The line up was pretty crap. I wouldn't have wasted my money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭p.pete

Pretty poor - what's going on with ENTS? Thought there was more students in the college, surely they can organis better funding and better events?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

It's not looking good. I thought things might pick up after the last Ents officer disappeared..... I'm not sure about the quality of the events themselves, but the promotion for them is pretty sparse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I think the incentive isn't there to go.

I commute every day and I'd rather go home or go into the city centre than spend money on an event in DCU with bands and DJs I wouldn't normally spend money on or time listening to.

I reckon DCU are keeping the likes of Paddy Casey in a job! And the Revs? Gimme a break!

Ents are still a joke. They don't really appeal to everyone there needs to be a big improvement before stuff like this stops happening.

I wudda gone just for the craic... i hate the revs and im hardly a big fan of abbamania but it woulda been a bit of fun.

Sad though cos there were loooooads of people going to buy their tickets tomorrow...

    Two rubbish acts indeed...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Yeah, the whole strummy, acoustic singer/songwriter rubbish is getting far too much of an airing. Although when you look at it, security for Paddy Casey is probably cheaper than security for say.....Blood Or Whiskey ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Only coz people really couldn't give a toss about Paddy Casey and he doesn't arouse any emotion other than boredom!

I'd prefer the likes of the Classic Beatles/ABBAmania to Paddy Casey and the Revs, at least they're a bit of fun.

We need good bands! Surely they can arrange to book them in advance and for a decent fee.

I went to the Christmas Ball last year and it waqs fairly dull ... waste of a tenner. Was at the freshers ball this year which was also a bit of a damp squib.

First Freshers Ball with Australian Nirvana and Turn was pretty good (Wasn't around for Aslan ... long story!)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

I thought Australian Nirvana were bloody awful, but it was a good oul night. I think the only way to get better bands is to actually mail your man with suggestiuons. Sitting here bitching about it where he can't see we're not happy, isn't gonna work too well I dont think.

    He probably likes Whelans ;)

Ah Aussie Nirvana were awful, but at least you could act the maggot while watching them.

Did they not read people's replies to the ents. questionaire that was sent out before the semester started?

I don't see the ents. changing before I leave DCU, they were notoriously bad before I started and from what I've experienced, little has changed.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    Petition to the S.U.?
You have to ask yourself tho, if you were Ents. officer how would you make improvements? There has to be more student participation I think. Instead of handing us these events on a plate, there should be some sort of motivation to actually take part/get envolved. And that extra credit's for extra-cirricular activity is complete and utter bullshíte. If people dont want to contribute for the benefit of others instead of their own cause, it's hardly all that heartfelt....or something.

There shud be a feedback book in the hub I think, where you can comment on events/suggest acts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Aye, there's not enough place for feedback.

Its quite obvious that some people are only on committees etc. to get extra credits. Having been on a committee for over two years now I've seen enough to believe this.

I would gladly get involved in organising ents. if I felt my contribution would be welcomed.

I feel however that maybe my musical tastes and what I constitute as fun and entertaining might not appeal to the majority of students and lets face it they're the ones who'll be buying the tickets.

It's incredibly difficult to change a system from the bottom up.

they sent around the SU survey form today. stick yer name and all in the comments and ask them what's the story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

    Done already :)
Wonder if this one will make a difference ...

    *holds breath*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 635 ✭✭✭johnor

aye for me its not even the quality of the acts.....sometimes when u see the same acts over and over and over being advertised for different events u begin to realise what a joke the events are there....like the chilis tribute must have played dcu, 5 or 6 times over the last two years. I think there are improvements being made, i doubt there was major interest in seeing the revs. Wouldnt mind a bit of diversity too....some hiphop acts would be good from my point of view, cant see lots of other students goin to a hip hop gig tho! if they started getting in decent irish bands that have signles/albums on the way out and wnat to promote them...surely they wouldnt have to pay them that much?? i dunno the in's and outs of it tbh.

Improvements from last yr: Those monday nights with Kittser, Dara o brien and a few other comedians, good idea people would like them....
i have mates in ucd, ucd get bands like the complete stone roses, which are class, great for getting a crowd going.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

i bought my ticket about 2 hours before the announcement it was cancelled.

The number on it was 411... so there weren't that many people going

BUT the amount of people I know planning on buying there tickets this morning was huge...

The SU should allow people to suggest who plays at events. Didn't UCD have someone huge like Ash or someone this year

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Well if anyone wants to get together and start some kind of group to organize gigs/event in the hub or wherever independant of the Ents officer, I'd be more than willing to give it a go. I know quite a few bands from around the place who are damn good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I'd love to do something like that!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Do ya think we'd be able to starta club/soc for events this late in the year? Would there even be any chance that it would be accepted as a valid association? We could just have something where the members of the club/soc get concessions into the gigs we run. Say €2 for members and €4 for non-members. As for hip-hop, I wouldnt be into it, but I think there are a few groups around the place. Ugly Duckling are always around too.........I think.

I don't see why it wouldn't be accepted this time of the year.

We re-established the women's rugby club....

*listens for the pitter patter of Zyox' feet*

... Late in the year last year and there was no problem. There's just some criterea for the number of members you need in order for it to be considered a club ... something around 20 methinks.

I'd be well up for it though if it goes ahead!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Here's a list of acts I'd like to get. Any others anyone would want? A website would be handy to add to the list..

Wouldn't mind seeing any of those bands.

Will have a think about what other ones might be good.

Err... is what someone on irc said last night about the revs playing spirit the same night they were supposed to be in the hub true?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I think they played Spirit on Wednesday.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Just outta sheer curiosity, where did mick, the previous ents officer, disappear to? Did he get fed up of the job or did he get the boot? On my year abroad at the mo, so he could still be around for all i know. But i have to agree that the line up for the xmas ball was a little disappointing and i probably wouldnt have bought a ticket.

Although i agree that paddy casey may cause a somewhat depressing atmospere, that doesnt explain how there were plenty of people at the gig. And contrary to some peoples views he has a 'few' upbeat tunes hehe!

I distinctly remember going to see Mundy, and the robbie and kylie tribute, both of which i enjoyed. Although i always noticed that the place was rarely full! The true mundy fans would be at the very front singing their hearts out, whereas a large part of the others just chatted amongst themselves as if it was just background music. and the rest of the hall was either empty or taken up by a few literally legless people sitting on the floor!

tbh I didn't care who was playing... I just wanted a good fun night out..

    :(

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Dunno, if he quit or was sacked. not a moment to soon in my opinion. He's gone anyway...I think Kevin Delany's the new guy's name. Gotta start telling him some acts to look out for.

Me too. I go to most of the balls and I rarely bother going over to listen to the bands. All I want is a big crowd in the old bar and a half decent dj.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

That's the thing though, why can't we get a decent DJ instead of a "half decent" one?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 4,436 Mod ✭✭✭✭Suaimhneach

I'd love to see something done about it. I'd join that soc, it kinda bugs me that UCD had Rodrigez y Gabriela and we get The Revs.

I think if we could create a college "spirit" then taht could make all the diffrence.

Also, I think if the SU arrange something, they should have each individual club and soc promote it for the college, rather than them only promoting their own events. If there is one big event on, and all clubs and socs promote it, and only half the people go, the old bar is full.

Although I'm not running any club or soc, so getting people to do that might be too demanding.

I dunno, but I'd like to see something done bout it.

Well, are you saying thats a good thing or a bad thing. Some people like em ya know, but then others depise em!

Ash were in Queens as well and my mate was in heaven...!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

    good thing!

They actually get someone who has fans... we get the revs rolleyes.gif

Actually we didn't EVEN get the revs...

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 4,436 Mod ✭✭✭✭Suaimhneach

    So true. :( Ah well.

There is a survey going around, actually I have a link for it. It's from the Su. Do it and give your opinions. :) Don't be mean though, be gentle!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

Yeh I got the email and filled in the survey (still waiting to see if i won that iPod ;)) and I said all about how the acts we get are fairly dire.

But it's true if you go spoutin' off at them and being a prink chances are it'll just get ignored. So I answered it truthfully and so did a good few people I know

We should probably actually try and get involved in the SU and try and make a difference but, meh...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

But the thing is; how do you actually get involved in the S.U.???? Do they actually take notice of the complaints? I reckon a forums like this for feedback would be the best option.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 4,436 Mod ✭✭✭✭Suaimhneach

I think they do take notice. I was talking to the Su guy, who's name escapes me right now, the red head, and he really cared bout what was happening.

I filled out the survey honestly, as well. I mean, if there is a good suggestion or recommendation, then what's the harm.

Whats to say if there is forums, taht people will even go to em like.

I guess everything is worth a try though.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

This years SU seem a lot more bothered about what people think/want.... We'll see how the rest of the year goes but at least they're doing something...

Yummy chairs in New Bar. I like that place much more now.

    Jesjes wrote:

Saying that, what's the point of us discussing this here, more than likely away from the eyes of the S.U.?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

E-mail them pointing out this board/thread.

It is a DCU resource after all. (in a manner of speaking)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

JesJes are you thinking of Damien McLoughlin (fairly sure I spelt that wrong or got the second name wrong)

I looked at the DCU website and it says the SU run their own website at http://www.dcusu.ie/ but for some reason a blank page just loads up and says done for me...

Maybe a few E-Mails after Christmas (when people are actually likely to be checking their E-Mails) to ask them what the story with the site is wouldn't go astray...

Who knows maybe there is a forum up there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭sionnach

neither www.dcusu.ie nor http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~su/ has anything on it more than a title for the blank webpages. You think they'd at least go to the effort of just listing the officers email addresses or something. It's less than 5 minutes work :s

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

See one of us should volunteer to make the website for them...

Anyone who wants to volunteer take one step forward

    /me steps backwards

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

They ran a website for a long time. It might be down over Christmas.

It hasn't run on Redbrick for a while, as far as I know. I believe it was shut down. Can't quite remember why...

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 4,436 Mod ✭✭✭✭Suaimhneach

Well, if ya read An Tarbh, [SteveD I think your right bout the name] Damien McLoughlin had basically an apology and said he'd make moreof an effort.

I don't think it's taht their not doing their job, I think it might be that they just don't know extacly what we want. Or do they know excatly how to go about giving it to us.

Maybe someone should point this out, or pass it on in an email survey thingy. No harm trying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

It's been down for at least a few months afaik.

I tried looking for something on it before we started back to college this year
