Feeling sick during/after workout

Right, basically looking for other people's experiences on this.

I've just had my routine reassessed, which usually means about 2 weeks of being utterly wrecked (though feeling good about it) after a workout. I go to the gym in the morning, before work, usually 60-75 mins after getting up (time it takes to get dressed, iron clothes, drive to work, etc).
I've never been crazy about having breakfast. I used to suffer quite badly from heartburn, and but this can still occur when I eat breakfast. Some cereals, such as Weetabix, bring it on worse than others, like Rice Krispies. It's exacerbated by exercise within 60-90 minutes of having the breakfast. So I've avoided eating breakfast, opting to have something in work after the gym.

This brings on a second problem - obviously loads of water is going in before during and after the workout. A stomach full of water an nothing else by the end of the workout. If the session has me particularly tired (like after upping the routine), I feel physically sick until I eat something. It's really bad, and if it begins to occur towards the end of the workout, I have to just stop and go get changed, I can't continue.

    Opinions?

    Hi Seamus,

I suggest lining the stomach with something an hour before your workout. If cereal doesn't work for you, then try fruit (banana is good), or a slice of brown bread, or a figroll bar... anything at all. See if that helps.

water is no good to you in your stomach. You shouldn't try and rush your hydration in the morning when instead a glass or two of water the evening before would mean less needed that morning.

Def worth getting something into your stomach, cereal bar, fruit. Lactose is really slow to digest which could be why you're having stomach issues after eating (edit:) cereal in the morning .

You need sugar to work out, that sugar ideally delivered through sustainable complex carbos. Without that you'll never be able to complete a routine satisfactorally.

I'm loath to recommend products but an isotonic drink, or even something with a liitle protein is of more use to you than plain water - especially if you're carb/sugar levels are low

I would suggest that you have a look at the health of your digestive system as well as above recommendations (without all the processed foods - cereal bars are complete junk!)

This can manifest itself in digestion problems such as indicestion, IBS, bloated stomach etc You may just need to detox or fast to allow your system to clear itself as most people will need very little in the morning anyway (break- fast).

Other wise try digestive enzymes and a good probiotic (friendly bacteria for the stomach - 60% of your available energy is used up on digestion) e.g. super 8's - all available in health stores.

Finally, if anyone has a bloated stomach i.e. its hard and you can't see your abdomainal muscles then clean the faecal waste off your intestinal walls please as the average person has beteen 4-20lbs of it caked on the inside!!!

Best of luck and keep up the workouts

Cheers guys. It's definitely not a dietary issue (anymore). I used to get really bad heartburn, but once I cut out the sugars, it all stopped. Dodgy stomachs are an hereditary trait for me!

I'll give the bananas or bread (toasted maybe) a go, as they sound like the kind of thing that I could handle easily first thing in the morning.

Uber, I definitely wouldn't be (exceptionally) dehydrated in the morning, but for the same reason I could never stomach more than 1/2 pint of water after getting up. I'll try getting up, getting some soakage and a good bit of water, then getting ready. Should give me close to an hour between eating/drinking and getting into the gym.

anyone ever use tea to hydrate themselves? I once competed in a race sponsored by some tea company who were saying it was an excellent way of hydrating yourself... as an alternative to forcing water down your throat

Seamus - you shouldn't skull the water - sipping is much better and something you should be able to do even during your gym session. I always have high5 or similar in a bottle with me in the gym

Right. Got up and went down this morning to find the bananas I'd bought on Saturday and put in the fridge were now a healthy shade of brown and frozen solid (our fridge is dodgy, and things too close to the icebox get frozen :D). Bugger. There's no bread either, because I don't eat enough to justify buying a pan or even half a pan. So I try and old favourite - two weetabix with warm-hot water. It turns into a nice mush that's easy to eat. Sipped water while I was getting ready.
My stomach was a bit dodgy on the drive in, but by the time I hit the gym it was grand. Sipping water in the gym, no problem, so it all worked out well.
I'll have to try bread. Porridge would probably be the best, but twould necessitate getting up even earlier :/
