Making Basic 2D Games

Dose anyone know where I can download a free 2D gaming engine? I want to start making some simple 2D games, I've never made any games before and i'm looking for a good starting point. Any advice would be much apreciated

Game Maker seems to be quite popular, no coding needed and there's no restriction on what you do with finished games:
