what are your favourite cover versions and why and what bands raped and shat on a perfectly good song. Id like to hear your opinions.
    Favourites: Korn - Word Up
    Johnny Cash-Hurt
    Within Temptation-Running Up That Hill
    Worst:Scissor Sisters-comfortably numb
    Avril Lavigne- Chop Suey

Respect Nightwish, when I saw the thread title on the main page, the first song I thought of was Johnny Cash - Hurt. I only heard his version for the first time about two weeks ago and I love it.
And ya, Avril Lavigne's version sucks the big one. She can't even stay in tune and doesn't know the words properly (I have a live version).

I also like Marilyn Manson's version of Working Class Hero, very powerful.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

yeah its the live version of Avril Lavignes brutalising that cool song that I heard. She just screams "yaddayaddayaddayadda" down the mike. its painful.iimagine all her little groupies idolising her for it.system should sue her.

Cant beat the Johnny Cash version of Hurt has to be one of the all time great covers.
KISS and god gave rock and roll to you II was great also.
worst ones theres to many to mention really avril levignes version of fuel for the metallica
icons thing and the version of basket case she did are all pretty rubbish

    Best:

    Pantera - Seek And Destroy
    Pantera - Cat Scratch Fever
    Marilyn Manson - Personal Jesus

    Worst:

Pantera - Paranoid (with old singer)
    Thats about it really.

She should stick to what she knows. You don't see S.O.A.D doing a cover of Skater Boy! ;)

    stick it to her eljono!
Not a big fan of MM's personal jesus but his decicion to cover the quirky 80s ditty tainted love has gotta be admired.
For a very quirky cover check out Novembre's version of cloudbursting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Pyr0

Yeah Tainted love cover by Manson is pretty cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭jonnybadd

The presidents of the united states version of video killed the radio star is another good quirky little number

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 257 ✭✭ether

what did you think of Korns version of 'the wall' by Pink Floyd?, it was dark and not too different from the original, plus fieldy could get his funky bass right in the groove.

Rage - Kick out The Jams (originally by the MC5)
Masters Of Reality - Cretin Hop (originally by the ramones)
Qotsa - Back to Dungaree High (originally by Turbonegro)
    A Perfect Circle - Imagine

    the bad:
Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar
    Papa Roach - Gouge Away

metallica really should have known better than to cover that song.james hetfield just doesnt sound right singing "as i was going over the cork and kerry mountains". another cover that surprised me was Evanescence version of thoughtless. also the rasmus do covers of play dead(bjork) and an 80s favourite of mine "its a sin" by the pet shop boys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Pyr0

I never really did like "whiskey In The Jar" by Metallica.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,769 ✭✭✭eljono

I forgot MM TAinted Love, cool song but I don't think the drumming is loud enough in it.
I still haven't heard KoRn - Brick in the Wall but have you heard their version of One? It's savage, I think I prefer it to the original (realise probably get stick over that).
@ Nightwish; I just did a quick search for Novembre and got Distances. They sound cool, remind me a bit of Killswitch Engage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

Novembre are such a brilliant band.not very well known here.i only got 2 hear them from a compilation album i got, and fell in love with their Kate Bush cover, and had2 have more! never heard any other korn covers other than word up and pink floyds the wall. they are pretty adept at paying homage to other songs

If you have Take a Look in The Mirror, it's about 6 minutes after the last track. Actually it's probably on www.espew.com

    good

    weezer - velouria (pixies)
weezer - worry rock (green day) nice piano in it.
biffy clyro - you can go your own way (fleetwood mac) the usual biffy screams in this one
jimmy eat world - last christmas (wham!) if i hadn't heard wham!'s version of this song i would of thought it was jimmy's it sounds so like he wrote it.

    bad

weezer - the trooper (iron maiden) they could play it, but the crowd knew the song too well and Rivers stopped and said "too many of you know that song, that's a bad thing" i can't elieve he said that.

Worst crime against anything ever: Will Young pissing all over the late great Jim Morrisson, and his adorable Doors, and deciding to release a cover of one of their classic all time brilliant tunes (Light my Fire). Now when I sing it people think I'm gay.

(Or maybe it's the pink shirt...)

Oh, and Hendix's All Along the Watchtower beats all covers of anything ever made.

You sure that's the old Pantera? I've downloaded what was supposed to be Pantera doing a cover of Paranoid, it actually turned out to be Megadeth.

Ha, I got you all beat.

Tony Ferrino (aka Steve Coogan) covering Help Yourself by Tom Jones.

I do think Disturbed's cover of Shout by Tears for Fears was pretty cool.

Oh, and No Doubt's cover of It's My Life by Talk Talk was excellent.

'Tallica's cover of Whiskey was awful. Thin Lizzy or nothing for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Eldarin

Stevie Ray Vaughans Little Wing (Original Jimi Hendrix) sits very comfortably on the top of the pile for me.

However the Single Worst Cover ever heard by my delicate ears has to be what The Scissor Sister did to Comfortably Numb. Or what some ministry of sound muppets did to Sweet Child of Mine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Dathai

Opeths version of Circle of Tyrants was quite good
Death's version of Painkiller was pretty alright but the original was better
But I thought Meshuggah's version of Attacked by a Shark by "Whimzy" was quite substandard but they put a nice little solo in it.

Vader's version of Funeral Fog by Mayhem wasnt as good as I thought it would be but I think they could do a bit more but they have very different styles, Vader and Mayhem.

    Good:

Foo Fighters + Brian May - Have a Cigar
They sure did that song justice

    Muse - Feeling Good

    Bad:

Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes (Give me the Who any day!)
Scissors Sisters - Comfortably Numb......Those idiots!!! They murdered it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Dathai

Oh and Judas Iscariot's version of Burzum's "War" just sucked...well Judas Iscariot sucks in general imo so I wouldnt have expected anything else in the track...

    A-f*cking-men

    Also:
Hendrix: "Johnny B Goode" (live), Star Spangled Banner (live @ Woodstock)
    U2: "Everlasting love" (acoustic)
Apocalyptica: Unforgive, Refuse Resist, Hall of the Mountain Kings (Movement IV, Peer Gynt Suite by Greig)]
Marilyn Manson: Tainted Love, Personal Jesus

Oh, and Thin Lizzy: Whiskey in the Jar (ohhhh the irony ....)

Before I get jumped on I am wearing a thin lizzy hoodie: I also quite liked the cover of Whiskey in the Jar by Metallica.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭Eldarin

I actually quite liked Limp Bizkit's Version of Behind Blue Eye's. And thats saying something because I think that Fred Durst should do hard time in a Sodomising Camp.

Got to disagree , i taught Deaths version was much better. More power and energy in it.

As for bad , anyone that has tried to cover Aces High ( Iron Maiden ) , just can't beat the original

Vaders version of raining blood was enjoyable

Any of the covers by tori amos are godawful

Good covers: Most of Marilyn Manson's covers have been spot on, I Put A Spell On You is just wow! The Swans' cover of Black Eyed Dog (Nick Drake) is superior to the original which is saying a lot. NIN's cover of Metal (Gary Numan) is class as well. Oh and Nick Cave's Disco 2000 (Pulp)!

Bad covers: Rolf Harris Stairway to Heaven, it's bad but I like it :D. I can't remember if it was Soullfy or Sepultura but one of them did a woeful cover of Smoke On The Water. Laibach's cover of the Final Countdown blew donkey balls too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

anyone who tries to cover Stairway will fail. has anyone seen/heard Andy Dicks version of MM's Beautiful People.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭ionapaul

There's a cover of Final Countdown? That I have to hear...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭Oral Slang

Blind Guardians version of Mr. Sandman is class...

Ronan Keating, fairytale of new york. "you scumbag, you maggot, you're cheap and you're haggard" Everyone involved with that version should be tortured to death.

    Radiohead: Nobody Does it Better.

Foo Fighters - Stairway to Heaven

Also, Megadeth - Paranoid and Arch Enemy - Aces High - both great!

Good: Faith No More - War Pigs

Bad: Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love (Did he do that for "Not Another Teen Movie?" .... I say for the movie, I mean for the money)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Hendrix and Cash with All Along the Watchtower and Hurt, respectively, kick ass. There are too many bad covers to list but some would be Keating, Fairytale in New York; Limp Bizkit, Behind Blue Eyes. I quite like the Metallica version of Whiskey in the Jar. Nothing compared to the original of course but not bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Iced Earth - Burnin For You very good cover indeed.
