Mixed views? I've never heard of anyone who didn't think they were brilliant live.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 729 ✭✭✭crazy angel

yea a lot of people said the sound was terrible

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭herobear

that would depend on the venue mostly tbh...

im going to(ambassador right ?), im not that familiar with their stuff, but they sound alright, worth checking out anyhow

I'd go purely to see the Ambassador's security shít themselves in front of a Murphys crowd. I'd be goin if I wasnt skint :(

seen em in the village, great show crap sound..... saw them in tbmc great show better sound and both times security couldnt do a thing which while on one hand is brilliant on the other its quite worrying.

however im really looking forward to sunday night id say the sound will be alot better in the ambassador however it does remain to be seen how security will handle the crowd and the almost must happen invasion of the stage at the end of the show......... you kids better watch out!

Saw them in the village and thought they were great (especially because I was sitting backstage with them after the gig). The sound could of been better but I dont think that bothered too many people that much.

Also saw them in the TBMC which was also great. I know what people are saying about secuirity not being able to do anything, people were climbing up on the stage and generally just going a little crazy. But I think thats the idea for a band like the dropkicks.

Seeing them next week aswell... cant wait. Much drinking and fun will be had :D:D

The TBMC gig was brilliant. No bouncers, no barrier, No MCD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,516 ✭✭✭E@gle.

yeah im going i heard the crowd in the village were fairly wild. at one point there were so many people on the stage the band had to play standing on there amps.

    there's always one^^

Hadn't heard they were playing. Might look for some tickets. How mad a crowd do they usually pull?

they pull loads of mad **** with flicknives and hatchets down their bags.

Yeah - was considering seeing them in Belfast, but then I figured it would be full of IRA types. It's got to be either Dublin or Boston then - Boston being better but considerably more expensive.

Some of my friends are huge DKM fans and go over to Boston every year to see their Paddy's weekend gigs. I decided to go with them last year. I was only really interested in going on Holiday and wasn't too bothered about going to the gig. But I'm so glad that I did go. They were absolutely amazing. I was fairly amazed at the mixed crowd that were at their shows.

Part of their stage act is to allow anyone that wants to get up on stage with the band for a couple of songs which is deadly. Really adds to the buzz.

I've got my ticket for Sunday and can't wait, at least I won't be jet lagged this time!!!

Dropkicks are an amazingly fun band to be at their gig. First thing I'm gonna do when I leave school is find out when their next Boston gig is and go. :)

that was an excellent gig. the stage was tiny they were on the shoulders of the crowd on the stage playing!!
thought the athmosphere was better there than tbmc

    Pretty good gig.

Not as good as I was led to believe, but if I saw them without any expectations I'd be impressed.

Not as good as I was led to believe
I'm afraid those were my misleadings. Though I thought they were justified. Quality gig. Fairytale Of New York was an unexpected bonus. Love that song. Bouncing Souls also brilliant. Would like to have heard Fight To Live or '87 though. God Awfuls were good. But still not making much of an impression on me.

Bouncers... well... what does one expect...?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

From the Ambassador's usual level of brutality, not much. Were they strict on circle pits and stuff?

For the Boucing Souls and God Awfuls they were. Flashing lights and seperating people. Actually now I think about it some of the boucers used a bit too much force on certain people, pushing and shoving them etc.. Making the pits worse rather than safer.

For the Dropkicks they didn't really have any control over anything, nor did they try to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

During the Bouncing Souls they were the worst I've ever seen bouncers be. Very close to just hitting people. Pushing very voilently. Grabbing people by the neck etc. People tried to complain to them. Bouncers listened for about 4 - 5 seconds before just pushing them away and telling them to **** off. One particular bouncer was just picking fights, and bullying people. When Dropkicks came on they really couldn't do anything. By the end the stage was full of people.

I'm sick of hearing about this, What can be done?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

www.mcd.ie Email them, phone them. someone needs to bring in some kind of camcorder and record them acting up and send it to the guards too. i rarely go to MCD gigs to be honest so it doesnt really bother me. But if you dont tell them they aint gonna do anything.

    gar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

I thought the bouncers were grand actually - they didn't really do much, but were pretty much as expected.

The gig was pretty good, they can surely get the crowd up into high gear - but they didn't really keep going there quickly enough - too much slow stuff, should have just plowed on.

Some great tracks though - the dirty glass was particularly good, but I was really disappointed by Fairytale of New York - it was a pretty ****ty cover.

Well worth the money though - no question!

My mate had his camera taken off him at the Green Day gig in the Ambassador, which I guess was fair enough considering they weren't allowed (not that I agree with this but thats off the point).

But the security wouldnt let him put his name on it or wouldn't tell him where to claim it after the gig, and we got out straight after the band finished and they basically had a bin full of the cameras they had confiscated and they just emptied it out on the floor in the lobby.

Everyone was grappling for their camera's, it was a free-for-all and anyone could claim any camera.

Luckily my friend got his but I know of at least two people who didn't.

Bouncers, in general, in my opinion, are scum.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Whatever about "in general", the Ambassador's security are nothing but a crowd of completel thugs. There is little to no level of professionalism. You move sideways and you're done. I saw about 5 of them take this guy out at Greenday who couldnt have been more than 5' 5".

I've been at a serious amount of metal/punk shows and I've never once seen anyone get seriously injured in a circle pit. People tak care of one another in them. THe only time anyone has been man handled or deliberately attacked is when the security arrive to "take care" of people.

It's an absolute disgrace that this kind of crap goes by without a moment of thought from MCD for the paying customers. Of course they know exactly what goes on at these gigs, and I'm sure they're more than happy to walk off, cash in hand in the safe knowledge that the more excitable members of the crowd are now in bits outside the venue. Complain, but will it do anything? The nice, idealistic, option would be to avoid MCD gigs like the plague, but it seems that their grapple hold on the bigger venues around Dublin and the fat pay cheques is holding the upper hand on some of these "punk" bands.

I didn't see one bouncer at the NOFX gig in the redbox, apart from those taking tickets on the door, and it was definitely one of the best gigs in recent years.

I reckon mailing the bands about this kind of crap would help sway them to other promoters (**ahem** TOXIC **ahem**)

Yeah. DOWN WITH THE SYSTEN!!!! YEAH!!!!

Apologies for the hatred powered rambling ;)

Some good points, maybe someone with time and initiative could set up a group of people to bombard groups with e-mails to boycott the bad security firms and ticketmaster, although I'm far too lazy/stupid to get the whole thing moving.

To be fair to ticketmaster (concerning the current topic), do they have any input in the choice of security firm hired for concerts? Fair enough they enjoy hiking prices on tickets, but that's a seperate matter.

Many emails, petitions etc. to MCD and the venues complaining might achieve something. So might having a video of what goes on there. Anyone know if the numbers the bouncers wear is specifically their number? Giving 1 or 2 of these numbers in an email would surely be more productive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

I thought the idea of everyone bringing their own flashlights to gigs, and any boucer who acts out of order, just shine all of them in his face was quite good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,117 ✭✭✭✭MrJoeSoap

Thatd probably just infuriate the fcukers even more.

Sorry dregin, I was just trying to kill two birds with the one stone if you get my drift?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭herobear

other than blocking my view of the stage for parts of the support bands sets, i didnt have much problem with them, at least they did fa during the murphys set

i really liked the god awfuls, thought the souls had great stage presence(was talking to their guitarist after) and the murphys were excellent, i had a fun night definitely

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 111 ✭✭shivface

yea, i didnt have any probs with them. one of them practically lifted me onto the stage after

i thought the bouncer's were strict for the 1st 2 bands but when the dropkicks came on they could not do anything.
One of the bouncers actually stepped out of his way to let me up on stage.

Anyway it was one of the best gigs i was ever at defiently going to see them again. :D:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 466 ✭✭Caoimhe

Hmmm. There's a lot of bouncers out there who are right bastards but I've come across a lot who are dead on as well. Had one who basically raided the stage just for me and my friends after a show to give us stuff. So they're just like in any other profession. Some bastards, some good guys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,516 ✭✭✭E@gle.

at the end of the day they are just trying to do there job. but i agree some can be pr!cks.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

I'm not saying they're all bad. My experience of those in the Ambassador has always been a negative one though.

Gah! Just thought I'd update that - was at the Dropkick in Boston last night and it was absolutely shyte!

They did a few tracks very well, but the crowd was crap and a lot of it was just covers of things like "Amazing Grace" with guitars. And the crowd was crap. Really crap. Gig in Dublin was far far better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

It was Cait O'Riordan from the Pogues that was on stage murdering Fairytale of New York.
