When it feels right and with the right person

Assuming you want to, do so at whatever age where sex is commonplace amongst you and your peers. You don’t want to lose your cherry and find that you have to wait three years before you get your next shag.

It's interesting that you think it is unusual to still be a virgin at 16. I think you are below the national average age to lose their virginity which is 17-18. And if you consider that this information comes from surveys and most guys will lie about when they lost their virginity, the actual average probably higher.

I lost my virginity at 16, which I consider early. I was one of only about 10 people in my year of about 120 people who had. Most of my friends didn't have sex for a couple of years after. The oldest one being 22. So you don't need to feel inadequate about not having sex yet.

The best time for you to have sex is when you are with someone you care about or love, when you are both ready and it is something you both want to do.

It's really not that big a deal. To be getting worried at 16 that you should be doing it soon is crazyness. Do if you want to, but don't do it because you think you *should*.

Wait, dont just rush into anything.

Its not about who does it first, its about who does it best.

Find the right person. Make sure you trust them and they trust you. Your first time will be filled with little mistakes and errors, you will definetly not want to be with someone who will make you feel any more uncomfortable about the entire thing, you might end up being really hung up on something which is a minor thing.

    Be careful too, use protection.

you could talk to an older sister or cousin who you trust about there first time. Maybe them knowing you a little better could advise you more intimately?

    Above all, have fun.

Personally, I think 16 is still too young, but it is different for everyone. The most important thing is to be comfortable and happy with the person you do eventually sleep with. They don't have to be the love of your life, but if you're not comfortable with them, you'll always regret it.

Personally, I was 20. And I'm glad that I slept with the person that I did. I wasn't in any hurry. It's not a millstone around your necjk

I was 19 when I lost mine. You know when your ready to have sex for the first time, it's this feeling you get.

I think the age has gone down in some what, but just because people your age are doing it doesnt mean you do. Peer presure and all. I was about 14- going on 15 when i lost mine :P But at time i wish i waited.

to be honest, for most people, i've always found this issue revolved around Can I and not Should I. Can't think of one guy that said to me, I could have but I felt I wasn't ready. I'd imagine it may be different between the genders. I don't think the age matters, within reason, as long as it's a positive experience.

As soon as you can. Virginity is unhealthy, sordid, dangerous, and not something to be proud of.

you're talking to a 16 year old mate! thats hardly going to be helpful. im surprised you didnt throw in a "make sure you dont use a condom"

anyway to the OP, as clichéd as it sounds, just wait until you're ready.
don't do it for the sake of getting it over with. if you're with someone you like and are sensible about it then go for it. there are too many young girls getting pregnant these days because neither they nor their boyfriends know what they're at.

    Still 17 and waiting.

Here's a test I saw on TV so you can see if you're ready (horrible show; Girls in Love). I happen to think it's a good test. If you can walk into a boots with a friend, take condoms from the shelf, and go up to the counter and buy them on your own WITHOUT BLUSHING, you're ready.

A 4 year old would buy condoms without blushing. Perhaps Michael Jackson came up with this test.

Since the age of consent in Ireland is 17, at 16 you certainly shouldn't be thinking about whether its time or not. There's too many risks involved (teenage pregnancy, possible transmission of STDs, potential of a statutory rape case), so you shouldn't just do it for the sake of it. Also, I'm 20 and still waiting, gulp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭krattapopov

well I think the general advice on the thread has been don't do it for the sake of it.... but if they do find the right person at 16 and they do they take all the necesseary precautions then in my books there is no problem with it...

to the original poster... it happens when it happens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

Like most of the posters here, you limiting factor is going to be opportunity rather than choice.

I'm 16 and still waiting for (i.e. trying to get) a girl to even like me... (and for it to work out right..)
I know 16 year olds who haven't even asked girls out yet.

I'm not too worried about the whole being-16-and-no-luck-at-all* thing, so the being-16-and-no-sex thing doesnt seem a problem either... (just imho)

although admittedly it is *****n lonely...still..the age thing doesnt get to me... :)

Women can wait until whenever they are ready, men on the other hand are more or less born ready so if u dont lose it by about 18 you are probably **** with women and not in fact waiting for the right girl so dont talk balls tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,230 ✭✭✭OLDYELLAR

I would`nt worry about it too much , at 16 you`ll probably meet a load of people lying about it telling you there getting a right lashing every weekend.
There is no right or wrong age , its not as though theres an expiary date on it , I suppose when you find someone your comfortabe with and your both feeling ok about it .

dont rush into it, wait until you've found someone you know will stick around afterwards, who's not just in it for their hole. (for the want of a better word) for some people thats when they're 14/15/16, for some its 50, its a personal thing really and u cant compare yourself to anyone else inthis situation. only you know how you feel and you'll really know when you feel it and you'll know the time is right. =) but stay safe!

On the subject, has anyone seen that Channel 4 thing where they have a montage of all the "celebs" telling the age at which they lost their cherry? Is it jsut me or do like half of them say they lost it under the age of 16? Quite young in my opinion.

Sort it out yourself with horse-riding lessons or a phallic-shaped fruit or vegetable.

That way, the first time you're with someone you care about, it aint a problem, you can relax and enjoy the ride.

there is no age limit as to when one should loose their virginity. you can keep it until your 80 if you like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

And if you do I guarantee you miss out on a large part of life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

I just don't see why people should set a time limit at whicfh they should lose their virginity. being a virgin until the age of 18 or 20 is not necessarily evil, nor does it make a person some sort of freak.

if your going to force it to happen prematurely, before you are ready, then your going to end up disappointed.

I know someone who lost their virginity at 15, and didn't get to have sex again until 6 years later. Conversely, I know someone who didn't lose it until 19, and has been having sex regularly ever since.
It might seem like a milestone and a big deal now, but in a couple of years, you'll realise that it's not such a big deal. And trust me, the first time is nearly always rubbish..

This is a common sentiment. Although, I think people tend not to regret it so much if they feel they are in a relationship where it was a worthwhile rubbish experience.

Go watch the film "Kinsey" (18, so technically I think you need to bring Mammy) and talk to the biology teacher in school.

i know a bloke who lost his when he was 16 to a slapper in the pub jacks! (ye i know, 16 in a pub, who'd hav thought!). he told me he regretted it and to wait. i was then offered t by some slapper from sheffield when i was 16 but i turned it down (reason being i had a gf back home though i probably deep down wasnt ready). then a few g/f's later when i was 18, i did he job. was wit her for nearly 4 years. no regrets. my first kiss however, wish i waited. she was some minger! ;)
just kissed her so i could say i kissed someone! kids, eh?

I was a lot younger than all the ages mentioned in this thread when I lost mine and didn't get it again for another 4 years. I lasted no more than 1 minute the second time and it was the most embarrassing time of my life. It took me a while to get over it, knowing that girls tell their friends everything. I'd certainly have preferred to have waited until I was 18/19/20 than go through that again.

Personally, I don't really count those two times as actually having sex since I've had a couple of girlfriends and things have changed. :)

    18 - 4 = 14. So you had more than one g/f at the same time? ;)

when ever you feel ready, i regret the first time i had sex(peer presure) dont do it until you feel right!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭vibrant

I was 19 - and looking back at it now I could have even waited longer. I was (hell, I still am) quite the immature lass.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭*Page*

i was 16, by the way. my current boyfriend lost his at 14... most of my mates lost theres around 13-4 and had been kissing and doing hand job's and more at about11-2(i was still playing with barbies and my little ponys and am very proud of this!!!)

i got pushed into both my first kiss(15) and loss of virginity(16) and because the a$$ hole that i had sex with didn't know how to put a condom on right i ended up pregnant! so dont do anything until you are ready.. if your a girl go get a vibrator and enjoy masterbation for a few more years and if your a guy buy the mae version!!

dont take that risk (it will never happen to me=oh yes it will)
be in a good relationship too.

When I lost mine my girlfriend wanted to before I did (I totally loved her too) - but we waited till I was ready so that stuff about guys being born ready is BS.

Have some balls and do it when YOU are damned well ready :D
Don't worry you're not likely to drop dead before you've had sex.

Like most people in this thread, I'm going with the "wait until you're ready" idea. There isn't an age that you should lose it. It's more important to be happy with that person you're with. You won't remember every time you have sex but you will definitely remember the first time (unless you're plastered of course, which isn't a good idea) so make it special and with someone you WANT to remember, not some minger in a pub toilet, urrgh
