    hi flex,

Theres not alot you can do about your war scars im afraid. The reason is that the scarring is actually underneath the upper surface of the skin and its not easy to repair. You may find some products on the market although im not sure how effective they are. I know theres one product called "Bio"...something. You could try this.

Stretch marks usually fade from red to white over time making them harder to see, so hang in there. Ive read that if you can apply vitamin E oil to the skin it might keep them at bay. Good luck.

Cheers kazzer.Im 20 now but have had some for over 2 years which are well faded but still visible.I have some "newer" ones too.I know all about them and were they are.Theres some stuff called Retina-A.Its prescription.Ever heard of it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

Yes Ive heard of that Retin-A, which is supposed to be good. Im not sure if its effective for the treatment or prevention of stretch marks. Its only available on prescription is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭Flex

Yeah prescriotion only I was told.Is the stuff you were talking about called Bio Oil. I go t some about 2 weeks ago.Someone told me Retina-A was good but supposedly quite expensive(yippee!), on an American forum.Anyway the Bio Oil hasnt made adent yet, but still tryin. Do ya know does a tan make your s'marks more prominent?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

Hmmm not sure, I would have thought a tan would conceal them. Would you consider trying a fake tan to see what it looks like.

And yes that stuff Bio Oil, I remember hearing about it. No luck yet no?

    .

I dont know about that! A fake tan would be like applying makeup which probably wouldnt be similar to actually tanning.Because s'marks are a scar tissue and are sub-dermal, they may not tan very much or even tan at all.

No not yet mate. But like I was sayin I dont fell embarassed by em, just prefer if they were gone.My left pec/inner bicep have been hit quite bad.

What about yourself.Any experience in this area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

Yeah I have them in similar areas, upper arms, pits. Also have some large ones on my back which I got during a growth spurt when I was young. Theres alot of people with them out there. I have never really tried anything for them, I suppose its because the treatments are quite expensive (over time)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭Flex

Yeah same here. Thanks for all the info kazzer.

I know that if you get a tan (dont know bout fake tan) that it makes the stretch marks more noticeable -as the skin gets darker the stretch marks stay the same colour so they'll look whiter

Well based on 10 years proper training since I left school, mine appeared between the front of my shoulder and chest about 2 years in. Gradually grew longer and longer. I remember when they first appeared and then started lengthening I was a bit concerned. One or two small 'tears' also showed around biceps. It was something which many people associated with juicers and hence I was not exactly thrilled with their appearance.

Anyhow, they fade down over time I found. 8 years since then there is no trace of scarring on bicep, and the shoulder/chest ones have faded considerably. Still noticeable I suppose, but without the redness barely.

    JAK.

    Question:

Do they only appear when you gain mass (muscle or fat) too fast?

    How fast is too fast?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,284 ✭✭✭pwd

They appear when the skin is stretched during a period of fast growth. Girls can have them on their boobs. Tall guys might have them on the sides of their knees.

I only have them around my armpit area.My right side is practically untouched but for some reason my left pec/inner bicep and that tie-in area are in bad order.I also have a "long" one on my front left shoulder aswel, so I know how annoying those ones are too.Has anyone else ever heard of this Retina-A stuff?I was told its great for stretchmarks if ya use it while theyre still redish/new and can also make existing ones a bit smaller and less prominent. But itd be dear getting it, so does anyone know if itd be worth the cash?

Girls also get them around their hip-area during puberty and also during pregnancy.

According to Gillian McKeith in 'You are what you eat', strechmarks are caused by weight gain and weghtloss. They appear on abdomen, underarms and other areas. They fade from red to white but never totally go. She does give some advice on how to help them fade. They can be aggravated by a deficiency in zinc, and so taking a supplement of 15-30mg per day as well as vitamin e can help. She also gives the recepie for a special 'edible' cream including avocadoes to put on the area for 30mins per day. Although this might be impractical. Let me know if u want me to post it.

I got a cream in boots. Its a coca butter thing. Its specifically designed for stretch marks after weight-loss or pregnancy. There is two versions. Ill look up the exact name tonight.
Anyway, i applied it twice daily to my strech marks, and i saw a noticable improvement in the color of my stretch marks. They definatly faded more. Now mine would of been more white than purple at that stage anyway, but now there barely noticeable.

Eh ok..........I said that because a lot of women who are well endowed have stretchmarks because of it. Stretchmarks have nothing to do with being fat. They occur from the skin being streched in a time of growth, which can include weight gain or loss, but doesn't necessarily.

Well, they are unsightly to me.

Are they white or reddish? i find a tan hides them and sun helps them go white. They fade with time and no one sees them in everyday life so i would'nt let them depress you.

I originally posted this thread and since then Iv got more stretchmarks! Have lots of them from weightlifting; both sides of my chest, the full lenght of both my biceps, both my lats are covered in them and my shoulders too. Dont care about them, theyve faded alot too anyway. I used to used bio-oil and cocoa butter on them, didnt help them fade or get smaller, but it prevented new ones.

To those of you who have stretch marks, is it due to gaining muscle mass too suddenly? If so, what kind of gains resulted in these marks?... if it is possible to quantify.

I started to get them after gaining around 2 stone of mainly muscle between ages 16-18. My arms went up a few inches and started noticing stretch marks at junction of bicep and pecs. Faded a lot but still visable if look closely. If your just lifting for fitness/definition then you wont get them, its only with rapid muscle or fat gain ,not everyone will get them ,depends on your genes etc.

No need to explain stretchmarks to me, I wasn't trying to take the piss out of your posts. I just like tits.

The reason I have stretch marks is because I lost 6'5 stone last year, so basically from my waist to my arm pit is stretch marks, along with my biceps and triceps.

I have never once thought twice about them really. I know why I have them and to me they are a good thing because I think of what I was like without them, ie: 23 stone.

    Hey, Papillon87, sorry for delay.
That cream is Palmers cocoa butter formula, firming butter.
As I said, there are two of them. I got the one for use after weight loss and pregnancy. Now it won't firm your skin, or get rid of cellulite, but it will help stretch marks fade.

It costs about €6 in Boots.
