mmmm..... Should probably have asked best living/dead guitarist of all time so here I go.

    Living:

    Alan Holdsworth
    Steve Vai
    Frankie Gombale
    Yngwie Malsteen
    John Petrucci

    Dead:

    Jimi Hendrix (Of Course)
    Rory Gallagher
Dimebag Darrell (Just listen to Cemetary Gates and tell me thats not brilliance)
    Stevie Ray Vaughan

There's my Pick of the Heap

P.S: That was picked before i even noticed a Poll at the top of the page. Not Bad I must Say.

What about Randy Rhoads, BB King, Chet Atkins, Tony Iommi?

What about Randy Rhoads, BB King, Chet Atkins, Tony Iommi?

Well Randy Rhoads is a god and i'll kick myself for not remembering that one.

BB King , and i'm not being to bad here, couldn't play more than 8 chords and in my eyes knowing a few more than eight is a requirement for being the best guitarist of all time.

Chet Atkins deserves recognition, some of the stuff he did with absolutely ridiculus tunings was brilliant.

And I just plain don't like Tony Iommi, as good as he was.

    John Lennon?????

    Pat Methany is a genius.

All of those are very good, but I think Zakk Wylde should at least be in the running. Better than Randy Rhoads, imo. Nearly every guitarist Ozzy's played with has been excellent! John McLaughlin too, what a guitarist

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Eldarin

have to agree with you on that one Zakk is amazing to listen to and to watch. Ozzfest in boston two or three years ago was an experience

And nobody has mentioned Joe Satriani. Great guitarist!

you great big fool, how could you leave John Petrucci out?!?!? Come back when you know more about great guitarists

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

    anybody even know Pat Methany?

    Mark Knopfler

Dimebag Darrell? being dead dont make him great! What about vai, satch, malmsteen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 869 ✭✭✭goin'_to_the_PS

I don't like dimebag, it was a test, if he wasn't dead his votes would be 0. Sorry i missed some of the greatest guitarists of all, but the were only 10 spaces so i tried to use differant ones to create a broad taste line rangeing from metal to blues

EDIT/ Another test was hendrix, hes good but not that good totally over hiped, My vote was rory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Dmebag was a fantastic guitarist, some of his shredding is second to none.
Not to mention you missed out some true greats, Toni Iommi, Yngwie Malmstein, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, etc etc etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 257 ✭✭ether

Hendrix for inspiring a generation of guitarists, not only was he a brilliant guitarist, but a composer and arranger of his great works. This guy wrote the song that fueled the anger both in and out of Vietnam at that time - Purple Haze.

No but being an amazing guitarist does

    I dunno ,
seems many have been left out there..Richie Blackmore, Alex Lifeson, Martin Barre, Brian May, etc etc I dont think its that easy to say who is tops because so many guitarists are stronger in different areas than others..many are superb at lead and none too brilliant at coming up with unique rythm techniques, others are the opposite, some can have a magical album once in a career and the songs and magic he/she produced on it lives forever in guitarists minds. Others consistantly produce top quality stuff but their music is never on the usual rock media spots etc and so goes unnoticed except for die hard fans etc. So Im not sure its possible to pick A best , maybe a group of a dozen or 20 perhaps is nearer the mark

    ciao' amigos Baggio........

Listen to the album Cowboys From Hell and tell me what you think of his guitar work tbh.

Why has one got to be better than the rest?

Personally I'm glad to see Rory got a few votes, or was even remembered on the poll, but picking a "best" seems a bit futile.

What about John Mclaughlin, yeah Fade I know Pat Metheny he's good but not as good and as diverse as Mclauglin.

    My list would include

    Jimi Hendrix
    John Mclaughlin
    Wes montgomery
    Steve Vai
    Joe Satriani

They would be the guitarists I've listened enough to comment on I guess.

No he couldn't. Have you heard him play drums on his guitar?

Matty Bolger. no one mentioned him at all. I'm discustered

OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE YOU LEFT OUT JOHN SQUIRE!!!

Not even mentioned yet. Do you people know about music al all??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Eldarin

Has no one read this thread at all. The guy said he had to pick ten ppl and he couldn't fit in everyone so he picked a wide variety of guitarists.

either way the best guitarist for variety and sheer ability is Steve Vai, just listen to Passion and Warfare and then try and tell me about a better guitar album with more feeling, ability, emotion and variety in one album.

    You can't it doesn't exist.

Never really payed musch attention to the Roses, but a guy I worked with last Summer was completely obsessed. Squire is indeed pretty damn good.

    P.S. Nice avatar ;)

I only meant it as a joke. Whenever there are discussions like this, people are always gong to be left out, and you have posters diving in with suggestions, the more obscure the better. It reminds me of Jack Black in High Fidelity

Dimebag Darrell how serious is this? What abut Robert Johnson, classical players, Jazz players... Randy Rhoads, SRV, EVH etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 869 ✭✭✭goin'_to_the_PS

i feel dimebag is the best metal guitarist (but is still pretty shi't). Not enough room, please everyone just deal with those listed

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Eldarin

I have to agree, Dimebag Darrell was the best Metal Guitarist of our time. Everything he played was brilliance. For god sake almost everything he played was in standard E tuning and still he managed to make his guitar sound like a death. You just have to hand it do him.

But I still stand by my preference of Steve Vai. The man is a god, Plain and Simple.

next time i see you im gonna slap you.

zakk wylde can shred ea but he writes terrible stuff. i mean who cares if the man can play fast he's not one of the greats though/

Duane Allman - he is an amazing slide player as well as just generally amazing and he plays music that matters.

Malmsteen and his ilk are amazing guitarists but they don't play music for the sake of writing good songs they are just all flash and "look at me i'm really good... and cheesy", in my opinion.

Dimebag was a great guitarist,he is bound to be over praised due to his tragic death but if you listen to his riffs and some of his solo's he was really impressive

Charlie from BUSTED its amazing how well he can jump and play at the same time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭SirLemonhead

    Criss Oliva.

Though Charlie from Busted is a very close second. It's amazing how he can play those intricate riffs, jump AND sing at the same time.

Dimebag Darrell? Gimme a break. Never even heard of the guy until he died...and I KNOW good guitarists.

Rory Gallagher, Greg Howe, Frank Zappa, John Scofield, Slash, Carlos Santana, Walter Becker, Hendrix, Tom Morello.

    Overrated Guitar Players:
Eric Clapton, Mike McCready, Kurt Cobain, most metal guitar players who confuse the average listener with wanky tapping and fast runs.

That is utter bollocks. I would have voted for him whether he was alive or dead, and I'm sure others would have also. There isn't many guitarists in the world that can write solos like Floods, Cemetery Gates, Shattered etc. He was not the most technical player ever. But he had lots of feeling in his songs, just listen to Floods and that will tell you.

Personally I don't like Hendrix, as inventive as he was I never liked his music. Same goes for the other musicians listed there. For me, Dimebag was the best of all time. That is an opinion because I love his music. Obviously one that is shared with alot of the members on this forum.

So don't put Dimebag down because he was an excellent guitarist.
