Considering that chelsea are so far ahead can/does finishing second/third to either team really matter to them or is it just pride ?

Only a few months ago this was the most over-hyped game probably in premiership history

Despite Chelsea being the obvious favourites for the title, I think this is the game that everyone wants to see. Should be a good one, well exiting one anyway.

Should be a close one, up until about a week ago I really thought United could take the three points, but Ive seen Arsenal twice in the last week and they look to be playing a bit again. Still without Toure (or more to the point with Cygan) there is always a good chance.

If Im putting money down Ill go for a 2-2 draw.

Finishing 2nd means automatic qualification for the CL, so it does matter to them, but I'm sure both are still playing to win the league not to finish 2nd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    I can't see anything but a United win :)
Especially because Toure is out, they just don't have the defensive cover.

    A 1 goal home win I'm afraid :(

    I predict a boring 0-0 which no-one will wish to comment on...ahem. ;)

United win. I don't know why I feel so confident...it could be the fact that Wenger psychologically looks so weak and really pissed off recently regarding Fergusons comments.
To be honest with you, for a man who has a degree in Psychology...he really does not show it when he loses the rag with Ferguson.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 498 ✭✭Harry2001

I always have a laugh when People go on about Wenger getting rattled by Ferguson, Ferguson is the one who seems to be in a permanent state of rage so he must be rattled constantly.

    1-1 and title to Chelsea

utd win. really cant see arsenal winning, utd are in great form apart from the chelsea match but we didnt really get started there. 'boro was a better indication of our form.

solid all over the park with a steely determination to win, unlike arsenal of late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Brian017

I can't see Utd winning. Arsenal will be too fired up after October and in Highbury too.

All remains to be seen I guess.

Weakened defense withg a team breaking into its stride, compared to full defence with a steady record for the season so far.

A world class midfield, compared to a world class midfield sans one player in teh centre.
I can see Vieira being great, but outclassed by Keano and Scholes combined.

Aresnal attack is more potent than the United attack no doubt, but aresnal won't be bale to break cause we'll just foul em.

All in all suggests draw or united win :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭Gangsta

any ideas when Toure is back? With cygan playing arsenal'll defintely concede. I've been away n holiday for a while and just catching up on everything.

But tbh i feel arsenal will raise their game and be the better team but will concede to poor defending.

time to see how uniteds defence holds up against a great attacking side. cant see them keeping a clean sheet. Conceded two against chelsea, can seem the doing the same.
cant see arsenal keeping a clean sheet either. 2-2 would seem like a good bet.

however, having said all that. i will go for a 0-0

I'll go with a scoring draw and at least one sending off.

How'd they do against Arsenal last time?

I think this is going to be one of the games of the season. Arsenal v. United are always hyped up but most of the time they fail to deliver on the pitch but this is different. Chelsea are 10 ahead of Arsenal and 11 of United. Arsenal have to win.........Man United have to win.......i will eat my hat if its a 0-0. I think both teams will go for the win from the start. A draw is the best result for Chelsea. I'm going to go with a 2-3 win for United.

I'll go with numerous boards rows, a thread locking, and two or three bannings...

Oh, you meant the match itself? Haven't the foggiest... :D

think the team that wins the game will jump start their season...think that both arsenal and united have a godd chance of the cl and with the games starting soon i reckon the teams that wins the game will make it to the final of the cl.. so much so that i think i will put money on it

but i also think it will be 0-0

the ref wont let united get away with the fouling yous did in the last game. arsenal had a bad day that day, might happen again. but in front of the highbury crowd i cant see them doing that.

but the fact everyone is expecting goals and drama. could well turn out to be a dull 0-0er.

i just hope its the football that makes the headlines and nothing else.

    I love that,
first off, cheers galactus, I actually knew the score :)

Arsenal had a bad day, no.
Arsenal played just as they always do, but United played against them and didn't let them play.
Its not that Arsenal had a bad day, they did fine, its that they couldn't compensate for United's quality in holding and getting back possesion.
It looked like they had a bad day, but they didn't.

Can someone tell me the last time Arsenal won this game btw?

Arsenal foul just as much as United, and the ref will be very fearful of making this match about him again, especially after the whoray from the last game, both teams will get booked or given lee way equally.

    Bets:

These are interesting bets with what I consider good odds:
I think I'll put a euro on all of them except for Arsenal winning :)
Honastly thinking of putting a cumulative on 1 2 and a bet on Rooney to score the peno[11-2] which would give me a payoff of 225 quidish, that'd be cool :)

Ashley Cole to be sent off 16 - 1
A penalty to be awarded in the game 5 - 2
    Roy Keane to score 8 - 1
    Man Utd 2 - 0 12 - 1
    Arsenal 2 - 0 8 - 1
Arsene Wenger to get a delivery from Four Star pizza during the game 200 - 1

Arsenal were the better team and did not foul as bad as Utd and had a good penalty claim.

    They won the community shield.

The dreaded thread, I just hope people can respect each others opinon without resorting to name calling etc.

Now for the game, well I really think this could go either way, I'll be borring and go with a score draw. I just hope we'r not all talking about the ref after the game.

    They won the community shield.

I meant an actual game, but if you want to talk like that, sure we've wont he last two games against Arsenal this, what chance do they have :)
Arsenal were the better team and did not foul as bad as Utd and had a good penalty claim.

What part of Arsenals preformance reflects that they had the belief that they were the best side in the country?
What part of their performances afterwards show this better side quality they have?

What part of the fact that in total Arsenal had 24 fouls, while United only had 20, reflects on their apparent bad foulers?

What about penalty claims, United had two, Arsenal had one, there was only real one absolute definate peno and we didn't get it.

Most importantly however, What part of the scoreline reflects that arsenal were the better team, considering that it wasn't a 1-0 nick at the end, it was 2-0?

This match will almost certainly be a damp squib as Chelsea have won the one horse race.

I think it will be a hard fought 1 - 1 draw with no major incidents.

they were on top wen RVN scored the peno and obviously had to risk everything to get back level thus leaving themvunerable at the back for a C-A.

A dub in Glasgow enough about chelsea please

In the league I take it, you mean. 8th May 2002, 1-0. Which won them the league at Old Trafford. The last time Utd won at Highbury was way back in 1999, 2-1 with the two goals coming from Keane including one with 2 minutes to go. By the way this was the first interactive game. :)

How many shots did Arsenal get on target in that game? I believe it was one shot on target and 6 or 7 off (none of them even close). United had the better shot stats. The only time in that game where Arsenal were on top was from 20 mins into the match to 35 minutes into the match, and maybe for 15 minutes or so in the second half. United were the better team and were far more threatening (which the two penalty claims suggest).

using penalty claims as a way to judg if a side performed better is stupid.

so when chelsea were the better side than lpool at anfield because their of the shot they scored?bull

A team can perform great and still get beaten 3-0. However with penalty claims it shows who on most occasions was more threatening. United had better shot stats because they had more shots on and off target than Arsenal. One shot on target by Arsenal really should say its own story, United were more threatening.

Hard one to call, should be goals as they will have aluminium in goal and we will probably start with the joker in goal.
2-2 scoreline is what I will put some money on.
Everyone expecting a few cards, hard to know if there will be or not, its talked up that it will.

But who ever gets the most fouls against should really win. FFS I have heard it all now!

I reckon Arsenal will hammer them, with Rio getting found out for the over rated ball watcher that he is. :)

I think predictions are hilarious. It's just pot luck. You may aswell just put all your money on black.

I mean, here we have two extremely even sides - top two over the past ten years consistently, and now sitting just one point apart. To say one will hammer the other is just guess work - hoping it'll happen so you can say I told you so.

Realistically it could go either way. It may be a tight game. It may be a landslide. Who's to know?

All in all I predict a nerve wracking swear inducing match for both sets of fans and players alike. I just really really hope we're not talking about the ref tomorrow. I'm just sick of it at this stage - not just with my own teams (Utd's) games, but all games...every time we're highlighting ref and lines....oops Asst Ref decisions.

Please let it be some sublime football that decides it. And please let that come from the God like presence of Phil Neville!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

After all the hype this game is going to probably be a disappointment at either 0-0 or 1-0 to one of the teams after a scrappy goal.

I know for one thing I ain't looking forward to it, oh the lot of a footy supporter is one of misery !!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭kida

The key to this match will be how Arsenal react pychologically to the defeat at OT. Wenger has admitted that this got to the younger players.

United team I would like to see put out is

    Carroll
    GN RF MS GB
    RK PS
    CR WR RG
    LS
Don't think he will go that attacking away from home, so expect Giggssie on the bench(he has a tight Hamstring and either Fletcher, O'Shea or P Neville) in midfield.

Have a feeling this will be a cracker - bit worried about MR Publicity being ref though - he likes to be centre stage so expect him to make a high profile controversial decision, early red card anyone?

Arsenal to win, United to drop a clanger for the winning goal and a few Victory salutes to the ManU Fans

    2-1 Arsenal

Key to this match will of course be, Uniteds finishing and Arsenal's ability to break through to create chances.

Arsenal if they get chances will probably convert them.
United aren't as sure about conversion with the Van Nist

    However
United will definally create chances in the weakened defence that Arsenal have.
Arsenal will have trouble creating chances against United.

    Its tonight, I can't wait :D

Looking at recent form Utd. have the edge but only slightly and with Arsenal playing at home it kinda cancels out Utd.'s advantage.

It's too tight to call and as dirkey_wynne said "It's just pot luck".
But having said that I'll go for a Utd. win or a draw.

    B.

Might drop into Paddy Power on the way home - think I'll go 0-1 with Rooney to score the goal.

not sure what to expect tonight. there have been times when utd v arsenal has dissappointed, not recently of course! its really unusual to find these two teams battling for 2nd place. hats off to chelsea they really have turned the heat up on utd and arsenal.

hoping for a good night of football, there are times when utd play the physical game its a bit embarrassing, seems we cant beat them with the ball, but hopefully tonight the football will do the talking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

utd have every right to be confident based on recent form. their league form is marginally worse than chelsea's the past 10 games or so. 33 out of 39, dropping only 6 points in 13 matches, undefeated since october 30th -> 3months undefeated in the league, winning all and drawing 3.

ever since OT, arsenal have been rattled and havn't looked the same. their knees are wobbling, one more punch from utd, and they'll be out. basing it purely on form utd are hot favourites imo.

but being at highbury, the compact corridor that it is, utd will have to be at their best and form 3 rows of defence, gladiator style. arsenal when their in the mood can rip open anyone and utd must double up as much as possible and make arsenal work to get past them. heinze and silvestre will be key for utd as when their gee'd up, their very aggresive players and can muscle people out of the game. i wouldnt worry about rio or the right side.

ronaldo needs a big game, he hasnt really turned on the style against cole yet, if he gets the ball enough, we could well see one of them being sent-off.
