And I'll concur with that. It is lower than the 250m I mentioned, perhaps 180m

Valentia is still at 8C, with Cork Airport at 1C

Showers in the SE. Wind is now NE nearly everywhere.

ive looked at more charts and it looks like getting alot colder from tonight till thursday then milder again for the weekend but still cold, however from tuesday 3rd march there seems to be really bitterly cold weather from sweden heading its way back here with blues and purple colours not far off? could this be another cold snap in the making to give us proper snow during first week or two of march? http://www2.wetter3.de/animation.html

weathercheck, that shower your talking about, any chance of that hitting meath or am i do far north?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,732 ✭✭✭✭Villain

Cold in Carlow, wishing and hoping that a few showers will this far inland, oh how I would love to wake to a carpet of snow.

Weathercheck, at this stage maybe you could give us the overall outlook for the next 3 days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

    O.K i'll give it a go..

Showers affecting eastern areas through this evening and tonight
leaving 2-3cm's of snow in some areas.
Tuesday will see more snow showers affecting the east through
the day perking up in the morning and spreading further inland.
Wednesday looks likely to be the snowiest day early morning
a band of snow will push in from the east and cross the country.
Later in the day another trough will affect the east.

Overall eastern coounties could have upto 10cm's lying on Wednesday
although if the sun comes out a rapid thaw will commence. :)

More later when i watch this vicious looking shower..

Gonzo it's heading for Dublin possibly south meath but probably not.

It could land anywhere between south Meath and north Wicklow :)

It could land anywhere between south Meath and north Wicklow :)

If thats the one half way between the isle of man and anglesea, its going for north Dublin and into meath then.

By the way , the proper cold air still isnt here yet.
The temp at the m2 buoy is up at 5.4c with a sea temp of 8.4 but with a dew point now of -0.5 c

Basically its a tad on the warm side out there for snow at the moment.

What is the chance of good fall of snow for mullingar during the rest of the week thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,362 ✭✭✭Trotter

Yep.. same here Leonard (Superquinn Area).
I was surprised how heavy the snow showers were today, and equally as surprised at how quick it melted!!

At last .. Waterford and Snow in the same sentence. Something to tell the Grandchildren in 2030 when its 30degrees all the time lol

I challenge Earthman and Weathercheck to give us complete met wannabees a quicky guide to what websites to look at and how to do the basic interpretations of how to see what weather is on the way!! (Probably like me saying.. tell me the gist of science!!) ..but lets see :)

By the way.. Snow in Waterford has now turned to hail.. as its batterin down my chimney and landing in the living room lol

Have to say I was indeed suprised by the 12z ensembles, it looks likely to last until Saturday at least now and tbh that F.I anyhow so the breakdown is by no means certain.
Would be great if some properly cold air arrived, this morning was a little dissappointing but not unexpected in terms of stuff lying, that said I'd bet money that on Wednesday even at sea leval there may be some snow settling early and late at sea level, with a thaw inbetween abeit not as quick as there was today in areas that had it lying.
All in all, its the kind of weather that keeps an armchair meteorologist like me happy .
I'll be going hiking in the mountains one way or another this weekend camera at the ready !!

Interesting change in the tafs...(seems like an possible upgrade in heavyness of the showers later)...though bar the one shower weathercheck has mentioned earlier, i dont see any sign of that.

If anyone wants to learn how to read Metars and Tafs (weather reports and forcasts) , I would recommend this excellant site.

Irish Stations that you might be interested in looking up the latest Metars And Tafs
include (use the four letter abbreviation in the search box ..eg "eidw" for Dublin Airport)...

    CORK ARPT/CORCAI EICK
    DUBLIN AIRPORT EIDW
    CONNAUGHT APT EIKN
    SHANNON AIRPORT EINN

So lets have a look at the current Taf for Dublin Airport issued at 18:00 this evening....

EIDW 211800Z 211904 05012KT 9999 SCT020 >> Beween 19:00 and 04:00 tonight, winds are expected to be northeasterly at about 12 Knots , Visibility is unlimited, and scattered clouds at 2000 feet

TEMPO 1904 07015G26KT 4000 -SHSN SCT005 BKN016CB >> Temporary forcast for beween 19:00 and 04:00 specifically, winds are expected to have a more east-north-east component, averaging 15Knots but gusting in light snow showers to 26Knots, during snow showers visibility will drop to about 4000 meters, cloud cover during this time frame is scattered at 500 feet , there is Cumulonimbus (anvil shaped showerclouds ..can be heavy precipitation sometimes) covering a lot of the sky at 1600 feet.

    PROB30
TEMPO 1904 2000 SHSN SHGS BKN005 BKN012CB >> There is a reasonable probability (probabilites only go to 40 before having their own line as above) that between 1900 - 04:00 , visibility will drop to 2000 meters and the showers will be moderate in intensity, they may be of snow or of small hail, almost overcast at low levals (500 feet) and similarily at 1200 feet where will be lower Cumulonimbus clouds (lower CD clouds means lower dew point and often means heavier snow for our consideration in this type of weather.

I hope this info was useful to you guys..so go out and read the Metars and Tafs and get the most up to date forecast you can find !!!

    Edit:Fixed metar url.
