    Well what is it?

I only have Ninja Scrolls, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Spirited Away. I like them all, although Ninja Scrolls does have one or two disturbing scenes

    Manga movie? ;)

Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke is fantastic, and dirt cheap too. Favourite series would probably be Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion.

I loved Spirited Away.I rented it out for 3 days, and watched it about 10 times. My brother got me the official cinematic poster for my room cos he works in a cinema.I watched Ghost In A Shell, but I didnt really enjoy it,because I didnt really understand it.I remember watching myb rother play the game years ago,and I remember enjoying it,but I didnt like this. And Akira...well,It still doesnt make sence after 5 times of seeing it,but I liked it all the same.I think my second favourite, after Spirited Away,is Cowboy Bebop.Great movie. Some series I like tho are GTO and The Guyver.Dark...my kinda thing.

    Spirited Away.
It's one of the prettiest movies I've ever seen.

The End of Evangelion and Spirited Away are my favourites

    do OAV's count?

Eva was cool, as were Cowboy Bebop, GITS, Akira, Princess Monoke.

Ninja Scroll or Final Fantasy are two of my favourites.

I know alot of people didn't like FF, but then again, alot of people I know didn't like Gattaca and I thought it was classic old-skool Sci-Fi.

I'd have to say Akira... as I used to watch it all the time when I was younger and I collected the entire comic book... I think it was something like 2600 pages overall...

My Neighbour Totoro has always been my favourite Studio Ghibli film.

Oh and the 2 Patlabor films are amazing... As is Wings of Honemise(I need to get that on DVD) and of course Perfect Blue.

Princess Mononoke was damn good, so was spirited away. Cant choose between em.
Metropolis was cool but its not really classic style anime.

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

    Hmm,

Laputa - Castle in the Sky,
    Spirited Away,
    Princess Mononoke,
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,
    Fist of the North Star,
    Nadesico - Prince of Darkness,
    End of Evangelion,
    Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust...

In that order, I reckon. I've a lot of favourites...

Im a fan of Armitage (yes i mainly, ok ok, i just watch it for Naomis outfits :), Cyber Cities OEDO and the Dominion Tank Police Series. The Evangelion movies were cool.
I also have one of the Street Fighter, Animated Series on dvd, very very cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

Blood: The Last Vampire was rather good :)

Grave of the Fireflies was good but really depressing

Ghibli's collection is fantastic, I abolutely loved Mononoke Hime. By the way Mononoke has been realeased in France in a ultra collector wooden box containing a statue and 2 magnificent dvds ... I have this version and can only recommend it to everyone (English subbed and dubbed as well on this dvd), it only cost 35 euros on some popular French websites and I was delivered in ireland ;)

I hate the OAV from Eva, I didn't really like the idea of doing an alternate ending just because the fan didn't like the first one, that's life that's it ;)

I recommend the latest Saint Seiya movie, Overture, a pure beauty ... so different that all the OAV that they did in the past.

Big fan of this myself, along with Totoro and Akira.

nausicaa of the valley of the wind, similar-ish to mononoke hime, but far superior and made in 1984 to boot. for many, this is hayao miyazaki's masterpiece.
    and

millennium acctress, directed by Satoshi Kon(perfect blue, tokyo godfathers) this is my favourite animated film of all time, absolutely superb!

OMG!! you read my mind :D

haven't seen Nausicaa, Nadesico or End of Evangelion but will look them up as i'm sure to like them. only other one i might add would be ninja scroll but only cause it's the only one i can seem to remember whenever anyone asks what anime i've seen.

hehe, just to be pedantic isn't manga the comics and anime the animations?:D

Yes, but if you only have access to anime sold in Ireland the distributors "Manga Entertainment" are the ones you see most frequently, so it's often confused.

Nice to see you around again Trebor; and you apparently made it to Scotland too! Kudos!

My Neighbour Totoro has always been my favourite Studio Ghibli film.

Love that movie, it's so good :)

I've always preferred series though -- '3x3 Eyes', 'Doomed Megalopolis', 'Sailor Moon', 'Macross'....

Have 'Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust' & 'Card Captor Sakura' for Christmas, can't wait :D

    3x3 Eyes isn't a series... it's a seven part OVA ;)

Well, a series of still images that we see as 'moving image'

Persistence of Vision and all that.... :D

ova/oav= original video animation/ original animated video

basically a series that was specially made to go straight to dvd in japan, higher production values than normal tv shows and generally shorter

    • Produced concurrently with Tonari no Totoro ("My Neighbour Totoro") (1988). Many of the animators had trouble remembering what film they were animating.
    • This film was initially distributed with Tonari no Totoro (1988) because it was thought that this film was so depressing that a cheerful companion film was needed to lift the audience's spirits.

Favourites. Hard to choose as I've seen a lot.

    Series/OVAa

    Azumanga Daioh. Plain hilarious
Excel Saga. Wacky to the extreme.
    Trigun. Luuuvu and peeesu
Cowboy Bebop. Who doesn't like this?
Neon Genesis Evangelion. Even though it's over analysed by Fanboys and the ending.......
    Mahoromatic
Naruto. Brainless formulaic fun that I never miss.
PlanetES. Excellent near future hard sci-fi
Lain. Great athmosphere, excellently directed and animated
Last Exile. Gonzo's anniversary work. Not a perfect ending ( but that's to be expected of Gonzo), but a great show.
Ranma 1/2 . More brainless formulaic fun.
Love Hina. Predictable harem comedy, but it's a classic.
    Galaxy Angel. Side-splittingly funny.
The Irresponsible Captain Tyler. Again hilarious with some touching moments. A perfect anime
Hellsing. Vampires, big guns and nothing much else except a terrible ending that has nothing to do with the manga, but good fun.

    Movies

Hoshi no Koe. Voices of a distant star. This is beauty wrapped in a 30 minute animation
Spirited Away. There's no need to explain this one I would hope
Grave of the Fireflies. See above.
Ghost in the Shell. Great animation. Although the plot is poor, it's still an above average anime.
    Kiki delivery Service.
Everything else Studio Ghibli. I'm not going to bother typing them out anymore.
End of Evangelion. I forgive Anno for this film just because of the scene with Asuka, the Production Eva series and J.S. Bach. ERSTE!

Ha. I don't know about evil. But that Catbus simply wasn't 'right'... it always freaks me out anyway...

I saw the Catbus in the background of the Simpsons once actually...

Didn't like this at all; seemed entirely overhyped to me. I mean, fair play to the one guy on his own who made it with Flash or something, but the animation is dodgy and the cg is awful.
And in the end it's the entertainment value that matters, not the prodution methods :) .

I adored the story. It was a sappy tale of love across an impossible divide. The character designs didn't fit and were too simplistc, but apart from that I was more than happy with the animation.

I'm really looking forward to Beyond the Clouds, Makoto Shinkai's next work that's due out very soon.

I forgot this one for my list. It's an excellent movie, even if it is tainted by the totally out of place attempted rape scene ( and the WOMEN apologising the next morning ).

You may have thought that you were missing out on something, but you weren't. Vampire Hunter D is about as deep as a snowdrift in the Ivory Coast.
Girl in trouble. Big stereotypical quiet loner hero guy arrives. Girl gets kidnapped by ultra vampire and kicks crap out of D. D uses super powers to win.
But it wasnt really the story that turned me off it, it was the clumsy animation and the frankly sub-par design of the
hundreds of monsters that for some poorly contrived reason lived in Magnus' castle

I liked GITS but I thought they dragged the end out a bit much, feeling they had to explain exactly that had happened when everyone I was watching it with knew before she/it started talking. Poor ending couldn't spoil a good movie though.

If there is only one thing i can say that is good about censorship it's that the Manga version of this film with the attampted rape scene cut out is a much better film. It really wasn't needed. They should have left it out and let the pervy members of the audience get their rape scene thrills from elsewhere.

But that sort of scene is something Gainex like to do alot isn't it?

If you watch and episode of Evangelion that doesn't have a scene that makes you cringe with shame and embarrassment for one of the characters, you'll feel short changed...

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

I'd rather watch a series/movie on my own, late at night than watch it censored.

If I'm going to watch something I don't really want anyone other than the creator deciding what I should and shouldn't see.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,394 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I prefer my films uncensored but that scene is so out of place in the film it really is better off without it. I agree with monkeyfudge about the same sort of scenes in evangelion and how they made me feel about the characters but when I finally saw the uncut version I didn't feel embarassed for Shiro. I just didn't have any respect for him to the point of hating him for what he did.

Well actually, the alternate ending is much closer to the original ending planned by the maker. The tv studio forced the anime team to make the ending they used for tv cause the materials contained in the script was unsuitable for tv or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

    End of Eva
    Spirited Away
    Patlabor
    Castle of Cagliostro

Ninja Scroll is totally over-rated imo.
Ghost In The Shell is not that great either, although Stand Alone Complex is my favourite series, can't get enough of it.
Berserk is another series that I really like, just fantastic.

I wish they would do so more Berserk,
massive cliff hanger ending, so you have to go and find the manga to find out what happened.
