Looking to buy a new 42inch Plasma TV. Only problem is that its hard to decide which gives you the best bang for your buck without trapsing around every shop in the country.

Can anyone tell me which model is the best for the price and where it is to be got for that price?

Ideally it will have no problems when sky go to HDTV either.

Budget is about €3000 - €4000 but cheaper if possible.
    Thanks Guys.

Seen the 1st generation LG in Power city for 2599 (there is a 2nd gen one out now)
Currys also have the LG one for 2700

Check out Currys in Liffey Valley they have about 7 models.

    Check reviews on them 1st.

Also check out the Philips store on the corner of Dame street and South Great Georges street. They had one model playing the Shrek DVD a few weeks ago. It was quite simply stunning !

A friend of mine tried out both the LG one and another by Visual Innovations, both in Richer Sounds in Belfast and he much preferred the Visual Innovations one.

Thats where i got the idea :)

Trying to see if there are better value ones first though.
And i'll wait til the Jan sales too.

Harvey Norman have a sale on them now. Really cheap but they are all ex-display models and i dont want a plasma tv thats been on 12 hours a day for the last 6 months.

I've found Harvey Norman is more expensive for plasma screens than most other places.

I was in the sony centre today looking at the ke42m1. Its €3800 and you get a free DVD recorder (rdr GX300). Not a bad deal

    Hi all...

There are a few things to consider when buying a plasma. I run a small biz, and part of what I do is plasma screen installations. Most plasma screens are around the same price. You need to be caredul - brackets or stands and speakers are hardly ever included in the price.

If price is the deciding factor - I would go with a Samsung or LG - lower end of the market. Be careful of the warranty given - most consumer models - i.e. those with TV tuners carry a 12 month warranty . Business models do not have tv tuners (they are purchased separate), but carry a 24 or 36 month warranty. It could pay for itself as cost of repair can work out very costly £600 stg for the cheapest part and service.

My preference at the moment are the NEC plasmas.

If anyone is interested, drop me a mail. I can almost certainly beat prices for dixons and harvey norman.

After much consideration i'm leaning towards the philips 37PF9986 LCD TV at the moment. But prices will have a lot to do with it in the sale after Christmas. This is currently €3999 in the Philips shop on Grafton street. Reviews seem very good.
Only thing i'm worried about is that a 1 year warrenty on a piece of kit that costs €4000 is a bit skimpy.

The reason i'm going with the LCD is that i was looking at a plasma in eats and noticed marks on the screen. The guy in Peats told me it was just dirt, but then i noticed that the 'Dirt' was letters and logos burned ionto the screen.

Apparently Plasma's aren't the way to go, you're better off investing in a good LCD. Plasma's depreciate by £40 Sterling a day. We have a £5000 one in work at the bbc, it's only a few months old and it's already nackered. Peak whites are showing pink... there's a name for that, can't remember.

    Hi,

First of all do not go buy anyone's reccomendation the prrof is always buy looking at them yourself in a shop and comparing them to your needs. If you go to www.avforums.com this site will give you all the info and background you need on what each plasma has to offer. The consencus is that the Pansonic and Pioneer plasma screens seem to perform best overall. Anyway all the best with your decision I am still trying to make mine....

try richer sounds in belfast, they will sell u a lg plasma for about 2250 (the latest one) and offer a 3 year warrenty for 10%.power city are 2850 for this also no warranty upgrade available ,they also do panasonic
do not buy any goodmans/daewoo/ any unknown brand, there are reasons for this do a search.the generic panels are made in china, and the known defect rate at 3 years is 10%. the pioneer, panasonics, etc have a 3% defect rate. i think ur better hiring a van for the day to pick up the plasma in belfast with 3year warrenty.
also if going with the lg ensure it has the latest firmware, or else there will be problems with settings disappearing. again a search on avforums showed the lgs to be reliable apart from this problem.
good advice about avforums, they have alot of useful info.
bear in mind if u go for the panasonic, u will need a scart board as it doesnt even come with any connectors ortuner board or anything. the lg comes with everything.
plasmas have better picture quality over lcd. the reason is the backlight behind the lcd can never truely be masked to show a true black.
however lcds use less electricity so run cooler so perhaps longer life? also the tube behind an lcd can be replaced whereas plasmas are not repairable.
whatever u do ensure the wall bracket is secured to the timber behind the partition or ur plasma may fall off and take the plasterboard with it.

oh and if u transport the plasma make sure it is vertically, this is why u need a van. check the glass is intact in richer sounds before transporting it. if it is cracked no warrenty will apply. repack it carefully and transport it vertically on a soft duvet.

What makes a good plasma?Would the following spec be classed as good, bad or standard?

I am also considering buying one after xmas possible this unit.

    Kind regds kieran

read above -do not buy a generic panel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

the lg or pana pw6 are the cheapest you are going to get. there are no bargains in plasmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭kmb

perphaps,But my question was does this have better features or extras that the other ones dont.
And it can be bought trade which make close enough to the panasonic on cost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

its not about features. its about picture quality, and long term reliability. at the end of the day they arent making the plasmas they are buying them off a generic manufacturer. and as ive suggested it took lg even a long time to sort out a common fault. sure if they give you a 3 year warranty its grand but they wont. and if it breaks at the end of year 1 youl throw it in the bin. even if it breaks within a year how do u know theyl b around to take it back?

the pioneers/ panasonics and even lgs are proven reliable. they are used the length and breth of the uk in supermarkets, motorway services and airports running 24/7 for years at a time. anyone who says plasmas arent any good doesnt know what there talking about. also screen burn is becoming a thing of the past with the new smart technology. why do you want to buy something unproven. ive looked into it and the cheapest really is richer sounds. buy a pana pw6 for 2250+225 for the warrenty and hire a van for the day to bring it down. alternatively buy the lg, for the same ,this is more tv like in that it has build in scart ports, a tv tuner and teletext. the pana has none of these.

if u cant afford 2500 for a tv basically u cant afford a plasma (yet). talking about sales is pointless as this is the price.

the other options are the new dlp tvs. i was very impressed by one i saw. however they contain a moving motorised colour wheel and also a bulb that need replacing every year or so at a cost of 400. if the motor gos ur screwed as well.

lcds are much dearer than equivelent sized plasmas and arent an option yet at 42inches.
the final point is the bigger your screen the more it will show up crap sources like cablelink. u need sky at least for them to look good. dvds look amazing but again u need a good dvd player. vcr playback will not look good at all. crt tvs look better if you just want to watch the cable.

Why not try richer sounds in Dublin? I mean why drive to Belfast and go through all the hassle of renting a van if you can get the same thing here?

They have the 42" Panasonic plasma (PW6) for 1899 euro!
Even Lidl and Aldi would have a hard time beating that offer, not to mention that they only sell cheap chinese electronics.

Slightly off topic (as some of the previous was as well), but i remember another post a while ago where some guy wanted advice about picking a dvd player for his new plasma screen. One reply said that is your using a plasma/lcd screen, that you should have a dvd player with component output.

Now i know your bog standard scart, av, and s-video, but could somebody shed some light on what component is?

Looks good, the scart card is a further €220. Is there any other way of connecting a dvd to it using just the VGA that comes with it. Like a scart-VGA cable or something?

    Thanks peoples,
In the end i went for the Philips 37inch LCD. Bought it in Arnotts for €3999 and hope to have it delivered next week. Comes with speakers and wallmount which it seems you have to pay for seperately with plasmas.
The display price was €4500 so i haggled and got it cheaper. The Price in the Philips shop on georges street is €4999.

Did you actually read any of this thread? That model is on sale for less than 1940 delivered. I think a stand and tv tuner can be got for well under 1060 and you get warranty

WOW! €1900 for a 42" plasma. This seems too good to be true.Is it the Panasonic TH42PW6B any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

i dont reakon ud get a pw6 for 1900 euro.cheapest would be 1450 stg= 2100 euro+200 for scart bord. tuners are dear around 500 or 600 so around 2800+150 delivery =3000. however my reason for recommending richer sounds is for 10% u get a 3 year warrwnty. every one else in uk wants 35% for 3 year warrenty.
i saw a nice samsung today in dixons for 2400,in the square with tuner, surround speakers and scart/ compostite board. looked very nice. not too bad a price BUT what do u do with it if it stops after 12months? throw it out and buy another?

It gets great reviews on sites and forums. Can't you just buy a stand-alone dvd-recorder and use it instead of a €500-600 TV tuner board?

i think u have more money than sense this was definately a bad deal. when u can buy a plasma for half that and bigger as well. also its definately not an investment, within 1 year they will b down to plasma prices.
    good luck with it anyway

Had about €3500 worth of Arnotts vouchers for wedding presents and to be honest the LCD seemed like the best option.
DVI input HDTV ready and so many of the plasmas i looked at had some sort of burn in when i looked closely at them in the shops.
A friend has a pw6 of which he said, and this was what decided on the LCD for me "After watching Sky news for an hour or two, when you change channel you can see the sky news logo for hours on other channels when the screen goes black or light."

I'm very happy with the LCD, picture is perfect.

Just wondering what are people's opinions of the 37PF9986 now that they have it for a while. I am considering one in the near future and would like to know what people think and would they recommend it. Where is the cheapest place to buy right now and what is it going for?

    I'm really happy with it.
The only gripes i have are that there is no on screen volume bar that i can find and the auto adjustment mode widens the whole screen and stretches the sides.

    Other than that, fantastic TV
