Is it a laptop or a desktop? The next laptop should be this one, I'd say.

if it is that laptop, that sounds ****ing sweet!!

for 1200eurons that is the most bargain-tastic computer deal I've ever seen!!

I'm just pissed that I haven't got any spare cash, I got their laptop in September and its flying, no problems/issues whatsoever.

When you add all the important things like screen, keyboard etc it mounts up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭din0saur

Wireless keyboard & mouse are included as are headset with microphone and remote control.

A mail in coupon is included which can be redeemed for 1x 256MB memory stick, 1x webcam, 1x loudspeaker pair and 1x SCART cable.

There is no guarantee the same PC will go on sale in Ireland and if it does the price will almost certainly be more than €959,- although not that much...

there are alot of threads on the computer forum about ALDI stuff, although most of it doesnt look so good.

    Aldi System

Anyone any bad experience with ALDI/Medion PC

There are a good few more there if you search for them

Power supply seems to be a problem for a few people who bought them and the after sales service as well.

I wonder how noisey they run as well? This PC looks like exactly what I want but want something that will be quiet as well.

im unaware of this company Meldon ? but those experiences above dont look nice.
I got a gericom/advent from pc world (usually the make ALDI sells),, it was fast, good G card etc but soon after a month, the harddrive started to stop [computer would stall a ms every few minutes] , battery was also ****.

i think il may thousand more and get a dell.

    Hi Placebo,

Maybe I was wrong to just put up links to two negative threads about the ALDI/Medion PCs that people have bought in the past so here are a few more positive ones!

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=89183&highlight=Medion

    Aldi Special

also you can read more about the company at Medion

So anyone how has actually bought one before want to comment on their PC?

I bought that Ego laptop last November, cost me $1500 yo yo's and this will be my 2nd time bringing it back, the battery is narkered (might as well be a pc its pulged in for enough of the time . and it keeps shutting down for no reason, I cant say its over heating as it could shut down after 10 minutes and its not software related as it shuts down no matter what u are doing, I am actually bring it back this week once I have taken all my crap off it and I will be looking for a full refund because after 2 machines I have lost all hope with them.

I used to recommend them to all my friends and family because of what u get for the money. but for now on I think I will stick to companies that have been around for a while, I know u pay that little bit extra but you get a better service. and not to be told by the gericom help desk to stick a hover over your fans to help to clean out the fans.

I have same laptop, great piece of kit and it's in use 12hours+ each day.Sorry to hear you had problems with yours. One thing though, if you use the laptop with the mains plugged in a lot - make sure you remove the battery or it will decay in no time!

Hi I have purchased the last two Aldi Medion PC's.

The one I had before my current one was great, it had a few minor problems, but nothing major to worry about.

My current one (the last Aldi) PC has had some very annoying problems.

    1) Noisy, the CPU fan is extremely noisy, it is like having a hoover in your room when you do anything CPU intensive with it (games, DVD encrypting, etc.)

I'm actually going to fit a new fan tonight to try and improve it, I'll report back.

I notice that the new one only has a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor, mine had a 3.4GHz processor, I'd say they have put a slower processor in it to fix then noise/heat problems.

    2) The TV card has many artifacts and distortion problems on NTL cable, after weeks of complaining they came out and replaced, but I still have the same problems (looks like it might be software so).

Luckily I still have the TV card off my previous Medion PC and it works perfectly.

What I'm saying is that they are a great PC when they work, but they are a lot of trouble when they don't.

    Hope that helps.

If you read the advert properly you would see that it's the new 2MB Cache 3.2Ghz P4.Which provides a huge increase in performance (look at the Dothan Pentium M's with 2MB cache) over the older 1MB chip. :)

Ooops, forgot the most important bit (pardon the pun). It's 64ibt. :)

You are right, I only glanced at it and missed that.

However, to be compeletly picky, according to the benchmarks on anandtech here
the 550 (my 3.4GHz P4) actually beats the 640 (the CPU with this PC) in almost every benchmark.

You see while Dothan has a 2MB chip, it's cache latency has actually increased 17%, this pretty much offsets the advantage of the larger cache, from the Anandtech article:

"Unfortunately, most usage models that are a good fit for the 600 series are server and workstation workloads. Streaming data (using or encoding media), games, and most other consumer applications don't have the lots of big data requirement that can really separate the performance of the 1MB and 2MB parts."

So the extra 200 MHz actually has more impact on most consumer applications then the increased cache size.

However it is nice that it is 64bit, it would be nice to have it for Suse 64bit and once XP 64bit is released.

However personally I'll be waiting for Presler (or the AMD equivalent) the second generation dual core, 64bit processor from Intel due next year. That would make for a nice workstation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭carbsy

Ok Ok, maybe I jumped the gun a little without fully researching the benchmarks but it's a nice machine for the money and well worth it. :)

BTW, I have a 1.7Gz 2MB Dothan myself and it deffo performs on a par in most tasks with the higher clocked 3.2Gz P4 while running a lot cooler...

Assuming Xl memory is 1Gb thats not a bad PC , G card aint great but mid range of latest generation.

Anyone i told to get one of these before loves them , not a problem with and good value for money.

Placebo well worth it tbh, good speed out of the box and the sheer amount of extras make it a sweet deal.

I'll be upgrading from a P2, I think i'll settle on building my own rig in the summer. Wont need it till september anyway. If I do build my own rig I'll get exactly what I want. The crap medion support, noisy cases, lack of hardware info and unneseccary stuff like Dual TV Tuners DVB-s DVB-t average ram speed have made up my mind .... I dunno maybe im just too fussy.

Komplett is great for the DIY version (you can buy a built PC without an OS) but on the right day from the Dell outlet store you can do very well. Sort by price (ascending). I bought my most recent PC from Dell and a 19" monitor from Komplett = best of both worlds!

Seems like a very good deal to me.

If you can't be arsed building yourself and have 1.1k it's grand,
even if you did BYO you'd be hard pressed to do it on budget without OCing.

It seems to have a lot of multi-media gubbins, ie TV/radio capture; it has a nice GFX card, a good CPU(64bit too) it's basically grand, and if your upgrading from some P3/2 it'll seem like greased lightning!(Thats what my laptop seemed like anyway:))

Now NONE of these components are cutting edge, but they are up there, definitely way above average.

If I had the cash and needed a desktop, I'd probably get it.

Also you get a good warrenty and can always return it if you need to, Aldi are good like that.

I got their laptop(and Ext. HD) last year and the thing is deadly, I do Audio/video/gaming/wifi/network/design shenanigans on it all the time!

There has been one problem; the trackpad died about a month after I got it.

One quick call to their (Gericom's)customer service and I was told it was a driver issue, given the URL of the update and ten minutes later all's well!

I'm very happy with my experience with them, and while I've heard a bit about bad service/computers, I can count them all on my left hand. And when you consider that they sell about a quarter of a million of each computer when they do them, that's not too shabby.
