    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4257961.stm

I remember going to see when it was on display in the Ilac Centre Library, the machine which was developed for Stevie Wonder that would read a typed document out when it was placed on it in the same way as you would a photocopier and thought, "Thats great, but what are the chances of the ordinary blind person getting to use it. 15 years later, my sister has one in her home which she uses to read her bills and letters.

It is for this reason that the technology used in the above article gives me a degree of excitement. A blind person reading weather maps. It opens up access to a new branch of science for blind people. There are other applications which this technology could be used for. simple things like allowing a blind person do washing without getting whites mixed up with coloured. or putting Reds in with sky blues. Even recognising tins without having to stick little barcodes on everything and using the pen scanner which is availible.

I hope the technology here is put into the mainstream so all blind people can benefit from it.
