Phone them up to complain and say you're doing so on the behalf of your 12 year-old daughter. It's illegal for them to provide that service to under-16s and they may refund you.

Not the latest hits but a huge database.
There are pics and SS's on that site too, but they can be harder to find in general. You can access them from your WAP browser and you pay for the d/l but apart from that it costs nada, there are NO follow up spam messages (you never actually give them your number)

Also most mobiles are now either infrared enabled or can be connected to with a USB cable, you can easily upload your own pics. Just find out your phone's screen size/resolution and make/find/edit an image to fit.

A bit off topic, but I make all my ringtones myself using a piece of software called mp3trim and cdex to downgrade the bitrate to reduce the file size.

Right click then save as. Then transfer them to your phone using whatever connectivity you can.
If you put the address of the link into your WAP browser you can d/l it for 2c per kb. So an average midi file costs less than a text.
Doing them yourself is good but I can't be arsed...

I cant stand this jamster crowd, mainly because of thier blanket bombing ad campaigns, but charging people 4 euro for a text they didnt ask for is a joke.
As far as getting your own pics on your phone, theres www.cinema.com, they let you resize any pic to the screen size of your selected phone and upload it to your phone (costs money tho) but the smart person just takes a screenshot of the resized pic, saves it, and uploads it to thier phone via bluetooth :D
also if youre looking for ringtones, just google for '[band name here] midis'. I got some for my sister the other day, and transferred em by bluetooth to her phone. I myself download stuff from www.vgmusic.com Its free videogame midis, atm i have the bubble bobble music on my phone :)

I work for Vodafone, we have a full list of the 5 digit short codes that you receive messages from, the company who is providing them, the charges for each text message, their phone numbers and their text unsubscription codes. I would imagine that O2 and Meteor have similar lists.

In addition, we have full contact details for RegTel, who are the watchdogs for these companies. If you have unsubscribed and are still receiving messages and being charged, you can file an official complaint with RegTel who will investigate, and in some cases, issue hefty fines to the companies.

Vodafones number is 1850 208787 (Ready To Go) or 1907 (Postpaid).
    O2 is 1850 604747.
    Meteor is 1905.

When you ring, just say you are receiving texts from "premium short codes". Hope this is of some help to you.

Jamster are being sued in the states for all the reasons everyone has just mentioned.

    Heres an article -
Jamster, a service owned by VeriSign that sells ringtones and other content to mobile-phone subscribers, is under attack for allegedly misleading young consumers into paying for expensive text messages.

A lawsuit filed last week in San Diego accuses Jamster of fraud and false advertising, saying that it falsely advertises that mobile customers can get a free ringtone by sending a text message to the company. In reality, those customers then get text messages from Jamster that cost $1.99 each along with the mobile operator's standard per-message charge, according to the complaint brought by Charles Ford, who claims that his daughter was lured into the service. Ford's lawyers at Callahan, McCune & Willis filed the case on March 29 in the Superior Court of California for San Diego County, and are seeking to make it a class action on behalf of Jamster customers around the world.

Jamster is the U.S. name of Jamba, a German mobile content provider that VeriSign acquired in June 2004. The suit names VeriSign, Jamster, Jamba, and three U.S. mobile operators that Jamster says carry the service: T-Mobile USA, AT&T Wireless Services, and Cingular Wireless. VeriSign and T-Mobile declined to comment on the suit. Cingular, which now also owns AT&T Wireless, could not be reached for comment.

    Gripes Start
The Jamster service was launched in the United States late last year, the complaint says. The suit follows gripes from consumers there and in Europe, some of which are posted on Web sites like Grumbletext. One disgruntled customer, Jared Humphrey, started an online petition against the company. However, some posts on these sites indicate that unhappy users have been able to cancel their subscriptions and get refunds from Jamster.

Jamster ads on TV and other media say that mobile customers can get a free ringtone if they send a text message to the number displayed in the ad. But people who sent the text message received multiple response messages notifying them that content was available for download, according to the complaint. And customers had to pay for the messages. Consumers contacting the company have reported monthly charges totaling as much as $75 for content they neither wanted nor downloaded, said Charles Russell, one of the attorneys representing Ford.

    Revenue Generator
Downloads of content, especially ringtones and games, are a bright spot for mobile operators seeking to boost revenue. An IDC survey of mobile users last year found that more than half of respondents in Europe and about 25 percent in the United States had downloaded a ringtone. However, additional services that unexpectedly jack up the monthly bill could hurt the wireless industry if consumers get fed up, said Current Analysis analyst Eddie Hold. Mobile operators may get a per-message charge of a few cents but end up alienating confused subscribers, he said.

"There's no such thing as an easy-to-read wireless bill," Hold said. "The short-term revenue gain for three to six months ... or a year ends up biting them at the end of the contract when the customer believes they're paying too much for wireless service."

Premium text messaging--which enables customers to pay for content by receiving a text message and then getting the charge for it on their regular monthly phone bills--is commonly used, analysts said. But it can be implemented in different ways. For example, Flycell, a unit of Rome-based Acotel Group, which provides ringtones and other content with payment via premium text messages, sells monthly subscriptions to a selection of content. It gives customers two chances to opt in to the service before they pay for any content, and it offers customers the chance to opt out each month, according to Flycell's CEO and general manager Alberto Montesi. Flycell uses premium text messaging because it is more convenient to the mobile consumer than payment by credit card, he said.

In the case of Jamster, the service is advertised heavily on TV channels such as Nickelodeon that are aimed at children, according to the suit. (Jamster also advertises on PC World.) The company depended on drawing young mobile users into the service and then having their parents pay the charges, which appear on the monthly cell phone bill, the suit alleges.

I read somewhere recently (possible on boards somewhere) that Jamster were being investigated by Regtel as a lot of complaints had been received from people who had unsubscribed from the service but were still receiving messages and being charged for them.

Hopefully they are being investigated for this fraudulent practice and hopefully they'll be severely punished.

I'm no fan of ringtone companies, or the people who support them by buying from them in the first place, but a lot of people seem to be getting conned by them.

I hate all those ringtone companies too!

OK well I noticed I was getting charged and got double texts each month from them, got O2 to unsubscribe me and I asked Jamster to compensate me or ill report them.. here is how it went:

    Me:
    Hello,

Once again, I have to re-send you an email because the mail form on your website was simply pointless as it just sends out an auto responder. My mobile is +353 86 xxxxxxx (Irish) and is a Nokia model.

As outlined previously, I have been having some difficulties with Jamster's Services for quite some time now. My first issue was a good few months back when I ordered a ring tone on-line which came and never worked, and I got billed. I called your support team as the Jamster Customer Service phone number was available on your site at the time, but not any more, who tried sending the ring tone several times (wasting my money as I was getting billed for it not working) and eventually had to send me out the money I was billed for in the post (€10).

Since that time, I have been receiving two text messages a month (or there about) from Jamster. Little was I aware that I was getting billed for these texts that I had never subscribed to or was never made aware at any stage I was being charged until today when I noticed on checking my bill Jamster had charged me for each text (I am on a pay-as-you-go phone on the O2 Network) since being subscribed.

After failing to get the telephone number for support on your website, and your web form being a complete failure and waste of space, I had to call O2 Customer Service who where aware of the matter and informed me many people had complained of Jamster subscribing them to there newsletter and billing them. O2 provided me with contact numbers - and on using these I was told by your automated machine to hold the line before eventually being told to email as no service rep. was available. I re-rang O2 who where able to unsubscribed me from your service themselves (they knew how, so did it for me) and was told to take up the getting billed by Jamster, with yourselves.

Since you have compensated me before, I would hope not to have any difficulties with getting compensated for the money I lost for the texts which I did not request. If on failing to get compensated, I have prepared a letter for the appropriate authorities to take the matter further.

    I await your immediate response.

    Regards,
    Kevin O'Sullivan

on the phone to meteor 1905 now about this
i didnt think theyd be working this late

Apparently some git has signed me up with two of these scamming showers of bastards. I've certainly never put my number on any websites, ive had the same poxy ringtone for more than 5 years and if i changed it i probably wouldnt know it was my phone when it rang.
They Meteor guy told me to phone:
ph.0818242311 for the ones coming from 57757 and
ph.01 2186831 for the ones coming from 53503 and tell them to stop sending me sh!te messages. Presumably these numbers only work during office hours.

I doubt they have got much money out of me as there is rarely any credit on my phone but seeing as im going to have to call them from a payphone during the hours in which i normally sleep i think i will spend my small change berating them and telling them what a pack of dirty sh!tsucking leeches they are.

Why don't you email them? From what other users are saying, their phone number never works and you only get through (after much waiting it seems) to a pre-recorded message saying you should email them.

I'm sure some of the above wont mind giving the email addy
