    Here's another one: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=189890

I doubt the age profile has changed that much.

Just curious, from my perspective the age of posters appears to getting alot younger in here?

Hmmmmm that thought struck me too but I think After Hours has always suffered an age deficit!.

I agree - there seem to be a lot of younger posters at the moment - put my age in before it hits the 31-40 category

Some of the jokes do make a lovely swishing sound as they zoom straight over the younger heads...

I'm not being a prude, but I've not been too impressed with some obviously inappropriate comments involving sexual connotations between posters of vastly differing ages, some of which have been borderline paedophiallic in nature.

How about obliging everyone to put in their age on their profile- and listing it under location on their posts? Of course people could lie through their teeth- but an obvious attempt at making things a little more open might be helpful.

There is a shipload of txt-speak going on in here and on the PI forum, which masks obvious giveaways about people (as well as being annoying as hell and difficult to read). Its not as obvious as you might imagine to try to determine people's ages.

Implementing a policy of displaying people's ages from their profiles on their posts, would place the onus on individual members to truthfully place their personal information in the public domain. While people may lie- the onus would have been passed on, and any ambiguities would be on the part of individuals, rather than on the part of the website.

    S.

Not at all, if they're using txt-speak they're mentally no older than about 12 whatever their physical age.

smccarrick: That's quite a strong thing to say. Would you link to some examples please?

I've noticed that there seems to be a lot more kids on the site recently also. The only real effect for me is that I make allowances for stupid posts more often; assume the poster is a kid.

The age being displayed besid ethe user handle is a good idea I think. But the only people this would really matter about would probably lie.

I'm 25. have to remind myself every so often :S

Ok- two specific examples would be correspondence on the Valentine's thread, and the Boob thread.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=225085 (specifically page 2)

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=220716 (4 different people, including myself removed inappropriate comments.....)

I could do a further trawl- those two threads stick out like a sore thumb.

We're just getting older rhyming with the old people that we would get annoyed at by saying such things as:

"In my day butter was much cheaper."
    and
"Stop riding that bicycle-farthing on the walking pavement or I'll hit you with my pikestaff."

No it's just we are getting older :(

I'm 18, and shocked at the actual age of many posters, i would have guessed the average age to be a lot higher... I also agree with smccarrick on the age thing, though i would probably suffer because of it, as I find a lot of preconceptions about people we dont know personally can arise from knowing a persons age.

As for the txt-speak, as posted in a previous thread regarding mobile phones I would be a text addict, if such a thing exists, and can manage to keep it out of any posting since I joined boards, and though I can see its practicality in actually texting, its highly unnecessary and annoying on boards. Boo, down with that sort of thing!

22 this month, used these forums for about a year when i was 18 under a different name, but in generall i've found it the same (as in no more or less stupid/immature people), the only thing different i noticed from being away that long was how strict boards.ie has gotten
I suppose that's neccecary with the apparant increase in levels of muppetery on the boards you guys seem to be talking about.....
Dosen't bother me though...i tend to keep my nose clean :)

I'm thinking the internet must be becoming a more appealing thing for teenagers to do. Although because I'm 15 my past experiences are kind of void because I was hardly a teenager back when I thought I was the youngest around.

I don't think having ages in profiles is a good thing. People aren't going to take someone with "13" in their profile seriously. Even just knowing that(their age) is going to change how you approach that person in what you say or anything. It's demeaning for the person in question to be treated like a child, even if you think they are one. Is not one of the great virtues of the internet that your physical age isn't the one that matters - it's your mental age?

I'm all for treating people who use txt speak like idiots, though.

Unfortunately a fair share of the younger boardsies don't actually contribute anything except blatant spam and "filler".

still, that's no reason to single out the good ones. Treat idiots like idiots because they are idiots, not because they're children.

    I'm not disagreeing :)
I think there's some younger people here that really contribute and you really wouldn't guess they're that young, they just get lumped in with the crappy ones a lot of the time when people find out their age.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,872 ✭✭✭segadreamcast

So the vast majority of boards users are between 15-30...and are probably male too.

No huge surprises here to be honest!

    (For the record - I'm 17)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,555 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

    um

the vast majority of after hours readers....

I'd imagine most of the older, more distringuished boards members wouldn't touch this forum with asok's ten foot pole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Why would you say they're probably male, NoelRock?
Can girls not be geeks too?

Statistics don't lie. There are more guys than gals on the boards, especially certain boards (though AH would have more of them than others).

19 year old male... how typical

16 joining , but had a different profile i ditched first i think

20 in April, joined when I was 15 (does math to make sure).

    April 2005 - March 2001 = 15. Excellent.

The Internet should be an ageless, sexless medium if you so choose it to be. You are ageless and sexless unless you specify otherwise. The Internet is not a safe place for children, I think boards.ie does more than it should by censoring swear words already.

If parents want to allow their children to use boards.ie, or the Internet at large, they can supervise them. Otherwise, keep them off.

I'm a 14 year old male but i would consider myself very mature for my age.

I dont understand all these people who think differently of me just because I'm younger than them. Just because my physical age is younger than most people here does not mean that my mental is also younger.

And I'm also pleading with people my age who are abusing boards.ie and just posting spam to leave boards.ie forvever, you are ruining it for people like me who actully have something meaningful, valid and worthwhile to say.

I'm also asking the twentysomethings to stop treating people my age like we are babies because we are not, we are young adults who are soon going to be leaving home and being thrown into the real world.

And to all those doubters of my capabilities as a boards.ie member, just remember you were once 14 and I'm sure that when you were 14 you didn't appreciate older people ridiculing you

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

Mentally and emotionally abusing young people is what secondary school is all about.

    "Education" my arse.

Oh, and just as a point of interest, I didn't like it when I was fourteen, but I can now appreciate that it was probably for the best. Or at least I can claim that and use it as an excuse.
    Ever watch "Dazed and Confused"?

(btw, it was REALLY hard to avoid replying to the above post with "would you like a woweepop?").
