    Someone asked this recently.
    1. Proper stretching every day (even if running or not)
    2. YOU MUST STOP RUNNING UNTIL THE PAIN GOES

If you don't do 2, you could injure yourself. Mostly shinsplints come if you start doing too much too soon.

What type of routine do you have?

I started back running about a couple of years back and suffered terribly with them. Apparently the only way to get rid of them is to build up the resistance in your legs by starting off gradually and then over a long period of time increase the amount of training you do. But it has to be gradual.

I personally didn't have the patience or the willingness to go through all the hassle, so for cardio training I just cycle instead of running.

There's a few experienced runners on here like daveirl who should be able to give you better advice, although I'd imagine the advice would be quite similar. Gradually increase the training over time.

As the man says it is not per choice that I have to build it up, due to excess on the auld honeymoon and that (food I mean + Drink ;) )

I went back running the beach there about a month back, nothing major a 25 minute run, no issue, then back on the track with the soccer, did a 3 lap warm up, then onto a 6 lap endurance run, nearly fuppin killed me, was in pure agony after it..

I understand that rest will help, BUT I had this issue last year also, even with 3 months off I still have it!! really frustrating

yup, ease yourself back into a routine. but if you need to keep training and cant afford to stop working out your legs then bike is good but id recommend some swimming. i dont mean 400 lengths of a swimming pool, you gotta take it easy. ive found in the past that if i had shin splints running on them just made them worse because of the 'stamping' when on roads, track, treadmill, etc. swimming should solve this problem

yeah, and whether front or back depends on how much uphill/downhill you are doing. Good running shoes goa long way towards reducing the shock effect up your legs which doesn't help.

I ALWAYS get shin splints whenever I run on the road eventho I do loads of stretching before and after my run - never get them from the threadmill - so I just stick to that now =)
