I think it was only a matter of time considering how profile it had become. There was a study published this week on the Reg about BitTorrent and it referred mainly to suprnova. Aside from the technical issues, that kind of noteriety would have had the vultures circling even quicker.

It seems to be working OK.

Where are you guys reading of it's demise?

Well, it's been giving me the "No known mirror" error all day, but I guessed that it was just a usual temporarly fault...
I'd like to know where this has been published...

The jig is up for now anyway.

sloncek was working on his exeem program which should be coming out very soon I'd say. It was expected to replaced suprnova anyway. That will be much harder for the MPAA to shut down.

Come to think of it, I haven't been able to get into http://torrent.youceff.com/ all day either.
    Hmmm.

    Greetings everybody,

As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this site up!
But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that we all know it.
We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links.
We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything.

Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or something else, by uploading and seeding files, by helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the word about SuprNova.org.
It is a sad day for all of us!

Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get the latest news on what is happening and if there is anything new to report on.

As we wish to maintain the nice comunity that we created, we are keppig forums and irc servers open.

    Thank you all and Goodbye!
sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team

Does anyone know the address to the suprnova forums? Looks like they forgot to leave a link to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

dammit. I was only grabbing stuff off there a couple of hours ago. :(

would I be able to post a link to a list of torrent sites or not? it's not even a torrent site, just somewhere that lists a lot of them.

not sure if that falls outside normal posting rules though. i.e. posting a link to a site that has links to sites that may or may not carry possible pirated material.

After a quick look - there's not a lot of other sites like suprnova anywhere, apart from that one I mentioned earlier..
After seeing what a success it was, I'm sure somebody else somewhere will come up with something along the same lines. Hopefully anyway.
I guess all it takes is money and mirrors to keep the site up.

There are at least two (probably shouldn't say here), which were becoming better than Suprnova anyway.

Youceff was raided by the French police last week. (see here or Google's cache )

    torrent sites?

Well I don't think I particularily want to post any here, but I will say life doesn't begin and end with bittorrent. There are plenty of other options out there.

Not to the average DSL user though right? I mean I have tried many a time using the added benefits of IRC as they say, but I do not have a clue how to do it properly or find rooms where they are not acting anal because I do not have anything as of yet.

Actually on second thought, can ya pm me and give me some tips?

we need to find some sort of torrentreactor mushc like a nuclear reactor but for torrents "hinthint"...

omg is that a 'file' in my 'soup' ? "hinthint"

Theres a good few out there but suprnova was my favourite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,865 ✭✭✭Syth

    :(

But it can't be stopped. They shut down Napster, but people found new ways. Likewise here.

Well SuprNova just had links to all the trackers, which were torrent files. ie their filetype was torrent. I wish there was a way of searching the internet. :( Especially if you could specify the filetype of the results. Something like "filetype:torrent". If only...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 703 ✭✭✭SolarNexus

I'm surprised suprnova wasn't shut down ealier, damn place was notorious.

If only there was such a thing as a legitimate torrent server, but nah... not in this climate and as such we'll be seeing shutdowns left and right.

It wont end here though, people have been bitten by the 'share bug' and they will find other means to share, no matter what people think

might not be as easy but there is always irc thats lasted through the whole napster/kazaa/torrent phase without any hassle. There are even sites you can use to search irc from and they open the servers in mirc for you and all you have to do is paste the dcc request into. Its never going to be as easy as torrents but its never going to stop, viva la warez.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭radiospan

Zeropaid says this in their bit about SN closing:
"While there are still some torrent sites left I am sorry to say kids that the death of this generation of P2P is now imminent."
This is ridiculous. The bad points about BitTorrent were its reliablity on websites and trackers (ie- centralisation), and also it's lack of privacy (it's easy to see which IP's are using it). The closing of Suprnova could be the kick up the ass that Bittorrent needs. Hopefully eXeem will decentralize BT, and the Bittorrent network will have no choice but to evolve and improve.

If you remember the closing of Napster, this was called "the end of P2P" at the time, but in reality it turned out to be the catalyst for all kinds of new innovations in P2P programs (decentralisation, multi-source downloading, etc..) Hopefully today's news will have the same effect and another generation of P2P is just around the corner.

    Other sites that are down/dead!
    Youceff Torrents
    Phoenix Torrents
    and apparently Torrentreacter

I completely stopped using suprnova ages ago for getting Linux ISO's ;)
Speeds were slow because it was only full of leeching f*ckers that never seeded like they should have.

Anyone else remember when Donkax went down? Same thing here, a new site took its mantle. As always, I find newsgroups the best (unless you have access to some private ftp sites). IRC is ok, but can require queueing. Suprnova peaked a long time ago, it has since become redundant in the face of better organised, less-bandwidth intensive sites.

I don't think we need to list all the sites here or tell people how to get their warez - use google - there's plenty of instructions out there.

We certainly shouldn't be listing any sites so people can get there new warez fix

Sites listed here should only be part of the news that BT sites are dead, its interesting for us all to know about them.
    :)
