    Hey,

I was in the gym last night and noticed one guy in particular who had abnormally long arms! I'm not slagging him or anything like that, i was just wondering can doing weights (excessively or otherwise) extend your arms after a while.

This guy was VERY toned with huge arm and chest muscles but his fingers were literally a couple of inches from touching his knees! Are the two related?

In short no. Also having longer arms can be a hindrance for stuff like benching, shoulder press all the pushing movements because of the longer arc of travel involved but can be beneficial for deadlifting and some pulling movements.

It's also much harder for someone with long limbs to put on noticeable muscle mass as the muscle bellies are usually so much longer than normal so props to the guy if he looked large.

Logic always gives great advice! Totally agree, fair play to the long limbed guy - takes alot of dedication for the taller trainers to make good progress. So, fair play and if you see him doing deadlifts then you really should stop him for a chat as its an extremely difficult exercise for a tall long limbed person.

If you notice I said longer arms - I should have clarified, if you have longer arms and shorter legs you can make an extremly powerful deadlifter. Look at Franco Columbo for instance, arguably one of the greatest deadlifters of that era. He had a short torso, short legs and longer arms.

He often deadlifted cars and things of that nature and was one of the defining all round strong men.

However with all over longer limbs, long legs, long torso and long arms deadlifting becomes extremly difficult. The dynamics involved with getting your hips low enough, the bar close enough the driving up through the much longer range of motion you have to use before the lock out at the top and dropping it all the way back down.

It's certainly not easy which is what Transformer was referring to.

Do Not,whatever you do, stop a huge guy in the middle of his deadlifts set,for a chat! At the very least he will tell you where to go! He may flip out and kill you, totally sweet!
Wait until he's between sets or getting a drink or something.Asking for a little advice is usually taken well but asking if he saw last night Simpsons episode mid Personal Best is a recipe for disaster!
