Ive been getting really addicted to youthanasia recently , its a brilliant album , but i think all in all im more of a metallica person , just rather their music :)

I dunno, i consider them to be equally good in some ways, but the most important thing is, metallica after the black album (maybe even load) is not worth considering, while megadeth have some sort of consistency and dont sound like they have run out of steam.

But i consider megadeth to have 2 classic albums, while metallica would have 3. Metallica have Kill Em All, Master Of Puppets and take a pick from RTL, AJFA and the black album, while megadeth have Peace Sells and Rust In Peace. Im not saying the rest of their stuff is rubbish; its good, but not brilliant. IMO of course.

I do like Megadeth, but in the case of them and Metallica, Megadeth have a handfull of good songs IMO but Metallica have much more!

Not quite true. Metallica have more albums that are awful than Megadeth (So Far... So Good... So What).

So Far... So Good... So What? was a decent album I thought...

    Megadeth.
I have seen both about 4 times and megadeth has always been more fun.
Plus the Metallica corporation kinda killed the love I had for Metallica

Metallica have more good songs. They're both good though.

Hmmmm....doesn't matter really they are pretty similar depnds whether you're comparing their whole music catalogues or just what's good about them.

Yea i agree with trigger here , megadeth do have some excellent songs , but on the whole i think metallica have way more , like if i was going on a long journey and had to choose between a metallica album or a megadeth album , id choose metallica every time.

    eh...MEGADETH...tbh

    Megadeth
I think Metallica probably have the better drummer but Megadeth have the best riffs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,151 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

I like them both equally. The whole sell out thing doesnt take up my every living moment when listening to any group unlike some ;)

Metallica are better in my opinion.

    yeah....'sell out'

No way... Ulrich is probably one of the most average drummers out there.

    He has a point though...

Mustaine writes the music, Metallica rips it off.

Not quite true. Metallica have more albums that are awful than Megadeth (So Far... So Good... So What).

So Far, So Good is a ****ing great album - Into The Lungs Of Hell, Set The World Afire, Liar, In My Darkest Hour, etc Are these awful songs?

    I think not.

Megadeth do have one album that truly sucks ball and it goes by the name of Risk. That particular piece of shyte has no redeeming features and it stands shoulder to shoulder with Metallica's worst.

To sum up both bands, initially four legendary albums each, then they both veered towards commerciality and Metallica never made it back. Megadeth redeemed themselves IMO, Metallica R.I.P.

True. Oh, and megadeth are generally better musicians IMO.

Megadeth have some brilliant songs but Metallica have great songs(nothing else matters eetc...)

I've yet to hear a megadeth song that had the wow factor for me yet! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

heh I like Risk. I'm sure it'd probably have been more popular under a different band name.

And haha, even Chuck Behler is better than Ulrich, and he was Deths worst drummer :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Chuck was actually a ****ing great drummer, I had the privelege of seeing him play live, the man was no slouch. The problem was Paul Lani, the producer, had him play the drums separately from the cymbals on So Far, So Good, So What, so it would record cleaner. That's a totally unnatural thing for a drummer to do, imagine being told to play the guitar one string at a time. The end result is a cleaner drum sound but totally devoid of spontenaity and all the good things a live drummer brings to a record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

I retract my comment so :) I never saw them live back then.

I'd probably say Metallica but only just.

its simple Megadeth rock metallica were great untill they became money grabbing comercial idiots basically the release of the black album was the end of metallica

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭derrylahan

yous are obviously deciding which is da best thrash metal band after slayer, cause slayer are far better then metallica or megadeth.

i'd say metallica but then again i havent heard much of megadeth, and then again i dont really like metallica...... funny innit

    Yeah, you're right...if there's one thing that a multi-millionare wants/needs, it's more money.

    Metallica didn't rip off Mustaine.
If they did, I imagine he would have sued.
Hence why they changed all of 'his' songs enough so that he couldn't claim them...and hence, he couldn't sue them.

Anyway...what does it really matter which is better? This way, we get two great bands instead of just one.

    They did.
Why didn't Queen/Bowie sue Vanilla Ice? Did he not rip Queen off? I think so.
Metallica is just Hetfield karaoking what should be Megadeth's songs. Simple as.

I distinctly remember seeing a live Metallica when dave mustaine was with them and the solo's he played to the songs of Kill em all where very different to the solo's on the album!......And i must say, Mustaines solo's were worse!

Was like, just throw any note in there!

I like Megadeth, but IMO they never held a candle to Metallica!

    I'm with Metallica!

I'm not talking about solos here. And whether you think Mustaine's solos were worse or not doesn't hold any bearing here. That is an opinion, not a fact. Was Kill Em All's solos not, "just throw any note in there" anyway?

Again whether you like Metallica over Megadeth, or vice-versa. It is an opinion. But you cannot get away from the fact that Metallica ripped off some of Mustaine's stuff.

What exactly did they rip off from him? His contribution to Kill em all?
If you look at the album you will actually see that they mention his name in the songs he helped write!I dont see proof that Metallica ripped off Mustaine at all to be honest!

Boils down to this, Megadeth have some absolutely cracking songs, I mean they rate with the best of Metallica's.....but thats it, they are to few and far between!Metallica have far more 'Great' Songs and thats my opinion! Not something im putting down as fact!

His contribution to alot of songs that Metallica wrote in their early years I think 8 in total, which is quite an amount. Which is nearly half of their songs in total for the first two albums.

I don't see any proof that Metallica didn't rip off Mustaine. What I do see is that Mustaine contributed to alot of what Metallica released in their earlier days (it says so in the credits), and the early albums even sound alot like some of Mustaine's stuff with Megadeth.

There is no denying that since Metallica have lost the influence of Burton and Mustaine, Metallica have been very very poor. Is that a coincidence?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭Spalk0

Yes but agin, Mustaine got his mention in the songs!Ripping him off is way off the mark!
And saying alot of Metallica's early stuff sounds like Megadeth can be said the other way round!A lot of Megadeths early stuff sounds a lot like Metallicas!Plus, the names of the 2 bands are similar, Metallica were defineately there first! So theres more inclination there that Megadeth are 'ripping off' Metallica to put it in your words! But i dont believe Megadeth ripped them off, its just to make the point!
As to say they went very very poor after Mustaine and Burton, well, thats a matter of opinion aint it?Some people will disagree with you and some will agree!
And the fact that you dont see any proof that they didnt rip off mustaine!Doesnt work that way!Ever hear of Innocent till proven guilty!?In order for your claim to be taken seriously you first have to prove they did!
the 'proof' you have is basically what you want to believe!

"Ah, theres your wee mention Mustaine. Thanks for making us more famous than you are. We wish we could write a few songs for you but we can't. We haven't got Cliff Burton here so we've lost all of our musical knowledge and creativity."

I'm saying that alot of Metallica's early stuff sounded alot like Mustaine's stuff because that was Mustaine's style. He's always had it like that. Take Metal Militia for example, did Metallica write anything like that after Mustaine was out of the band? Coincidence? I mean I don't find Master of Puppets remotely similar to any of Megadeth's stuff. As for the names, I know you were making a point but your having a laugh. They're nothing alike.

Musically they did go very very poor after Mustaine and Burton. Kirk Hammett was always over reliant on the wah pedal to seal over the cracks in his solos and he has been playing more or less the same scale for the last ten years. Without Burton their musical complexity has disappeared, they are now playing pop songs for teenagers who have just grown out of listening to Britney Spears, which should tell its own story.

I don't have any proof, but I know what I'm hearing when I listen to Kill Em All, and it is Mustaine's music. Same way as when I listen to "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice, I hear Queen and Bowies "Under Pressure". Then again there is no "evidence" of that either is there?

Yes but what does it matter that Kill Em All was influenced by Mustaine when their next three (non-Mustaine influenced) albums were better?(ok apart from a couple of tracks on RTL)

I fail to see what the last part has to do with anything being discussed but hey, who am I to judge? I have to say though, if it boils down to musical talent then Megadeth are going to piss all over it. Cliff Burton was the only one of them with real talent. Since he died they lost a lot of musical cohesion. Megadeth have always had a lot more talent behind their songwriting. You can't even begin to compare Kirk Hammett and Marty Friedman for instance. Anyone who does has clearly never heard either.

My point was that Metallica would never had made it but for Mustaine and Burton.

Megadeth appeal to me more for heavy sounds.
But for those epic-solo songs, I'll go with Metallica.

Overall I'd have to say Metallica appeal to me more in general. But Megadeth definitely take the stage if I'm pissed off.

Well like what devious said, The subsequent albums to Kill em all were far better and Mustaine didnt write them!

As for Burton, he was talented allright but to say the others(bar Lars Ulrich) wouldnt have made it without them is stupid really!

He wrote two songs (out of 8) on Ride the Lightning, the self title and I would say part of Call of Kthulu. He also wrote part of Leper Messiah, which he was not credited for. To say they are "far better" than Kill Em All is wrong, and is only an opinion. They sold more yes, but you can't say they were better.

Who is to say they would have? If Mustaine hadn't given his input to Metallica for Kill Em All, they wouldn't have had an album. Kill Em All was a huge stepping stone to fame for Metallica, who knows what might have happened if it wasn't released.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭Spalk0

It aint wrong, In my opinion Ride the Lightening, Master of Puppets, and Justice for all and Black are all better than Kill em all!

What do you mean who's to say they would have? They bloody well did!Its you who wants to believe they were only Mustaine and Burton, when, in fact theyve gotten bigger since them! Not release Killem allKLook, mustaine only co wrote some of those songs!Do you have actual proof he wrote most of it? or the best of it? NO!For all you know he probably only wrote those god awfull solo's i heard that were changed for the actual album!Your going on what you believe to be actual fact!Your actual proof is "oh, well it sounds like it was written by mustaine!"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Calm down. Mustaine did write the vast majority of the songs he's credited for. That includes pretty much all of the Four Horsemen (all they did was change his lyrics after they kicked him out) and others. I wouldn't rag on the other three though, they've written some ****ing amazing songs without Mustaine or Burton, even while they were in the band.
