Favourite Bar?

Simple which is the most popular bar in Dublin? (Sorry out of towners!)
Please expand on why it's favourite, pref not "cos all me matez go there"
I will put a poll up here once I get 10 pubs...
This pub will be classed as boards favourite bar btw. So a lot of pride is at stake...

My favourite is Anseo on Camden St. The first time I was there, it was a friends birthday. I went up to the bar, talking away with the barman (Eddie). I thanked him, went back to my seat. At this time I was living in Bray, I decided there and then to move into the South Circular Road area. I told Eddie my plan. It was packed at this stage!! I had a great night, bade my farewell, and sauntered to my friends where I had to stay.

    Fast forward 2 months.

I've just looked at a house share, the people seem lovely, they leave it to me to decide whether I want to move in. I've arranged to meet my mate in Anseo, (I hadn't been back in those months.) I walk up to the bar, Eddie hops up, says, "how'ya Barry. How you keepin' haven't seen you in ages, did you get your flat sorted out yet? Guinness isn't it?"

And that is why Anseo is the best pub in Dublin. The staff are the friendliest in Dublin and after meeting me just once, he remembered everything I had said from two months ago.

Vote Anseo! (When the poll comes up...)

Anseo is a great pub if you're only out for a few drinks. When you say "Favourite bar" it makes me think of clubs etc..
I dont really have one favourite bar per se,it all depends on what kind of night Im up for.
If I had to choose Id have to go with Whelans

That is the scope of this.... Bruxelles, Whelans, Rira, Market Bar, Eamonn Dorans, Renards, Club M.... Its all good its open to the floor. But try and justify it.

I know cross-posting is probably frowned upon, but I couldn't be arsed to reiterate what I already said about Anseo in the 'Nathan Barley' thread, so here it is again...
Yes, it's nice in a grotty, New York stylee, Eddie is a gentleman landlord and the music is normally pretty good, though starting to err on the side of 'ironic' a bit too much for my taste.

It is however chock full of Meeja types, members of The Chalets, hat designers, national-health specs-wearers, webmasters, publishers of impenetrably hip free 'magazines' and assorted other Independent Media Nodes who like to dress like the Scissor Sisters and make with the ironic 'rock' fingers at any given opportunity. Like that twat Alex Zane.

The best bar in Dublin is, without question, McCluskey's in Donnybrook. It's not hip, it's not trendy, it's filled with a mix of students, pensioners, 30-somethings, office workers, bus drivers and the occasional hipster. They serve late (unofficially) and have take out at off-licence prices. Plus it's enormous and has an original, non-styled, 70s interior like a Stena Sealink. And no music, ironic or otherwise, unless you're in on the night that the local Welsh Male Voice Choir are in after practice, in which case you'll get 12 bars of 'Men of Harlech' at about midnight. Why's it good? Because it's not pretentious.

Yeah its hard to say a favourite bar because it really does depend on what type of night you are up for

Chilling out for a few pins, somewhere not loud...(stay local)

Drink doubles, eat a few pills and dance like a rubber chicken(Spirit)

Get a ride, where are all the nice woman??(You will be lucky in Dublin)

Have you been in Anseo on a weekday night..? And besides, I don't see the need to say, "You're choice is cr*p! Mines better!" We're all big enough to play unsupervised or did you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed Magpie?

    1) No, unfortunately my days of midweek boozing are behind me. And on those occasions when I venture out during the week (and I agree, this is the only time to go out) I opt for O'Neills on Pearse Street, which is another excellent boozer.

    2) I was just taking the opportunity of pointing out that in fact, the emperor is stark bollock naked, despite opinions to the contrary voiced by such luminaries as the Irish Times Magazine 'What's Hot' list.

OK, Anseo is fine, it's the new Thomas House or whatever. However until quite recently it was a nice Old Man's Local called 'Con's Pub', had exactly the same friendly staff, and yet was not frequented by hordes of head-nodding rare-breakbeat mash-up of the Wombles afficionados dressed in pink "Japanese No Likey My Cockfart Teddy Bear" t-shirts and kiddies sunglasses jamming up the place, and in my opinion was therefore a f uck sight better.

    Anseo all the way!

Quiet game of chess with lovely music during the week. Wall to wall hotness and hopping at weekends. Not many people I know have fun 'ironically' there, it's 'actual fun' which is rare to find in Dublin these days. Superb pints, not to pricey and the staff are fantastic!

Think the Scissor Sisters are quite snappy dressers btw :)

I think the 'new' old man's pub appeals to me because we're sick of the chrome and smirnoff ice hovels that pass for bars in the city centre. i want cosy, friendly places.

Anseo reminds me of being in the pub with my folks having red lemonade and a bad of crisps as a kid, only they have fairy lights, music I like, and nice girlies!

*WoW* I heard anseo was a great bar (i've never drunk there), but that's pretty impressive!! I was going to vote for Eamon Dorans, (great atmospere, nice beer garden, people there are cool...except for the goths :D), but it's getting a bit kackery of late....in light of recent revelations, i am officially voting for anseo!! (blind mans vote since i've never been there...)

Agreed, the poll is a tad limited..
The only place I'd drink out of them is Whelans. And that's only when there's a good band on.

My own favourite pub in Dublin is The Front Lounge. Completely laid back, cool music, nice people, good booze, late opening.. and if it's not late enough for you, just saunter over to Isoldes Tower and keep going till 4am.. sweet.

Eh ........... Whelan's just about gets my vote by a whisker because I simply love the music there.

The Market Bar is a fine place for old 'uns like me (that is, over 25) as there is no blasting music to make you scream at each other and strain to hear conversation! A lot of hotness there too...

Places like "Spirit" arnt actually Bar's but nightclubs [or whatever the kids call them these days]. Should they really be included? If you have to pay into the place it isint really a bar in the sence of the word that we know.

My favourite's would be my local's tbh.

Flannery's Anyone. No better place on a monday night, thats for sure!

Also like messers (ocassionally), the porterhouse, Doyles, Hogans, Whelans, Foggy Dew, Sin E, I could go on :D

Must give Ansoe a try though, I hear good things about it :)

    Croppy Acre, Ellis Quay.

Watch out for the hobos and grab your 3 euro pints, lager or stout.

"He [pub landlord] repeated the exercise over a three-day period the following week and again found it to be good for business. He decided to introduce the €3 a pint price permanently just over four months ago."

Ok, I'll bite. What is Atari Jaguar?

Btw the new wave of "Pubs" has been a blight on the nations capital, a testament to Human greed and tastelessness. I loved the old style and continue to drink in Bankers or the Old Stand in town. Or the Ball Alley in homeland Lucan. Great Stout and no booming musak. Brill!

Dorans is Dublins premier rock'n'roll sh*thole & gets my vote!
There are some bogey characters hangin around but theres always a crowd of people up for a laugh.
i also love the way theres a mix of all types of folks in the same place.
the only place where i know of where bono can be at one end of the bar & a gang of "mad out of it" chavs are at the other!!
its free in to the club most nights & the music aint bad either esp thursday nights.

Perhaps I'm missing the point but can anyone enlighten me as to why the thread titled 'Favourite Bar?' features a poll with options restricted to watering holes in Dublin alone?

There is an Ireland outside Dublin you know. My favourite bar at the moment is probably the Beerkeeper in Dundalk ( www.beerkeeper.ie ) which has a great atmosphere, lovely decor, and over 100 beers from around the world (including Staropramen from Prague, a recent addition to my list of favourites :) ).

    => Atari Jaguar, tbh.

Its all about Solas (formerly The modern Green Bar). The food is quality and is quite cheap too. Stay away from the cheap "Solas Lite" beer though, gives you nasty hangovers.

Mulligans do the finest pint of Guinness in the land as far as I'm concerned.. and I've tried it in many many different pubs..

Neds of Townsend St: Don't they claim to open at 7am? I rememeber standing outside that pub at opening time one morning. Freezing cold, I just wanted a hot whiskey to warm me cockles.. They didn't open. I wasn't happy.

I voted for Whelan's for the simple fact that it's become our college canteen. We go there for lunch most days the girl who works there loves us and gets us giant bowls of soup and has started laying on brown bread with the soup especially for us. If we ask for chips, huge portions appear. She also pulls an excellent pint and doesn't complain if someone (okay me) asks for a hot port to help cure my cold.

I also love the new fireplace and they usually have good music playing all of the above combined with a relanxed atmosphere make it a home away from home. :D
