    Hello all,

Right I'm looking for information and locations for 'tailored' training footwear.

My current footwear are ok for weight training and the non-impact cardio I do, however, I have found that with running and/or elliptical runners the pain in my feet builds up and causes me to pause before anything else.

As mentioned, rowing/cycling no problem but for the above, the inadequacies of my footwear seem to show. At 110kg and 6ft 2" with a lengthy history in weight training, I never expect to be a long distance runner, however, I'm certain that part of the problems I'm experiencing at foot/ankle level are down to the footwear and poor support.

So, I remember Dave mentioned some place and I'm looking for suggestions on places where I can get decent advice and decent footwear. I.e. Not just a sales assistant in Champion sports!

    Cheers,

    JAK.

I was scouring these boards a while back looking for running shoes, and a few people recommended SportsWorld in Terenure.

Some of the Arrnots sales staff also know what they are talking about.

The best thing is to educate yourself first. Have a look at some running websites, such as runnersworld.co.uk, runnersworld.com, and runningtimes.com. These all have section that explain about the differnet types of feet / footstrike that people have, along with how different types of shoes are designed for different types of feet and different uses. If your going to be doing any serious running training it is well worth knowing exactly what type of shoe should ideally suit you. Also make sure that you get a shoe that fits you perfectly, both in size and width.

on http://www.asics.co.uk/ there is a shoe advisor (front page far right). Probably not as good as getting an actual person to advise you - but a start anyway

    Thanks folks.

Unfortunately for the Asics one I got ... "Please note that no recommended models are based on the personal profile you have created are found in our collection. For a personal consultation and demonstration please contact your ASICS specialist dealer. "

I remember at the boat show there was a guy selling some silicon arches for shoes that move with your foot and alledgedly "train and develop the foot more as you walk" - and sorted all sorts of problems. However, this was from a salesman and they cost 300 euro to have a pair custom made so I passed on it.

In the gym that I'm in (Jackie Skelly's, Parwest) about 6 months ago they had a couple of guys in that were analyzing your stride and the way your foot lands and recommending running shoes for anybody that was interested. They may have been sponsered by Asics IIRC but I'm sure if you give the gym a call they'll put you in contact with someone.
    Hope this helps.

From previous posts apparently Mick Dowling's shop in Terenure is the place to go - good advice and they'll recommend a shoe based looking at your old running shoes...

    Or try barefoot!

I know as a big guy you cant just wander into the local siopa to get sneaks so I wish you the best in your search!

If you do go with the Masai trainers can you let us know how you get on?
Especially with your previous injuries you mentioned in the other thread I'm sure we'd all like to know if they have a positive effect on your well being and recovery!
Also, if you would train wearing them or use them as an all day sort of rehab on their own?
Or are they total pseudo science and not worth bothering with?
Toying with the idea of a pair when my current Adidas wear out and I'd rather not spend the money with Nike or those :)

Will do, I'll go for a fitting and a test some day and if I believe what I see and they seem at least practical in the short term I will pick up a pair.

The Great Outdoors on Chatham St sell a similar product, whos name escapes me now. They get you to sit down while a machine analyzes your feet and then from the results gets you a custom pair of insoles.

they are called "Superfeet" , they stick the insole under the grill for a few minutes them fix it to your foot in a vaccum bag. I'm going to get a set done for my hiking boots. prices start at €70 and go up based on the type of insole you need.

There is a guy in Ballinasloe who makes insoles from imprints that he takes of your feet - dont know how much they cost, but friend of mine has been wearing them all her life due to fallen arches and wont go anywhere without them! His name is Tony Murphy, I think he is in Golden Pages (according to her...)
