Why do I hear so many stories of Nigerians pulling scams in this country??

I don't know what type of country Nigeria is, but they seem to be well up on the 'oul scam or two.

I think this was posted here before.

I think the majority of Nigerian scams are more along the lines of people who are not Nigerian pretending to be Nigerian royalty and requiring your bank details.

I just pity the genuine representatives to multi million dollar dead kings and businessmen that have millions lying in some bank account waiting for YOU to syphon THEIR money for them. I mean, if I was a Nigerian that had to have YOUR details just so that I could receive my legally owned 31MILLION DOLLARS AMERICAN and you didn't give me them because of these bad apples scamming everyone: I'd be fairly upset. I heard a statistic a while ago that 1 in 3 nigerians in this country already have a criminal record, very sad. These scams are rife on the Internet, people are encouraged to play along with the game and pretend to be an unspecting victim, just to pull strings. I think I might do it next time I recieve one just for fun...

the reason that we see so many nigerian criminals in this country is that they are nearly the only ones that can afford to get out of the country, the majority of good nigerians are still stuck in nigeria. on a side note and from personal experience other africans seem to hate the nigerians, its as if they are a particularly viscous tribe / group. before you try and burn me at the stake i couldn't care less if you were blue!!

I was talking to my neighbour the other evening and asked him has he got much abuse since he move over here. He is from Indonesia and he said a little. His sum up on it was because so much trouble follows the nigerians all non nationals get tared with the one brush. He lived in london for 14 years and told me the Nigerians were the ones pulling the majority of scams in England and are doing the same in his homeland at the moment.

I have 2 nigerian mates, went to college with them in Leicester...one is a rich prince and basically bribes everyone and anything to get his way....while the other is like Dellboy from only fools and horses..... He has 4 mobile phones for all his bussinesses and different girlfriends....absolutely gas but as crooked as ****....he was able to get anything you might "want" from watches to computers to cars.... :eek: Is he a criminal...not as far as he's concerned!!!

I'll be watching this topic like a hawk. I won't lock it. I feel that it's as justified as asking "Is (sic) there a lot of Italians who are sleazy sex maniacs?" or "Is there a lot of Irish who are alcoholics?". However, I'd like to see reasonable debate and/or reasonable opinion, and absolutely no stats without back up. Zascar, for example.

And try and separate nationality and colour. Anyone who hijacks this to say that there are too many blacks in Ireland will be banned.

I think you make a very good point there, and it's certainly far more of a thing with nationality than colour. I've lived with a black guy for 5 years, he was from Zimbabwe, and we got on great, he was really sound. But you can really notice the different in behaiveour, personallity and general humour in someone from Nigeria, and for example someone from Zimbabwe.

I think it's because of the country itself, it's government is absolutely rotten to the core, and seems to rub off on the people.
But my sloppy, and probably very blunt point being, it's certainly not about race/colour.

Any Garda who deals with fraud issues will tell you (off the record) that many Nigerians in this country are involved in scams like 419 letters, cheque frauds, etc.

This may be a very simplified and isolated example, but yes, there are black guys in my school and i have to say their personalities a very different as to their nationality. For instance, one guy is a very good friend, he can laugh and joke and is a funny guy, and hes from Zimbabwe. Then theres two nigerians, one is in my class and is just generally an asshole in his dealings with people, teachers, students etc. The other guy is younger and has got in a lot of trouble over shouting racism at any given opportunity. So i think maybe there is such a thing as a general mentality of a nation/culture ie the irish are known for being laid back but i know a lot of uptight assholes. Now obviously ya cant go around labeling everyone the same, but its still something to take into consideration i guess

I honestly think you would be hard pressed to point out a Nigerian from any other black person, but the second one of them robs a purse or cheats someone they magically become Nigerian.

I've worked with Nigerians in work, never had any hassle. Sound people and quite intelligent.

I worked with a LOT of Nigerians in one line of work a few years ago through a business partnership a boss of mine at the time struck up. (i don't have a million dollars sitting idle btw).

I spent a lot of time with a core group of about 5 or 6 of them and found them very pleasant, funny, hard working, humble people. I also noticed that they were incredibly secretive and there was a constant 'us and them' attitude from them. (understandable)

Shortly after I had left the company, the nice guys were all arrested for everything from dug running to prostitution and the head honcho fled the country....

It's possible that I had a bad experience....it's also possible, as I believe, that a LOT of Nigerians (not Africans) coming to this country are criminals and con men. It's easy to see why they would be considering the state of their country. (my Dad also lived there for 5 years btw)

I think it's important not to put political correctness ahead of common sense. I have no problem with immigration and I believe fully in integration but unless people entering this country from a currently corrupt, backward place are investigated and tackled when they are seen flouting the law, we will end up in a similar mess as their homeland.

Look it quite obvious to anyone with half a brain that anyone who isn't white is only smart enough to work in Centra or run 419 scams.

I mean that why you get so many people complaining about losing jobs and women to non-white folk, its quite obvious that if you have a career in Centra or the ability to plan a good 419 scam that you're going to be highly sought in the employment world.

I mean its not as if its all the scroungers and the wasters in crappy jobs that are complaining about their employment being underthreat from foreigners, don't you know its the doctors and lawyers and business men that sleep with one eye open. Personally I blame Centra, if they didn't have such an excellent career focus scheme and such good training, no white-people jobs would be at risk.

As for the women, well a recent cosmo survey says that girls are especially attracted to men wearing the colours of the Centra uniform. I say blame them for everything.

The sooner white people reclaim all those service level jobs, the sooner they can claim all their women back and return to the heady days of monoculturist inbreeding. PErsonally, it can't be soon enough for me.

Wait till you hear this - My Mother is a manager in he Health Board, and she was overseeing promotion of some kind of anti-racism week. She was telling me and my sister about how we should learn respect for foreigners, etc, etc, and that many of them are as honest and even more hard working then us.

Then my dad said how some expensive equipment had gone missing from his office.

Mother - Who was there?
Father - Well, there was the cleaner...
Mother - oh, thats strange...

Somehow gets mentioned the cleaner is nigerian.

As someone already said, yes Nigeria is a big country with a reasonably corrupt government, so taking this into account there are a lot of Nigerian criminals.

A friend of mine from Kenya, she said Africans hate Nigerians as they give them all a bad name (i.e. there does seem to be some truth that Nigeria has a few problems...)

That's a bit harsh on him, he is only making a point, or adding his opinion (even if his statistic is wrong).

I also work with Nigerians, never had any problems, but because you and i have had good experiences doesn't mean there are not bad experiences to be had. I don't think anyone believes or is saying that all Nigerians (bear in mind, Nigerian is not a race, but a nationality, so criticising Nigerians isn't really racist) are scammers, but people are wondering if there are a large proportion of them who are. I'm not going to voice an opinion on the matter, because I don't really have one - I don't know enough about Nigerian culture or scams...

I just think it's important that people have a right to question or to express an opinion, whether we agree with it or not, without being called idiots.

On a serious note though, IMO there have been a lot of scams related to nigerians, the most notable being the ATM scams. I have met some honest nigerians, some working as doctors, there just getting a bad name, the dishonest ones being nigerian knackers.

I have 4 friends from Nigeria the main thing other then cultural issues that stick out with me are the phones.

Dear lord, they all have at least 4 phones! They are also more likely to look the other way in regards to things that may not be above board but thats not just a Nigerian trait I'm sure.

eh, well it's both true and personal experience. i said a lot, not all because a lot, not all i have had dealings with did end up being criminals.

i think people are far too worried having a backbone on these issues and about being labelled racist when in some cases, there are people coming into this country from other countries which are very corrupt and uncivilised. i am disgusted by people being discriminated against beacuse of their sexual preferences, religion, colour of skin etc. but i think we have to face the fact that while you have to judge people on a case by case basis, it is not wrong to take extra precautions (police checks etc.) where statistically someone is more likely to be a crook.

...and yes this includes Nigeria.

btw. it's the same attitude of complacency which has immigrants entering our country (which again, i have no problem with) from areas with massive AIDS infection rates without mandatory HIV testing.......am i on my own here or wa?

Are you saying that people from a AIDS infected country, where AIDS is everywhere, that they should be tested to ensure they don't infect people here, and also so that we can treat them?

I'm saying that if someone coming to this country to hopefully live a full and prosperous life is not willing to submit to a criminal check and health exam then they shouldn't be allowed in.

I'm not suggesting that we turn people away because they have AIDS! If people coming from a country where even getting a test is difficult don't know they have the virus, how can they be treated, educated and take precautions!? common sense IMO

...and Syco, the last time i checked, people with AIDS weren't considered a race. i almost find that more offensive than racism.
