*boots feylya in nads* This is seriously pissing me off! I want that guitar, and it was such a great deal and everything! BOLLOCKS!!!!

You're gonna want to change your signature too. Have you your other guitars sold yet? Sure keep an eye on Chris's site and get a better guitar :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Nah. No bites on the Ibanez yet. I'm trying to get rid of the MG as well. I'm going to get rid of those methinks and see where I go from there. I'll still have the acoustic to widdle away on anyway.

What amp are you running through at the moment? That should give you about €400 to play with? Interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I'm using a Marshall G30RCD. I'm only really using it for cleans, my Big Muff does the rest, so it's grand for the moment.

Actually I should do better than that. I've got the guitar up for 500 and the amp for 80. I'm accepting offers like but I don't want to go too much lower on either than that. I needs the money for a better guitar. Pissed off at the moment. I love the bite from an SG and you just don't get that with any other guitar. I can't afford a special or a standard these days, though there is a chance of some good money in the not-too-distant future if I sell something large and random.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Mmm, money. He has a Epiphone G-400 on the site with a borked truss rod for $125. It's crying out to me to fix it, stick on 12's on it, tune it to C and play some QOTSA!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I saw that alright. Or you could be really different, throw on 14's and tune to F, and I mean low F. :) I think Kyuss did that at some stage...

What do you think would be a good price for the stuff? I want to get the best I can for them. Damn you Steve!!!!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

14's eh? Didn't even know you could get those. Must get the Desert Sessions stuff. Most of QOTSA's stuff comes from there.

Flog the lot of it for €550 in the Buy And Sell tbh.

The guitar's already in the Buy and Sell. I might put both in together next week. I think 14's might have to be custom ordered. Damn it. I have enough to have put a deposit on the SG, about 120. That and the money for the RG and the amp brings me to around the 670 mark. Any ideas?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

What sort of guitar do you want? Fixed bridge, floyd, set neck, bolt on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I'd be open to most things, though a fixed bridge would be a nice change. What I really want is that strong bite of the SG. As regards neck-build, I'm not too particular, though a set neck would be nicer than the bolt-on I have at the moment. The sound comes first though. I wan that sharp, edgy tone.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Ibanez SZ520 :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Meh. Little too smooth for my liking. I want that edge that only the SG has, and as of now I can't afford an SG, so lets hope I sell something large and random.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    What about an ESP Viper?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Just doesn't have the same versatility tbh. It looks like I might be seeing a windfall anyway so fingers crossed. An SG will be mine at some point.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Same versitility? Ya wha?

    http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/thoiw6_esp_ltd_viper_400_fm_black_egitarre_prodinfo.html

Looks just like a more metal SG.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

The Viper suits metal best, whereas the Gibson fits into every genre, yet still retains its characteristic bite.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Actually, I know a guy selling a Viper 301 with Gibson pickups for about €400. If you're interested, I'll give ya his email.

I'll think about that actually. It looks like I might be getting some extra money soon, bringing me over the 1200 mark, which would be quite nice. I'm thinking possibly new bass or bass setup too with a little extra work and money and whatnot. I assume it's an LTD. What kind of specs are on it do you know? And where is it? I'd like to try before I buy, not sure how the Gibson pickups would suit the Viper.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    It's a guy in England unfortunately. It's a mahogany body I think.

    €1200 eh? Get this :D:

There's something about that guitar that just... doesn't appeal to me. Whereabouts in England is he? It's handy enough to get over there and I'm just about interested enough in this to give it a look-in. The body wood was the thing I was looking for. Couldn't find anything about it on the ESP site anyways. Want to PM me his e-mail address? I'd definitely give it a look-in if I had a chance anyway.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Eh, can't remember where abouts he is actually. I'll give him a shout later, find out if it's still available and I'll send you his contact details then.

Yeah, there won't be anything on the site. The 301 series of guitars was discontinued.
ESP enthusiasts know the Viper's features: mahogany body in an offset-waist "batwing" shape, with EMG-HZ H-1 pickups, tune-o-matic bridge with stop tailpiece, three-piece mahogany neck set into the body, rosewood fretboard with flag inlays and model name inlaid at 12th fret, Eclipse shaped headstock, and white binding along the neck and headstock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Yeah, might still hold out for the Gibson. Any reviews I've got on the Viper seem disquieting to say the least. I wouldn't be sure enough of its versatility.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Well, what sort of versitility are you looking for? You're going to get a pretty similar sound from a Gibby SG anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

A Gibson SG seems to fit into every conceivable genre. Maybe it's a stupid prejudice but I just don't think an ESP can do that.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I think you're getting a bit hung up on the names and quite possibly on image. Considering the Viper is a copy of an SG, with the same woods and building techniques, it's got a pretty high chance of sounding somewhat similar to the SG (depending on pickups of course).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

To be honest you're probably right. I don't know. It'll be a while anyway so I guess I'll see how things go.

Why don't you think about a custom build? Someone like Gerry Hayes (www.hazeguitars.com) or LGM (www.lgmguitars.com)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

JGM are a bit too far on the metal side for my thinking, but I'm having a look through the Haze website at the moment and it seems pretty damn cool.

    TBH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Not the greatest fan of P90's myself but that's what custom is all about really. I could just as easily stick in a couple of nice big humbuckers. :)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Exactly. What sort of music are you going to be playing on the thing anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Pretty much everything. I still need something to cover everything from punk to thrash. I really like the look of the natural finished Les Paul he has there. That with the aggressive tone form an SG and a slightly nicer neck and fret job and David would be one happy boy. :)

    Fat strat tbh :p

I'm thinking about buying some wood and properly trying to build a neck through ESP M-II copy. Maple neck, alder body. Should cost me about €50 for that. Route it for a dual action truss rod. If that all works out, spend money on the truss rod and fretboard. The apply finish to the guitar. If it all works out, buy hardware for it. Yes, I am crazy :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Fat Strat just doesn't have the sharpness though. That's its one failing.

Sounds like it'd be an interesting project, and if you do it in increments like that you can't lose a whole lot at once. :) I say go for it.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

You could always swap out the pickup...

Just pricing woods. €40 each for a rock maple neck blank and 2 pieces of alder plus whatever shipping would be. That's €100 before the fretboard (which is €60)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Which isn't too bad, considering what an actual M-II will set you back. :)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye. It'd be close enough to a grand when I'd be finished it.

Wood (body, neck, fretboard) - €160
Hardware (bridge, pickups, knobs, tuners) - €600
    Finishing Supplies - €100

Pricey enough. Unless I went the eBay route.

It wouldn't be so bad though as you'd be building it up bit by bit as you could afford new materials. It'd still cost much less than a real ESP too. :)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye, that it would. I actually just want to try and build the neck and body as an experiment. Besides, there's nothing like a guitar with POC Custom on the head :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Yeah, beats the pants off "Hungus" :D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Most definately. Wonder if ESP will sue me...

    Excuse my terrible photoshop skills.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I'm going to say... yes, but hey! Any publicity is good publicity, right? :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yeah... I used to actually have that ESP font too. It'd look nice inlayed in mother of pearl but no inlayer am I. If I make this, I'm gonna call it None More Black. Black body, ebony fretboard, black head, black neck, black pickups, black Floyd, black knobs. Mmm. But would I bother with LED's as side dots...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

    Only if they're black! ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Crap. There's another flaw in my plan. And I was looking for black fret wire too :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Matte black paint to be honest should do the job. Could go for a really striking inlay too at this point. That'd really stand out well.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Black gloss tbh. Matt looks horrible on guitars imo. A Guitar should be shiny as hell. And no inlays. Unless it's ridiculously ornate, they annoy me.
