested

pretty fukin scary and if anyone knows the station its completely ioscalated beside a big field.

SO BE WARNED~!

http://svmsl.chem.cmu.edu/vmsl/genanes/ga_bg3.htm
Sir James Young Simpson, a Scottish physician, was no stranger to anesthesiology. In 1847, he brought ether into the realm of obstetrics but found that its odor and the large amount needed to induce unconsciousness made it impractical as an anesthetic.
Ether , impractical as an anesthetic since 1847
you wouldn't get someone unconcious from the ether off a laminated sheet, as an aside 'bout a century ago people here were drinking ether because of a clamp down on poteen (tip - if you imbibe don't belch near an open fire)

Oh, I thought that you were doing it on purpose... If not, then sorry about the 'tone' of my post. I hate chain mails, and the people who put them out deliberately. However, no problems if you didn't realise. The way you said in your mail that you knew the girl etc.. is what made me think you were trying to start an Irish chain mail. Sorry for being a bit heavy.

It's just, it's bad publicity for us travelling perfume salesmen. ;)
