Growing your hair long?

I have a bet with one of my mates. Whoever cuts their hair first owes the other person €40. We've been going for about four months now and I look like a 70's cop / Ringo Star. I've only realise how much I took the aul shaved head for granted now. Is there a certain way your suposed to cut your hair before you start growing it so you don't look like an idiot half way through?

I'm growing my hair too but not for a bet,my hair is curly so It the lenght will get caught up in there. My hair was like yours at one point you know looks like you have a fro in the making :)......But I put a split in it and It doesn't look have bad, this may not work for everyone how long is your hair ??

I think the main problem with growing your hair from being really short is that it ends up being all different lengths (well technically it's all the same length, but obviously the hair that's starting from the top of your head will end before the stuff at the bottom, if you get me), so possibly when it's long enough to do so, you can cut the lower layers so it evens out a bit. Of course that's just my theory, and since that's cutting you might lose your bet....
It'll look pretty awful for a while, though.

My hair isn't that long at the minute. I havn't measured my hair in a good while but the last time I did It was only about 5-7 cm long on top. Its the way it's growing that gives it the cop look. Its doesn't look as long on the top than it does on the sides eventhough the sides are slightly shorter. It's realy strange. I've been thinking of gelling my hair or something to try and keep the horizontal bush effect to a minimum.

That seems sensible. I'll probably do something minor that won't be noticed much when it gets to that stage.

Yeah forgot to mention I did that for about a month or two and you wouldn't think it was that bad, give it a go and see what happens.....

I've been letting mine grow for maybe four, five months now. It doesn't look all that flattering right now, especially when it's just been washed and dried, and each hair decides it's a bloody individual and goes its own way. But I shall continue, because I have a vague idea what it'll end up looking like when it's wet and more controllable.

    What he said ^^

TBH, the first year (possibly two) will be an absolute git for growing your hair and will look most unflattering. Pray you can carry off the 'shaggy' impersonation ;)

Isn't there a special kind of scissors just for thinning out your hair a bit? I seem to remember the barber I used to go to when I was growing my hair years ago using one. If I remember correctly, it's got a serated edge on one blade while the other looks normal. I think the scissors is a little loose so it doesn't cut right through everything. I've got short hair right now but I'm thinking of letting it grow out a bit. I've heard your hair only grows about 6 inches a year and there's not much you can do to speed it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Pyr0

Heh 6 Inches is good enought for me,my hair is bout to my eyes..But If I was to straighten it I'd say it could make it past my mouth.....but thats not going to happen :)

I'd say look at the ac milan website, did you see them playin united last week, maldini, nesta, gattuso, kaka, crespo, rui costa, kaladze and pirlo all had long hair (look like girls if you ask me)

you're all a bunch of hippeis to be honest. Get your hair cut :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

You could undercut it. Beware though because if not done properly you can look even more like a twat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

I used to have long hair, sorta the same style as tom cruise had in Mission Impossible II. The first year is always the worst, your hair looks like crap, and you need to keep getting undercuts to make it look ok. Once its beyond a certain length though it tends to look fairly good, its just getting there thats the problem.

I liked having long hair, until one night some **** thought I was a girl on the dance floor of a night club, the next day I got it cut short... though I do miss it at times!

I have had a bet for over a year with my friend. only bleedy €20 but its funny. he had his hair a bit long when i shaved mine a year ago so i had the advantage. i would normally cut my hair every 2-3 mths so i have saved a bit. at the moment my fringe goes nearly over my right eye and my long beautiful hair is curling at the end (no curls like loop the loops-i mean like a little slope).
i would sometimes wear a hat over my head in windy weather coz it would blow all over the place. Another pain is that when i'm eating or drinkin i'v got some hair stuck in my mouth and must brush it away. well i hope i win the bet soon coz i'v got more portfolio appointments comin up!
[long hair can have its advantages.NOTE: men some girls actually love stroking that long smooth hair.]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Had my hair growing for several months until today, got it cut and the bastard cut it too short. Top is decent enough length but sides are way too short, ****.
Anyway, Im going to let the sides slowly grow while trimming the top enough to gel because otherwise the top gets too heavy and uncontrolable while the sides look normal.

How long would you need your hair to be to get an under-cut WITHOUT looking like a spa :) ??

Pyr0, I've seen you're hair and an undercut wouldnt suit you.

Yes - this cutting business - I've got about 7 months growth on me at this point and need a minor cut, just to tidy things up. Afraid to do it though - every time I've done a minor cut in the past I've ended up with either a crap haircut or a shaved head due to repeated barber cock ups. Any idea where to go or what to ask for. I don't mind paying a bit to get it done right, in a way I like it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,878 ✭✭✭Rozabeez

Why not just tie the hair up untill it groes more?

    I'm in the same boat

I started growing my hair long about a year and a half ago, after 6 months it went past the "Ringo Starr" look and just looked horrible, so I got it trimmed. Unfortunately it looked really bad for a few weeks after that (as anyone who attended GalwayLAN XI or saw the pics will confirm), but when it grew back it looked more "normal".....

Now it's down past my mouth and I don't have any intentions to cut it :)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

I was growing mine for about a year before I got the back trimmed, and due to the unfortunate shape of my head and length of hair.. I ended up with the exact same hairstyle as a girl in my class for about 5 months.

    fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭Matthewthebig

I grew my hair from pretty short and the Ringo period was very annoying. Then it just sort of collapsed into what long hair is meant to be like. I got it trimmed about 10months ago mainly for split ends (I'm aware that is a very feminine thing to say) but now its past my shoulders and i wouldn't want ti anyother way.

Growing your hair long is not for pussies.

If you can't bear not looking 100% cool for a few months then long hair is not for you. Gettting "maintenance cuts" will just slow the growing down.

I haven't got a haircut since about August and it was about blade 4 length then. It's just about looking like long hair should now, looks cool when straightened I might add ;) .

A good tip during the "bad hair period" is after your hair is dry(blow drying will reduce the frizz also) get a small bit of gel(I had some Brylcream Ultragel left over from my short hair days) and perhaps dilute it with a small amount of water and flatten down your hair with it, you should use just enough so it weighs down your hair but doesn't stick it to your head.

I've had long hair for nearly 15 years now and the worst thing to do is get an under-cut - growing that out, without shaving your head is a nightmare

TBH, when I started growing my hair it wasnt that bad - took a while to settle down - but if you keep checking it in the mirror, its going to look worse to you. Best thing is to ignore it

I got my head shaved in June and it hasn't been at all maintained yet - and it's not really getting long - it's more that there's the fecking big mane hanging out from behind my ears that doesn't yet reach to my shoulders - and whats more - it has another 4 or 5 inches to go to get there.

I'll try your tip though. Blowdrying isn't going to work though - I cycle to work and shower there - so I can hardly blowdry my hair at work - it'll take forever. Will try your gel tip though...

ANYway, regular smoothie drinking, or general added calcium and fruit intake will make your hair and nails grow like rabbits. by regular i mean once a day.
and also can somebody explain to me WHY boys grow their hair so long (and i mean past the shoudlers long). the majority of guys then proceed to letting it scraggle and knot and generally matte. and matthewthebig this is also directed at you, apparently you're in need of a haircut.

According to who? My hair only gets like that if i don't get a chance to wash it. But normally it is very good condition!

I ever did that, last year my hair was about past my chin and I had to get it cut.well I got paid too, and now its getting back to its length, I think its 7 inches on the fronth now...I just splitted it when it was past my eyes

i dont much like long hair(on SOME guys)tho on others it can suit

I was trying to grow my hair for a while, and as anyone who's seen my Know Your Nerds photo will have seen the afro thing I had goin on...

I since got sick of it and got it "cleaned up" but yer man took too much off and it was fairly short but it's pretty much back with a vengance now...

I'm gonna leave it and see what happens but my hair is too curly and thick so I don't think long hair will suit me (i can't see it growing "down" per sé since it's so thick... just "out")

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

a friend of mine had curly hair, and he started growing his shortly after/before me. His hair was in the afro stage for a pretty long while, but once it got long enough it looked pretty kickass :)

I've been so bored of the whole neat and tidy look, so I'm planning to grow my hair a bit.. Not a big pony tail thing, just kinda bushy. I want it so that when I wear a cap it stick out and looks bushy. That in my oppinion is where the future is headed my amigos!

I quite like hats, but I can't find one that comfortably fits my head.

    It's sad.

My mate bought a quicksilver hat from Tribe, it's so sexy. It's grey outside and red on the inside. Like a beany or whatever you call it. I have a cool trucker tho.
