Basically at 5 ft 7 and 11 stone I'm not very happy and am as weak as a kitten,
Couple of years ago I used to go swimming in the sea every night for a month and it really helped me shed the pounds and did wonders for my skin.

Now I'm sadly living inland and contimplating going swimming once a week in a pool (cant go more than that...poor student you know!), so basically what I want to know is, is it worth it? Will once a week make any difference at all?

    Any excerise will be beneficial.
Is there a club you can join to get a student discount at the pool?
Alternatively you could always run, doesn't cost a dime.
Btw whats the problem with 11st?

I've heard a mixture of chlorine and other people's sweat and urine(if you're lucky) does wonders for your complexion ;)

How much does it cost to go to the pool these days?

Just remember any kind or regular cardio is good for you.

Not only that but if the ventilation is poor, the vapour damages your lungs and gives you asthma.

I used to swim a fair bit (12+ hrs a week) and remember one day in college I lost to a friend in a competition to see who could hold their breath for the longest, and he was born with weak lungs and smoked 20 a day!!

But dont worry about that :) The pool I swam in was an utter sh1thole. Id say most whouldnt give any problem at all, as long as its well kept

About €5 - €8 euro in most places in Dublin Id say.

To see any real results you would probably need to be exercising more than once a week. Three times would be more likely to give you the sort of results you are after.

Are there any other activities you can do - running, brisk walking, cycling (even commuting to college?), team sports. A lot of these will cost you little and combined with the swim will give you the exercise you need. Alternatively look at joining a pool / gym.

If you end up paying €8 a go for a swim, then that is over €400 per annum, which could well get you a 'student membership' at your local gym. You might even be able to pay monthly, making it easier to manage.

    Good luck!

Swimming is really good excercise, If you can only go once a week I would recommend you swim a good few lenghts in the time frame you have to swim, but for real results you would need to be swiming at least three times a week. The pool that I swim in(stewarts, palmerstown) for non members it is about €5 but seen as I am a member because I am on the swimming club it only costs €2
If you combine swimming with say running or power walking you should be able to regain your fitness. But swimming is always good to keep up your stamina and build muscles. the trick is in when swimming, when you feel tired, dont stop swim a few more lenghts, dont give up as easy and that should improve your fitness gradually also bring water with you,it helps! do all the four strokes when you are swimming, not just front crawl, because the other strokes help build up different parts of the body.

    Good look!

I work at a pool in the midlands and a student swim costs €4.60 .It's most likely pretty much the same outside the cities.
