Hm, ok...Is anyone here listening to such music?...I hope, yes.

    Some questions:
1)Any specialized (in these styles) shops, where I can buy music cds. (dublin)

    2) Are there any bands?...Just interested to listen to anything in reality...

I know pretty much nothing about death but I like black. Apart from Sound Cellar I don't know where you can buy them. Tower are usually quite good though. Good bands....well aside from Emperor, Darkthrone, Mayhem etc. other good ones are Hecate Enthroned and Behemoth. Zyklon are also good but they're not strictly black. And if you're looking for something with more keyboard poncerey and top hats try Dimmu Borgir. Check out Black Metal Radio online where you can listen to loads of them and find ones you like.
    Enjoy!

P.S. Marduk aren't half as good as they're cracked up to be.

    1) Thanks, but when i was last time in tower i didnt find some bands like gorgoroth, burzum, amon amarth...

2)I didnt mean those popular worldwide bands!...I know them. I meant _irish_ black/death bands. Underground, not famous, any...

I think I saw Burzum in HMV once....but yeah you have a point. Go to central Europe and buy around twenty of them for fifty euro. Ireland smells when it comes to CDs. Sol Axis are the only good Irish BM band I know of but there are probably others. Maniac Butcher are very good. They're from eastern Europe somewhere. They have great covers that are even cheesier than Immortals.

so..what would you call them, then?

To me they'd both be Hardcore bands. Sorry for being pernickity by the way.

Go to Sound Cellar for all your metal needs.

If you like Burzum, try the Swans early stuff. The first couple of Burzum albums remind me of Swans stuff, check out Greed/Holy Money, Filth and Public Castration Is A Good Idea. They're found in the rock and pop section of Tower but they're far from rock and pop. Very very heavy and very very unpleasent.

:) ah..i see...well i guess you're right then...i think i'm not quite up to date with all the technical terms...nu-metal, hardcore, metalcore...i keep simplistic and call everything..heavy, black or death metal...*lol* hm...maybe i should update tho...

Try Abaddon Incarnate. Unbelievable stuff..... Seen these guys in Limerick a couple o times.

whatever happened to arcane sun? they were wicked... saw them with primordial and the late lamented [well.. by me anyway] dreamsfear in slattery's years ago...

do you guys take all the "evil satanic anger" stuff seriously? i always find it really hard not to burst out laughing when i hear stuff like dimmu borgir or cradle of filth...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭Sonic Titan

Black Metal is an awesome Metal force. I listen to lots of different Metal and Black has to be one of the best genres. I know the image of the bands can be hard to take but you should look past the image and focus on the music. After all, Metal is not about Image but the power of the Music.

Personally, I think you have to take the likes of Dimmu with a sense of tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top overstatement. This is in fact a band who use an extreme amount of orchestrations, so subtlety isn't really in their vocabulary really.

To be honest, I don't buy into any of the so-called 'Anger' in metal.

That's absolute horse****. Are you saying that Arcturus sound like everything else? Or for that matter, Enslaved?

You sound like you just plain don't know what you're talking about. Which bands have you heard?

Isn't melodic death metal a bit of an oxymoron? I always thought death metal was the antithesis of melody

I Listen to a bit of Cannibal corpse and Death.
I wouldn't go lookin for it.

Not really, check out some bands like At The Gates, Arch Enemy, In Flames (early stuff) and while they're fairly harsh in their style, there's plenty of melody there.

i'd say it totally depends on the perspective...from my experience: when you're into that kind of music you begin discover all its beautiful melodic components...but if you generally hear 'lighter' stuff it all sounds like noice to you..

my absolute fav is naglfar...simply amazing!
    (not irish tho...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I can't really get into a lot of death metal so I suppose that doesn't help me. And the bands that Karl listed as death metal I thought were just regular heavy metal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44 Sheol

oh..uhm..and naglfar is actually black metal...with death influences or something..oh nevermind...

I don't know what I'm talking about, HORSE**** dude. I've been listening to and collecting all types of death and black for the last 15 years as well as playing this type of music for years !!

I was into enslaved, Arcturus, Immortal back in the day, before it was fashionable and every little dick was going round wearing immortal, emperor shirts. Being a musician, I can destinguish between a band that can properly play their instruments and those that can't, and just keep repeating themselves album after album.

Which band's have I heard ??? Have you got a couple of hours, I heard possibly every poxy black and death band on the planet, from tape trading years and years ago, boxes and boxes of old demos, inc Arturus, Immortal, and Enslaved and hundreds and hundreds of cd's, 7" & 12" albums, ep's blah blah blah.

You name it, I've heard it !!!!!!!!!!!!

Notice all the dudes that thought that was funny, probably dont play anything except with themselves!!!!

You'll never know what it's like to play that sort of music, I kinda feel sorry for ye, keep listening, cos thats all you'll ever be able to do. !!!

    ShadowFax wrote:

No, let me explain why it's funny.
You come in here, make some grand statements, then tell me to take up an instrument without any knowledge of me, nor what instruments I can play or how well I can play them. Now that alone is a pretty silly thing to do, simply because it's ignorant to make such assumptions about people, but the funny part is how wrong your assumption is. Now I'm certainly not one to blow my own horn, but just peeking into the instruments board you can see just how much I'm into the playing end of music.

And even moreso funny that you say "All the dudes who thought it was funny probably don't play anything" yet, who else thought it was funny? One of the best guitarists boards has to offer. :D

So that's your "End Of Discussion" for you.

I'd love to hear your logic behind this statement. Now, I'm not a death/black metal fan at all. I'll gladly admit that. But I do play a lot of guitar and some bass and I enjoy some of the guitarists in the black/death metal scene.

That said, I still find this thread damn funny. This sort of stuff can't be scripted!!!

Still on our little trip are we?

Just because you listen to wanky toneless crap doesn't mean that is all there is. How do we know you dont just chug on the E string for a while and hamfist out a few solos with the treble turned up full.

Back it up, or shut up.

If by hearing one black metal band you've heard them all, why bother collecting that mass of recordings? When I don't think much of a type of music I just don't get any more. Or did you all of a sudden mature after 15 years and couldn't listen to the music anymore? (Although from your posts I see no sign of maturity)

    That's cool so.

As for what black/death I'd listen to, I've simply not the time to get into the bulk of it, I listen to a LOT of different stuff, not just in aforementioned genres.

Suffice to say here's a few favorite bands of said genres I'm a fan of:

    Opeth
    Death
    Emperor
    Enslaved
    Sigh
    Morbid Angel
    Behemoth
    Carcass
    Immortal

    You get the idea.

    Immortal

Death rock big time, into early emperor, early enslaved, Morid Angel are intense, love carcass, seen em in dublin sometime in early 90's, kick ass gig, into early immortal.

    Some of the **** I'd listen too would be;

    Arch Enemy,
    In Flames,
    Dark Tranquillity,
Primordial, into alot of irish bands,
    At the Gates,
    Autopsy, early stuff
    Napalm Death, early
    Bolt Thrower, early
    Death,
    Deicide,
    My dying bride,
    Dismember
    Entombed, early
    Paradise Lost
    Vader
    Six Feet Under
    Pestilence
    Opeth, early
    Nile,
    Obituary, early,
    Carcass
    Katatonia
    Amorphis, kick ass
    Deranged
    Dimmu Borgir
    NightWish
    Venom,
    Therion

plus hundreds more. Into alot of underground bands, some by now defunct, other with crappy little deals, some are alot better than bands currently with deals !!

Paradise lost, there's a band you don't hear mentioned often. Shame really because their old stuff is deadly. Not so hot on their latter days though.

hell yeah! amorphis are deadly!! but mainly the old stuff..'a tale from a thousand lakes' was their best album i'd say. 'far from the sun' took a while to get used to..more rock than metal...but you gotta give them credit for the lyrics..great stuff!

was lucky enough to see them last summer, before pasi left...don't think they'll be the same without him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭ShadowFax

have to agree Paradise Lost kick ass, there latest stuff is fairly ****. Seen em live in 90's in dublin around ICON, excellent.

Think, Shades of God or Gothic was their best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

    Gothic would be my choice

Have to concur about Paradise Lost, I was quite the fan years ago, but I saw them live there two years ago, and they were definetly lacking.
