Ok I'm aware these aren't good for you but.....

Are they bad because they're carbonated *or* because of their high chance of being full of sugar?

I find fizzy drinks quite refreshing, much more so than still ones, so would sparkling water mixed with sugar free dilutable drink thing be ok? or say riverrock flavoured waters that just have sweeteners?

Yeah the problem is the sugar not the carbonation. I'm not quite sure about Riverrock waters, they have aspartame(Nutrisweet) which is quite poisonous, but then again it's also in things like Lucozade sport and stuff yet people don't seem to mind. Diet Club Orange is quite good as it uses non-aspartame sweetener and has a small bit of natural orange juice. Sparkling water with sugar-free dilutable drink would be okay as well, if you check the labels there's quite a few that don't contain aspartame.

what sort of way is aspartame posoinous? find that disturbing i always go for aspartame ahead of sugar baed stuff, what sweeteners are ok?

Nutrisweet is in every softdrink bar 7up.
Its in diet drinks in very large quantities and the stuff is bloody leathal.

Diet 7up contains it as well. The only commonly available diet drinks not to contain it are Diet Club Orange/Lemon, they contain sucralose which is okay. Do a search for aspartame on google. It's worse when taken on an empty stomach as it brings on a state of hypoglycameia as well as the usual effects.

Here is a list of side effects (I've put asterisks next to the ones I can testify to)

blindness in one or both eyes

    hives
aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma

    loss of control of diabetes
    menstrual changes
marked thinning or loss of hair

    severe PMS

    Other
frequency of voiding and burning during urination
excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
    increased susceptibility to infection

Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all
    death
    irreversible brain damage
    birth defects, including mental retardation
    peptic ulcers
*aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
    hyperactivity in children
    severe depression

How is Aspartame legal if it's that bad for you?

I'd imagine the soft drinks companies have a lot of lobbying power. Aspartame was the only real alternative after they were forced to put warning labels on saccharin drinks. The EU has been pushing for ages to make it illegal, but it's a big thing to remove all diet drinks from shelves. There might be a chance for it to be made illegal now that soft drink companies have sucralose (Splenda) to turn to. Sucralose tastes better too. Coca Cola use it in Diet Coke in some countries but not Ireland/UK. The fact that aspartame is addictive may help that decision somewhat.

I drink Pepsi Max which has no sugar but has Aspartame. Would it be healthier to drink normal Pepsi than Pepsi Max?

Yeah I feel like smacking the TV when those "Frosties, Coco pops etc. are healthy" ads come on. I can just picture a mother pouring a bag of sugar down her child's throat, smiling for the camera and saying "It's so low in fat!"

Totally agree - you need water not more chemicals in your system. Artificial sweeteners cause all sort of long term problems and chronic conditions. The big producer - Monsanto, are the same people behind genetically modified foods. It is basically an excitotoxin - excites or stimulates neural cells to death.
These companies have created a whole new industry in the last 20 years - the 'Low Fat' and 'Sugar free' industry!! The irony of it all is that it increases your desire for sweet and sugary foods even more!
    Water, water, water.

That's not as bad as the effect that the dihydrogen monoxide they put into it can have. The side effects of prolonged dihydrogen monoxide ingestion include:

    # Excessive sweating
    # Excessive urination
    # Bloated feeling
    # Nausea
    # Vomiting
    # Electrolyte imbalance
    # Hyponatremia (serum hypotonicity)
    # Dangerously imbalanced levels of ECF and ICF in the blood
    # Degeneration of sodium homeostasis
