    I just did it.

2 Mins.. Could have went longer.

You have to pinch your nose and close your mouth.

11 minutes - the trick is to keep breathing... no, I mean the trick is to keep going when you think you can't, just relax, you'll feel link you're falling asleep and then you can do it for aaaaages. Go on, try it.

Get your lung capacity measured. Much more accurate.
    Mines 6.46litres.
    Beat that!!

    Lung capacity 7.3 liter

    7.3 litres?
Not that i doubt you or anything but Miguel Indurain had some the biggest lungs ever recorded in recent times and they were 8 litres.
Anything over 6 and you'd be comparable to an athlete

I have the worst lungs in the world. I think the Doctor said it's about 30% below average. I can hold my breath pretty long though.

    Shrimp,
I hear some people find it easier to hold their breath when they have a plastic bag over their head.

Disclaimer, for the people that are inevitably going to moan at me for that, it's a joke, okay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭Spunog UIE

there was some stunt show before and all the smokers on it lasted way longer than non smokers. They joked it was probally due to them being used to having limited oxgen.

I'd never trust anyone saying they can hold their breath for xxxxxxx time unless their head is submerged in water or something, too easy for them to breath unnoticed even to them selves, even a little time bit slipping in.

The trick is to keep slowly exhaling in small amounts, that way I can last over 2 minutes. Thats longer than thom yorke in the no surprises video, im so proud of myself!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

No, I find go for as long as you can.. then slowly exhale bit by bit when you feel you need a relief.

Contrary to popular belief, breathing or at least the reflex to breathe is controlled not by the level of oxygen in the lungs, but the level of carbon dioxide.
If you want to hold your breath for a long time, take a rapid series of short sharp breaths (4-5 will suffice) (not too many, you don't want to hyperventilate and pass out), fill your lungs and relax. Limit your movement absolutely. The more you move - the more energy you consume, the more CO2 is produced, and the more you'll feel the need to breathe, so sit still. Relax. Relax. Think of something else. Relax. When the need gets too much, slowly slowly exhale. (you'll get another 10-20 seconds). Then - breathe.

FYI: I'm a PADI qualified DiveMaster and we use this technique for skin diving.

With techniques similar to what Zulu was outlining I can get to about 3 mins. My own personal best(done for a bet, face submerged in water) was 3.16, but that was hard. Nearly passed out. Smoker here too. My dad in his 80's could hold his for well over a minute so maybe it's a genetic thing.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I probably could have gone longer, but I'm still a bit full after lunch, I think that has an effect on it. I would like to think I can hold my breath longer, as I do excercise a good bit.

I'd say the more you do it, the better you get aswell. I can't remember the last time I actually had to hold my breath for anything

I'm assuming you me - how long can you survive without oxegen*: no oxegen to the brain is very dangerous. Irreversable brain damage can occur after 3 mins - but everybody is different. Generally - if you're gone for over 5 mins, you're in big, BIG trouble. (Like dead)

*You can die from drowning after being rescued from the water, resuccatated and on dry land. The lungs need to be cleared properly.

    No it's not, it's informative.

Personally I can hold my breath for 3 mins plus but only if I hyperventilate first.

    A good 10 minutes.

I also have a six inch prehensile tongue, girls.

Eventually built up to being able to hold my breath for 3 minutes during a lifesaving course i did a few years ago.

    This is a tricky one.

Pernament brain damage occurs after four minutes without oxygen to the brain, however that's not the same as holding your breath for 4 minutes, as your body doesn't use up all the oxygen in one go, so it really depends on your lung capacity and physical fitness (the fitter you are, the less oxygen you use up).

But I really think it's just more of a physcological thing. Some people find it very hard to say no to that burning feeling in their lungs.

Can't say in minutes, but I can swim at least 25 meters underwater on one breath. It's the only real way to test yourself.

it's a hel;l of a loy harder to hold it underwater i averaged 2.5+ mins outta water but in my scuba test i struggled after a mere 30 seconds

the trick is to breath really fast then the lungs will need more oxygen so you will have the ability to take one huge deep breath before going in. try it it works
