Ah, I'm just putting this down for the hell of it.

I think that, while the true essence of punk has been lost with many of these modern bands, it's clear to see that the basics of punk have continued to develop on throughout the ages.

    Guess I'm inbetween.

    What's punk?

Yes. We simply don't get bands like The Exploited anymore. Some of the so-called "Punk" of today... it's almost like calling Linkin Park Death Metal.

anyone who thinks punk is dead is a fool, no exceptions.

    I love this:
Slang. A young man who is the sexual partner of an older man.

So no, punk is not dead.

I dont think its Dead, but i think its on its last legs. Its spiderwebbed into so many different genres that its dilluted itself. But it is still there.

I'm with Ferdi on this one.

Gotta say dead. Modern punk is so far away from what punk was originally it's depressing what gets called punk these days.

Having said that, US and UK punk back in the day were different things too.

IMO, punk has 2 major elements - the music and the attitude. The attitude is still there, but the music is fairly diluted, but i wouldn't say its dead.

Do you really believe the attitude is still there? I thought that punk had quite a nietzsche -esque attitude about it. You know the whole "I wanna destroy" thing. I just don't see that anymore. Punk (if it isn't dead, which I believe it is) should have died a long time ago. Right round the passing of Sid. Why must we hold on to things that mean so much?
If punk was a family, it would be a sick state of affairs... Akin to keeping someone on a ventilator who is completely braindead.

The 3 chord riff isn't used as much, but we still hear punk in so much music nowadays, it'll never die off completely.

punk is an attidude 100%. just because the sound changes dosnt mean its dead, its just...changed!

modern heavy rock/metal sounds different to the way it used to - is metal dead?

i hate this "if its not sid vicious, its not punk" attitude, it does a great dis-service to the genre and music as a whole. why cant music diversify and change with the times?

Just because something is called punk doesn't mean it is. And what do you mean by "modern punk". MTV punk?

That was only one part of punk. There were punk bands who believed in "I wanna destroy", there were bands who just sang about it, there were punk bands that sang about their everyday lives and there were bands who were just in it for the fun.

I just don't see that anymore. Punk (if it isn't dead, which I believe it is) should have died a long time ago. Right round the passing of Sid.
What has Sid Vicious got to do with punk music? :D

Is impressionism dead? Somebody tell the art lovers.

punk was and is long dead. it's a political belief, it's an attitude, it's a social underclass, it's a conscious decision to drop out and stand up against a corrupt system which has no place for in it.

Punk is not music. Music is a symptom of a punk ideal. Come on the may day march and see how many 'punks' are still around. Punk is DEAD, long live mediocre central ideals and policital correctness, dumbed downed ideas and docility in society.
