6 kg in 6 months?

I just heard the westpoint ad on the radio that if you can lose 6 kg in 6 months you get free membership. Now I'm not great with the aul metric (it's too late to check now cos I'm gonna go to bed) but is that doable(is doable a word?) with going to the gym around 4 times a week and changing to a somewhat proper diet do you reckon? I know everyone is different and all and people lose weight at different rates but on average. (if there is an average for this type of thing)

And while I'm here does anyone know what westpoint is like? Is it halfway decent or would I be better off just joining a different gym and paying?

    Thanx for any help.

Edit: Forget to tell you anything about me. I'm fairly chunky like so it's not as if I'll have to look far to find 6 kg to lose if ya know what I mean.

6kg is just under a stone. If you are overweight, you can definitely do it in 6 months (I did it in about 2½ months a few years ago). If you work hard and eat right, there is nothing stopping you from losing up to 2lb a week....

That'll help. The more you have to lost, the eaiser it is to lose. 6kg shouldn't be a problem in 6 months. I did it in 4 weeks at the start.

Yes, with dedication, the right diet and exercise program it is quite doable for some people. Of course, there is no way I could realistically drop a stone.

Well, judging by this picture it would probably require the removal of an arm, or maybe half your leg. :)

Well that picture is about a year and a half old, end of sixth year on holidays, I've lost weight since then, well not sure about weight but bf anyway.
Sixth year wasn't the most healthy of years for me :)

Anyway go for it, if anythings its a great motivator, if you don;t make it at least you'll have got value for money.

I lost 13 kg in 3 months by changing my eating habits. Now maybe that's a bit drastic for most people's liking, but I've also kept it off for over a year. So losing 6 kg in six months is very doable

It's very doable, you just have to make sure all aspects of your life are geared towards your goal i.e. diet, exercise etc.

Best of luck if you do decide to do it!

I'd be horribly underweight if I lost 6kg! Could do with free gym membership though.

Not sure if you're a man or a woman, but if you're a guy, you should go to Weightwatchers - you would drop 6kg in no time, especially if you are 'chunky' to begin with. I have known men drop almost 3kg in one week (admittedly the first 'detox' week).
Men seem to lose more easily on WW than women, or at least more quickly.

If you're a woman, WW is the way to go too. I'm surprised Westwood didn't set a more difficult target...are you sure it's 6kg in 6 months, and not 6 weeks? (Though that's not impossible either, and safely).

Hi N_Raid, even for those paying the 300-350 per year (not sure what the deal is now), it is an excellent gym. Very good value for money. I'd like to see them open a little earlier (Westwood opens at 6am) and Westpoint at 7am.
Weekends they close a little earlier then most gyms too. I have always found the instructors very good and the club VERY tidy and clean. If you can loose 6kg in 6 months then hey, free, lucky you! BTW, I lost 23Kg in 9 months by eating healthy and exercising 3 times a week. No joke, it is doable and it will change your life! If you really want it, then go for it. Best of luck with it.

What are the terms? That's so easy it's not even funny, I can lose 7lbs in fluids in a night and lost 12 lbs to make a weigh in in two days before!

To lose 6kg simply eat like a fat ass for a day or two with plenty of salty foods and drink loads of water. Then for the next week do Atkins and you'll lose close on if not 6kg if you weigh in in the morning. Even a single dose of a light diuretic like aldactone could take off 6kg overnight...

LOL, very true. Another tip for easy weight "loss" is to do the 2nd weigh-in just after you've blocked the toilet with a big huge steaming dump :)

Yeah it does seem kinda easy if it's only a stone in six months. I'm gonna ring them tomorrow and see what the story is.
And thanx for all the comments and advice everyone.

Newgrange- I'm a bloke. And I'm sure WW can help you get good results and there'd be loads in the same position as me but I'd just feel so self conscious going in there I really doubt I'd be able to stick it.
And yeah I've heard it a few times since, it's definately six months.

    Sure I'll see what happens

Is that aldactone stuff safe?? what is it, a drink? If you use it is it easy to keep the weight off? Lost about a stone so far since december in weightwatchers but im finding it hard to lose the last few pounds. Could this diuretic stuff help?

No. It's a diuretic meaning it will cause your body to lose water not fat.

    .logic.

hmm im sure its possible... I have put on at least that much or more since i stopped going to wespoint about 6 months ago :D So i would say yes you can.

Oh its an excellent gym, very nice etc.

True - but it is the safest diuretic cos it spares potassium ;)

Losing 6% bodyfat in 6 months would be a far more worthwhile challenge that would exclude Atkins dieters and crash dieters (cos crash diets cause muscle loss which means a relative increase in bf% relative to weight!)

Sorry I took so long to reply but I just got around to going down. I went down and had a look around. The place seems pretty nice. Only thing is they're closing for refurbishment for about two weeks I think it was. But westpoint members can use Carlyle (Carlisle? sp?) during that.

So the offer is on until the end of the week. It's as straightforward as it sounds. Depending on how long you join for you pay the €395 for the year (€495 for 19 months) with no joining fee (this isn't an ad by the way) and get weighed and all the rest. Then you do your gym thang until september and you get weighed again. If you've lost 6kg you get the price of a years membership (€395) back. According to the staff the challenge is not to just lose 6kg but to keep it off until september.

What I'm kinda worried about is at the last gym I was in you started off with all the cardio then moved on to weights. If I move on to weights then the whole thing about muscle weighing more than fat so I might even gain weight but lose body fat. I hope it won't be a problem cos I'm not looking to be a bodybuilder or anything so I don't think I'll be gaining that much muscle.

So I might be back in about 6 months trying to find out how to lose a few kg without caring whether it's muscle or fat.

Yeah the blanch one. There are signs in reception and yer woman said to me when she was showing me around the place. It mightn't be two weeks it might only be a week or something I just remember it went from the end of february until sometime in march. They're getting new carpets and updating all the machines downstairs. When you're downstairs by the steppers and all there are two silver machines over there. They're updating all the black ones to those silver ones.

Carlisle is near the KCR in kimmage, near crumlin. Bit of a trek I know it's not for too long.
