I think you have too much money for your own good!!

Its a nice machine, if you want it go for it.

I'd get Dell XPS2, if it comes to Ireland, or Sager, will come out cheaper, and it''s basically the same

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

I would have great difficulty recommending any Dell products.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 347 ✭✭DirtyHarry

first off IncredibleBulk, its a laptop! second of all if u have the money buy it. Its a kick ass machine. Otherwise buy smething else. I wouldnt buy it even if i had the money coz its a damn heavy bulky thing. Laptops are meant to be light and very portable. But its ur money and decision!

    Cheers

I would love to see you build a laptop ;)

My g/f has an m5500 (yes, that was not a typo) and they are really really sweet. The attention to detail, even in the extra stuff they send with the laptop, really is quite impressive.

Alienware boxes are silly money though. Depends what you're looking for. Slim & portable, or a desktop replacement that just so happens to be portable.

TBH, if I had the money I'd get one. I don't (and I've got a Sony laptop anyway which serves my purposes whenever I'm away from my main rig) so it's a bit moot.

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

Yeah my mistake did not realize it was a laptop.

If it was possible to custom build a laptop I would.

what I forgot to ask is, why do you need such machine first of all?

you know that a laptop, will never be a true "desktop replacement"

    so what for?

like DirtyHarry said, laptops should be small or atleast not that big, if you want to have just a cool laptop and want alienware I'd go for 5500

  • Site Banned Posts: 313 ✭✭revo

well i just wanted one that will last me a good while. i know its big but to be honest i have a laptop and dont bring it anywere but to lans. its a brutal machine now . i was looking at the 5500 but it aint as powerfull as the 7700 and there aint much difference in the price either what iw as looking at is 3000 euro inc postage

well the only reason I would not buy it is because I don't like big laptops, but other than that, it's awesome laptop, the size is not a matter for you, so I say go for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

maybe buy a desktop, an lcd and a car battery + power invertor, might be a bit less bulky.

why would you need a 2hdd raid setup in a laptop?
most of that stuff is ridiculous, the thing ways a ton and is baout 3 inches thick.
for that money you could buy a top notch laptop every 18months for the next few years tbh

from what i hear, p4's give out alot of heat which isnt good for a laptop.

pentium-m, amd low mobile might be a better option, better in the sense that their designed especially for laptops. nothing wrong with alienware, just slightly pricey.

    Hi revo2008,

Nearly bought a 7700, but bought an XTI(see sig.)from Rock Direct instead. I have it a month, and its the dogs. Its the same laptop as 7700(same clevo D900T chassis/ m.board), its a big beast@ 5.5 kgs-dont buy if you plan to drag it around all day.You should give rock a look. The Sager 9860 is also more or less the same laptop, but they are based in US, bad news if something goes wrong.
    Reasons were:
Too many AW support horror storys,
(mate had 5500, had serious probs/unloaded on e-bay)Rock have excellent support/3yr. warranty.
Xti comes with 'Xglass' glossy screen, and they had the MR X800 at the time.
Rock are a small company, professional to deal with and prompt to reply-no waiting on hold for 20mins+
Also Im Vat reg.,so no UK Vat to pay :)

also question to alienware owners, if something happens, do they come and pick up the laptop like dell or you have to send it to them yourself?

  • Site Banned Posts: 313 ✭✭revo

Alienware offer an incredibly poor service overall.. Their highend machine is drastically overpriced, oversized and under powered compared to the new Dell's..

I ordered a Dell 9300 last week. I posted the spec'd on another thread. It ws 2,100.. The XPS2 is now available for order from Dell and will push 3,000. It comes with the 6800 ultra and it seems Dell have this exclusively.

check alienware and dell sections at www.notebookforums.com

I think you managed to get the least value for your money. What I mean by that is that laptop is a desktop replacement they arnt really made for lugging around so from this I take portability isint a massive concern.

If thats the case I dont understand why you wouldnt consider building the ultimate desktop seems crazy to me.

But to each their own I guess :)

The alienware is 14 pound including the charger. The Dell XPS2 is 8 pounds I think. Thanks some heavy yoke. I hear ya about desktops though, I had one for the past 8 months and had to go back to a laptop.

cheers mate. i was looking at the aw desktops. i just want aw as i have always. the 5500desktop is brutal compared to the 7700 lappy and aw best desktop starts at 3100 without anything else so i think i got a good lappy for what i could afford

7700 will play most games at max settings anyway, so you'll not need a desktop.
    The MR X800 is the buisiness,HL2 benchmark from Guru3D, no overclocking(yet ;) )I'm getting:

    640 x 480 = 160.0 fps
    800 x 600 = 160.1 fps
    1024 x 768 = 157.3 fps
    1280 x 1024 = 128.4 fps
    1600 x 1200 = 92.0 fps

    Detail: Maximum quality
    Antialising mode: From system
    Filtering mode : From System
    Hardware DirectX Level: DirectX9
    Heapsize: 64 MB - default

edit-you can also use the Catalyst Mobility Modifier for X800 convert ATI Catylyst to mobility version, so you don't have to wait for AW to upgrade drivers

You'd be getting all sorts of abuse if you bought a dell aswell, so just ignore it. That looks like an incredible piece of hardware, enjoy!
