    And the external's 250GB hard drive's a bit pricey at €199!

Anyone know if this is SATA or IDE? Also do you just turn up on the morning, or is there a ticket system in LIDL?

Am going over at 8:45 to collect my speakers.. and that is all!

They'll probably have a fair few speakers.. as compared to the 3 or 4 they'll have of the PC. This is regarding the Sligo branch anyways.

its ide ? so it would work on the ps2 to then ?

    Specs are:

    Ultra ATA/133
    EIDE
It's actually a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 and comes with a Y Molex connector cable and a 3 Year warranty. Plenty of them left in Lucan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭Darwin

Plenty of drives left in Portlaoise as well, not really a great deal e.g. Komplett have 200GB Seagate Barracudas drives for 89 euros + 10 delivery although these are manufacturer repaired. TFT monitors were all gone in 5 minutes
I'll try my luck online I guess. If anyone else is looking, Dabs and pixmania have good deals on 17" TFTs (in particular certain Viewsonic and IIyama brands).

Just bought the 250GIG HDD. However it says on box its 250GB (unformatted). I installed it, formatted it, and total size now is 127GB. Please say im after done wrong somewhere and that I can get more space than 127GB out of it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,717 ✭✭✭Praetorian

You can certainly get more out of your 250 gb disk. Google is your friend.

this 130€ lidl drive costs 132 + postage on komplett, so it's a pretty good deal, no ?

Did you put it into a Win98 machine? There is a bug in win98 'format', restricting it to 127GB or less disks. MS have a patch for this somewhere on their site (sorry don't remember the location, found it for my brother a few months back).

Has anybody else had this problem? I've installed hard drives before and have never experienced such a dramatic fall in size than what was stated on the box!

google for 48 bit lba, mother board manufactuere, large hard drive support or visit the hdd manufacturres website and check for a large drive enabling tool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭egan007

format it with partition magic / there may be a jumper arrangement on the disk itself that restricts the size - read the label and see if this is the case.

I'm no hardware expert but it could be your bios might be restricting the size if its a an older one. You could try updating it. If its a fairly old machine that might be whats going on.

I had a similar problem with a machine and it was to with the bios and windows. Under linux I think the entire drive was available for formatting and partitioning. Its been a while though so I may be talking ##### on this part.

Check for a bios upgrade is your best bet.

Your bios might not be able to read drives greater than 127gigs.

Download MAXBLAST from the maxtor website. Make sure you have SP1 installed. Boot from the maxblast floppy disk or CD and install the drive. It is best to create partions under 127GB.

if getting a viewsonic tft from pixmania be careful as I was looking at the VX715 there and while the .fr and .co.uk sites had the model with a 16ms response time their customer support told me that the one on the .ie site is still the 25ms version.

Yeah.. got the speakers no hassle.

Bass seems fine in them. Have the subwoofer on the ground and the bass and treble levels at the 12 o clock position and seem fine.

Then i hooked it up to DVD Player, upped the bass and put on the scene with Bilbo's birthday in 'LOTR: Fellowship Of The Ring' DVD on and it sounded blooming amazing! The fireworks scared the shi*e outta me. :D

    Best €25 i ever spent!

If you're having problems with it, bring it back! They have plenty of them in there anyways. Lidl will have no problem with exchanging it, or refunding your money if you want.

Was anyone else amazed how quiet their Lidl was this morning? The one here in Sligo had a queue of about 30 people i arrived at 8:45 this morning. Still hilarious to see people running down the aisles for the computers!

    sci0x,
I have the same problem. Which of the solutions mentioned in this thread did you use?

At home (Austria), on more than one occasion people were fighting outside Hofer (Aldi) and Lidl because somebody was trying to jump the queue and police assistance was required to straighten out the situation.

Yeah.. as long as the PS2 has slot for audio input (either just a simple headphone jack, or the red and white right-and-left audio ports). Speakers are great actually. I thought they'd be pretty good.. but for €25, they were a bargain! Definantly a must buy!

The Memory Stick's are good value alright. You'rll probably have no hassle getting it but for some reason, the Sligo branch didn't have many of them. But girlfriend told me she saw a teacher in her old school leaving the store before we got in with a ton of them in her arms.

Anyways, speakers are highly recommended. Don't be too pushed if you can't get the memory sticks, you can get the same in Peats for about the same price last time i checked. Would have got one myself but i recently bought a really small 128MB one for the keyring.

Of if there is even another bricks and mortor store where i can pick up a second harddrive in the 100gb+ size for a decent price.

I got one yesterday, its a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 7200RPM IDE internal drive, it comes with a Molex splitter cable, a full size IDE data cable, screws, full instructions and an Irish helpline number, I have not fitted it yet but I would guess that when formatted the capacity should be about 220 Gb

picked one up and installed it yesterday and after formatting it ended up 233 Gb.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,319 ✭✭✭sci0x

To be honest, they should say on the box its going to be 233GB and not 250GB.

    250,000,000,000 bytes /1.024 = 244140625 Kilobytes
    244,140,625 Kilobytes /1.024 = 238419 Megabytes
    238,419 Megabytes /1.024 = 232.8 Gigabytes

FFS. Anybody that knows even a bit about computers knows that the capacity of a hard disk is dependant on the file system. How in the name of jazus does the manafacturer know what filesystem it's customer is going to use?

    Give us a break

All HDD's are sold assuming the buyer understands that 1GB=1000MB, 1MB=1000KB, etc ...not 1024*
This is just the way it is..suck it up ladies and stop whining..ALL HDD manufacturers do this...
Windows does use the 1024 system so reports things differently/more accurately

sci0x very nice breakdown there, shows this nicely.

    That's roight :)

BTW the memory sticks are very bad value for money tbh - the worst value for money I have seen PC and bits wise in Lidl or Aldi...

And Lidl Lucan had plenty of everything left around 6.30 PM Friday April 1st
