now you've given other people the idea of buying loads, lessening the chance of you having the highest bid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

What is it, whoever has the most tokens wins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

i did not bother.. i think its something like collect the tokens, bid on a house and if you get the highest bid or something you get it free... dont know you might even get stuck having to buy the house or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,292 ✭✭✭gonker

something on myhome.ie register or something you get 10,000 points
cant really remember but check it out.
    gonk

collect the tokens and whoever has the most wins.... but ud have to be collecting from the start and collecting about 50 a day to be in with any sort of a chance....thats 50 evening heralds a day and even then there cud be others collecting even more....

if u do end up winning u still have to pay annual charges and other related costs, and if u draw with someone else, the most imaginative name for the house wins....

its probably a bit late to start collecting now given im over the 1,000,000 euro mark already....

Christ, with all the extra copies of the Herald they're going to be selling it's hardly a give-away is it? It's as good as selling the house to their readership and letting them scrap it out over who gets the keys.

What's the odds that one of the guys selling the Herald on the street wins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

Highly unlikely you have a million as most of the tokens have been worth 2,000 points and yesterday were 10,000. So unless you have a lot of friends who buy the Herald and have kept you the coupon or you have spent 100 Euro buying all of them yesterday, you would have spent 100 Euro so far.
    Not a clever idea.

    Sleepy
The coupon is attached to the back of the bar code so the sellers will not win it as they would have to buy the paper and take the coupon/bar code off.
They only get the money back from the Herald by returning the bar code.

Would be a help if somebody posts up the value of the tokens each day?

i took the oppurtunity yesterday to buy 500,000 euro worth of tokens and prior to that family and friends and work collegues have been collecting for me and that brought me over 500,000 so add the two together, now im over the million euro mark and still counting, with plans for a large purchase later in the competition......worth noting some of the tokens are worth 4,000 euro aswel... and ders the bonus 10,000 when u register with myhome.ie it all adds up!!

There's a syndicate on www.rollercoaster.ie on the discussion board there. i think under miscellaneous if anyone wants to join it, might be worth it if you don't think you have enought to win on your own......

How can they prove you are in a syndicate though and not just some lunatic who spends €20,000 on heralds, also if you had enough money (€20,000 for example) you could buy €200,000,000 worth of tokens from todays heralds, €40,000 for €400,000,000 worth of tokens, etc - surely thats a good investment for a €270,000 apartment or is there something I'm missing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

So that's who buys that desperate paper. You'd think they'd use this money and hire some sub-editors...

yeah but happens if someone spends €21000 that means you just lost €20,000. I dont mind losing if ive only invested a couple of hundred euro....but €20,000..no thanks!!!

At least if you don't win you'll be able to build some sort of rudimentary shelter out of all those Heralds you'll have in your possession, which will hopefully keep you dry until next years competition.

Yeah, because he's flaunting his tokens I've hired the remaining members of the A-Team and we're going to break into his house later and rob his tokens then distribute them to the homeless.

I work in a shop and have met someone who's spent €4000 on heralds, that's basically a huge gamble....

Who's willing to put up how much they've gathered. My girlfriend and I are just shy of 40 Million but I've a strong feeling people here will far surpass that.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 3,816 Mod ✭✭✭✭LFCFan

the last time they did this the winner had some rediculous amount (over a billion) which could only have been done through some sort of syndicate. Maybe that's why they've changed the rules this time to stop syndacates. Like someone said though, how do they prove it???

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 5,532 Mod ✭✭✭✭spockety

The problem is that no matter how ridiculous you think the amount you have is, someone else will have an amount even more ridiculous than you. No matter who you are.

The winner will present an amount which people will find completely absurd. And the winner will not be you, no matter who you are, or how many Herald's you have sourced.

Would tend to agree with this but it might turn out that the absurd amount could belong to someone here on boards and good luck to them. I was considering entering this comp but I don't have deep enough pockets!

Personally, I think the person that wins it will in some way be connected with the Herald and/or a newspaper distributor. The link won't be obvious of course, but I reckon it will be there in some shape or form.

A syndicate is not as risky as buying all those papers by yourself, you are spending so much money on papers and probably have no chance. Think about it!! if there are 5 or 6 people in a syndicate its more than likely you will have less than them put together. At least if your in a syndicate you have a better chance of getting a share. I really think if your going to spend all that money on papers it would be worth checking out the syndicate.

Well i have just over 90Million at the moment i was confidant i'd be in with a good chance but by the sounds of things the winning bid is gonna be around 150-200Million, i dont have that spending power..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 CaraNiTuathaill

LOL. How much have you actually spent on papers.

I heard that theres a major syndicate in Tallaght Hosp where lots of nurses got together to win.

I meant risky in the sense that who decides who gets what portion of the winnings....Do I get the same slice of the cake as the guy who gives 20 million euro worth of tokens if I only contribute 10,000 euro worth of tokens to the syndicate... You know what I mean, thing become very complicated and will just lead to heartache if you join a syndicate and that syndicate wins....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 CaraNiTuathaill

I dont know - It depends whether or not the syndicate was set up from the start with a target for each member to reach. Or whether they just pooled money each week to buy papers and one person was responsible to purchase papers... anyway if the money wasnt pooled it would be just done on a pro rata basis once everyone involved had counted their tokens. Obviously it wouldnt be fair to be one share per member if you had spent thousands and someone else had only spent hundreds...
I think the best way to win this comp. would be for 2 or 3 people who had tried to win on their own joined together at the very end to form a syndicate... Because realistically they could beat a syndicate. I reckon if you had between 80 and 120 million tokens you'd probably win...

Some interesting points being made but here are some facts to mull over.

These competitions that the Herald run, are done to SELL lots of copies of the paper and for no other reason.
They ALWAYS start with small valued tokens and ALWAYS finish with the highest denominations (so people will buy more and more copies of the paper).
The highest amount will always be the last day because they will sell the most number of papers that day. 100 tokens with a value of 10,000 is worth the same as 20 tokens with a face value of 50,000. So if you had spent 100 Euro buying the 10,000 tokens, somebody else could now get the same total for 20 Euro!
You have to buy the paper (bar code on other side) so somebody working in the Herald couldn't print them off as they would have to be bought. I think it might also state employees are not allowed enter.
The winner will not be one person but a consortium. This could range from 5 people to 50 people, the number of people doesn't matter just the AMOUNT! I

I predict the winning bid will be over 500 million!
This is equivilant to 10,000 papers at 50,000 token (or 10,000 Euro).
This would be a lot of ONE person but not for a consortium.
If you had 20 people at 1,000 Euro a person and only bought the papers on the last day (anybody who has done this before would know the highest amount was always on the last day), then you would accumulate this huge amount.

I was going to do this competition and had 20,000 Euro in cash from people
    who wanted to participate.
You might be able to afford to drop 1,000 yourself but not 20,000, that's why you get a consortium together. The apartment/duplex I reckoned after taking into account various costs etc, might be sold for 250,0000
So 20 people at 1,000=20,000 outlay.
Winner(?) then sell for 250,000 so each person get 12,500 Euro
    (includes original 1,000).
    Not a bad return.
The reason I was going for 20,000 was, very very unlikely any other consortium would match that amount so to "guarantee" winning it.
From the Heralds point of view it's HAPPY DAYS, they will have people/consortiums buying various amounts from say 500 Euro probably
up to at least 10k's worth.

For all the people that entered the competition, you will be delighted to hear I (and the rest) didn't enter it.
The only reason was having done this thing before and won a lot of stuff over the years, I couldn't guarantee myself getting my hands on enough copies of the paper.
20,000 copies of the Herald would be very hard to buy.
Most shops etc would sell you 20 copies of the paper without ringing alarm bells. So I would have had people buying papers all over Dublin city
and there was no point in buying say 10,000 copies as "you wouldn't be guaranteed" winning the competition. 20,000 however should have been enough (famous last words).
    One last word.
Bring the papers to the recycle places, you won't get charged!

    Hi,
I know this is probably in vain, but would anybody with a small amount of these tokens be willing to sell them, I am not a syndicate of any type i'm just a young fella who along with my girlfriend spent loads on buying papers and we bought them from the very beginning to the last day..
If anyone has a few lying around or has a couple of million, i'll gladly buy them from you..
Dont let a syndicate win this competition! :)

It depends on how much they are worth, But i guess EUR1 per 50K, or something similar, it would be negotiable of course depending on the amount...

Is there anyone out there with circa 40 million who wants to join as a syndicate. (More worth your while than selling them at least you have a greater chance of winning)
I was trying to win this on my own but reailsed I couldnt/
Trying to keep syndicate members down with high value of tokens so we get greater return (and hopefully all get deposit on house etc....)
Shares are on a pro rata basis....
A few members already - only looking for one or two more.....
    Let me know asap.
Need to draw up legal contracts.....
