Looks like one up front with Gerrard just behind. Which worked well before. Hamman proberly blocking/holding role behind Alonso.

    I'll say a draw*

Alonso is injured by Lampard, replaced by Nunez on right side. Garcia moved upfront, Gerrard moves into the centre.

Its tight with only one shot on goal each, but the balance of play is more in Liverpools favour. Chelsea bursting foward when given the chance.

Alonso was caught from behind, he limped off for a moment came back on but could'nt continue. He'd be doubtful for Mondays game. The big suprise was that Biscan was'nt on the bench..does that mean he's on his way...?

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,390 ✭✭✭galwaydude

personally after watching biscan in the carling cup and a few other matches, i would have him over salif diao any day.
Southampton are after him, hope he doesnt leave though as hes a good player who never got a real chance and last season GH played him at center back for flukes safe.
What about this young kid john welsh, supposed to be another SG.H e should be getting more of a chance than these over payed foreigners like diao etc

Mike Riley is'nt having a good game....Liverpool giving Chelseas defense a hard time but they're working very hard to keep Liverpool out. Alonso is having an x-ray on fibula.

    Mike.

as against arsenal we are playing very well controlling the match just need that goal if we keep playing like this then its on the cards, definate penalty which is disapointing but that how it happens, just heard alsonso has a broken ankle F U C K

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

F-uck it Five Live has just said Alonso has had his ankle broken by Lampard! If Biscan is for sale Rafa better think again.

So does Riley only give penalties at Old Trafford??? Is it in his contract with the FA?

"Ball to hand" my arse

Gudjohnsen off Drogba on, then Duff off Cole on. Chelsea showing more threat, I suspect Pool will be hanging on until the end.

    Chelsea have scored.....Cole.

    Mike.

Awful match for the Pool, but Roman's Blue Army keep marching on. I feel btterly disappointed for Xabi Alonso, Liverpool's injury list gets longer and longer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    *sigh*

How many broken bones can one club cope with? I wondered if we really needed a striker when some more defenders would be a good idea but clearly we do. Garcia is a lightweight and Pongolle is best used as a sub.

Poxy ****ing goal. Liverpool played a great game bar taking the few chances that came along. Mike Riley once again had "Rilley vision" failing to see an obvious penalty. Wrong stadium for him perhaps. Alonso out now just ****ing great. How many of yer best players getting injured can ya handle tbh. Need a new striker which will happen soon who it is is anyones guess.

idont really have much to say i always go with the positives we were a team playing with alot of our best players out and we ran them ragged im very optimistic that with a few additions/returning from injury we will be a very good side although im very worried about a champions league match wihtout alonso

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I think this game showed how world class Chelseas attack really is, Barca are gona hammer em and I'm gona jump for joy when they do.

    ****ING DEFLECTIONS GRGRGRRG

Yet another serious injury for the pool an to a very importanat player. They have certainly had more than their share of serious injuries over the last few years. Losing alonso will not help their chance of a European place and the consequences of that scenario if it happens could be very serious for the club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,399 ✭✭✭✭Thanx 4 The Fish

Gerrard is out of it too which will be problenatic. Good result for Chelsea, what should have been a perfectly good penalty turned down, and a possible other that turned out to be a free. Once I saw Cole coming on I had a premonition that he would knock one in. Worse things happen, a couple of good results over the christmas and 6 from 9 is not too bad. Will see what happens when some more of the injuries return and we have somebody who can knock in a chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Mike Riley really is an awful referee.
Liverpool should feel hard done by, Chelsea getting all three points is harsh.
I hope Chelsea play like that against Barca.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭Gileadi

was a hard enough game for chelsea but the 5 man midfield cluttered up the space that duff and robben love abusing very well, luckily neither barca or even united in the league cup will go 5 in the middle (hopefully)

overall it was a scrappy game with no real chances but liverpool should really have gotten a point considering their possession and the fact it was in anfield

bring on barca when the team has more than 16 fit players, johnson is less than convincing at right back, ferreira is unsure what to do at times playing along the left and tiago needs abit more compition to keep him on form right now

terrible game by the ref also

I'm really annoyed after that, three decent penalty claims and not one given. Garcia has been doing me head in since he came back from injury also. He won't tackle, loses the ball constantly and then makes no effort to get it back when he does lose it - he's just too light weight and should have been replaced by Mellor with about 20 minutes to go:mad: Now Alonso's out injured, probably for the rest of the season too, how much bad luck can one team have :( Thank God it's January and we can get some re-inforcements in.

once again chelsea are lucky. they play average, look average and not for the 1st time their big players go hiding when up against the big sides but somehow they still pull out results.

its incredibly frustrating, especially for utd and arsenal fans to see chelsea grind out flukey results whilst not doing much.

the biggest plus out of this match is something ive noticed before when watching chelsea. shoot down the wing men, put them out of the game and chelsea look very flat and 2 dimensional, like the old liverpool if you like. duff and robben were hassled off the ball at cut off before they could get control of the ball by liverpool and as a result chelsea offered little to the front men.

hopefully, other teams will cop on to chelsea's weakness and force them to play through the centre, perhaps sacraficing a front man and going with 5 in midfield with 1 up front, like liverpool did today. chelsea really look average once duff and robben dont get into the game.

JT immense once again. Tiago had an awful game but will be replaced by Gerrard next season, its a done deal sorry Pool fans.

p.s. Duff had a bad game, Chelsea had a bad game.

I honastly don't beleive that Gerrard will go to Chelsea, if he does go. p.s. I want him to go to United :D

Duff worked hard but no end produce e.g the cross for Eidur, didn't look up at all.

It looks like Alonso's injury mightn't be as bad as I thought:

    From Liverpoolfc.tv:

RAFA - ALONSO OUT FOR SIX WEEKS

A disappointed Rafael Benitez says Liverpool will be without the services of midfield playmaker Xabi Alonso for five to six weeks with a broken ankle sustained in the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea.
It is a massive blow for Liverpool and the player who has settled into Premiership life well at Anfield.

Benitez said: "Unfortunately we have lost Xabi for five to six weeks and it is a big blow for us."

When asked after the game if the injury to Alonso will mean he will be searching for a replacement in January Benitez was keeping his cards close to his chest.

Benitez said: "We will see. At this moment I am only concentrating on the next game which is Norwich. We have a good squad so we have players who can come into midfield."

The handshake with Jose says it all really but Ian Mcenry a sports journalist said on CFC TV that the deal is done .

Liverpool were absolutly robbed. Riley is a terrible referee who already proved it at Arsenal v Man United and he should never be allowed to referee a professional game again. Chelsea were exceptionally lucky, but that's the kind of luck you need to win leagues.

Thought Lampard's foul on Alonso was disgraceful too, but because he's the current darling of the British media, you won't hear anything about it tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭Jivin Turkey

Liverpool were definately unlucky. Again a bad referees decision has gone against them in a game that they have lost. At least we can sit in hope that all this will even out by the end of the season ;)

But this is why I (and many others) currently think that Chelsea a the team to beat.

They didnt play well, but then again had Robben scored (or should I say Dudek not magnificantly saved) that one on one early in the first half it could have been a different game.

They didnt play well, yet managed to take three points from a team with one of the best (2nd to United only?) home records in the league, becoming only the second team to shut them out there this season.

They didnt play well, but they have game breakers that can come off the bench and win games when the starting XI are not doing the business.

They didnt play well, and have not done particularly so over the Christmas period, yet have still picked up maximum points, from three difficult games, without conceeding a goal.

I would be worried watching this type of performance if I was a United or Arsenal fan. This is the type of thing that will win them the league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I know you always here that if a team plays crap and still gets the win then they are a championship team, but normally that applies to a team breaking away and getting a goal just by skill, Chelsea just got lucky.

Two possible penos and a deflection to win it.
Team to beat, obviously, they are 9 points ahead :)
Still Man Utd for the league, Fa Cup, and Champions League :)

Just caught the highlights on RTE 2, Carras volley was nearly very nice indeed! Also Traore showed some nice touches pity he's not a striker though.
Finally Riley, he saw the handball, puts the whistle to his mouth and then...bottles it.

You just don't quit do you , the chances of that happening are about the same as a side currently not in the top 3 winning the league .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

It's all about belief my friend, all of it. If you believe enough it will happen :)

    p.s.

    Paddypower.com

    Odds for united on treble:
    League : 15-2
    FA Cup : 5-1
    CL : 9-1

    337.5 - 1

    Odds for
    Liverpool 150 - 1
    Everton 250 - 1

    I guess you're right :D

When they played they were poor, two goals from set pieces and nothing created from open play. If Henry put that last chance away Arsenal would have very deservedly won. I didn’t see the united game so I cannot comment.

Liverpool were very unlucky to lose and they lost big in Alonso as well who is a fantastic player. If they had Baros playing that game things might have been different. Gray is right in saying that Liverpool are progressing really well and when they get their strikers back they’ll be a real force in the prem.

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,075 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

Only one straw aye... Well we are still winning our games in the Prem, we are still in the FA cup, and we have a hard game in the CL but we are still ivolved. As long as we are in these comp's we have as good a chance as any of winning them.

As regards the prem, well yes we are playing catch up, but I can tell you that there are still plenty of games left and if by chance the chelski do drop points we will be waiting to pounce.

As pointed out by PHB, its all about belief. If liverpool fans stopped feeling sorry for themselves and got on with supporting their team, I would have more respect for them. We all have to make do with injuries, look at us today, missing 4 of our 5 strikers(all be it one due to an act of stupidy),but do you hear all us Man U supporters complaining.

Looking forward to Sat 15th Jan by the way.

Chelsea are in all the competition that Man United are in and seeing their 9 points ahead in the Premiership they would have a better chance of winning that and all 3 tournaments . (they've a really good chance of winning the league cup ,too)

Liverpool fans feeling sorry for themselves has nothing to do with football . They may moan about the club a lot but this Is mainly down to them being passionate supporters , possibly the most passionate of any club .

Do I hear all Man U supporters complaining ? , well ive never been to China , but the ones I know yes , they beleive Chelsea will win the league and they will finnish second .(thats the majority anyway) .

Remember how pathetic Liverpool fans sounded when they beleived they were gonna win the league in the nineties(exlude early ninties) , well thats Man United fans now :D .

Liverpool have as much support in the far east now by the way. The two most supported clubs here in Ireland are Man U and Liverpool, in what order I cant tell you. But you are probably aware of that.

And on the subject of Liverpool fans, some of them still sound pathetic. I work with liverpool fans who seriously think that liverpool will win the Champions League.

well liverpool's performances against big teams have been excellent we ran both arsenal and chelsea ragged granted we lost the later but wihtout baros, cisse, alonso, kewell, josemi, smicer all would be in with a first team shout many are definate 1st team starters.
