I'm bored, and my local (college based) society has wound down for Chrimbo. I need gaming like addicts need crack, so a play-by-post game might be just the ticket.

I'm an unashamed Warhammer 40,000 fan, and have a few scenarios written up to that end. I'd be more than happy to run these, and write up a couple extra ones to get an overall story going, if anyone wants to play...

I'd need at least four players, and no more than six (anything more is a nightmare for me to manage). I was either going to have everyone as a Space Marine, or Imperial Guardsman, but things are always open and I'm prone to changing my mind if a better idea presents itself.

For anyone not familiar with the 40K setting, I can write up a quick summary later. It's beautifully dark, nasty, bloody and high-tech gothic, and I love it to bits.

Looking over the old SLA game run here in the past, I like the format and would run it fairly similar to that.

So, anyone interested? Pretty much everything is written up, including a few characters, so if enough people sign up I could be ready to kick off by the end of the week...

I heartily endorse this service and/or product. Never played 40k myself, but I tried to get into Warhammer fantasy once...

It's a bit like a really high-tech, galaxy-spanning Nazi Germany. Masses of xenophobia, suspicion, harsh, brutal laws, and superstition. And killing. It's great! :D

Right, to business. It's going to be special ops, Dirty Dozen-style shenanigans. There are a few character types readily available, from cold-blooded sniper to zealous fanatic with a flamethrower, to renegade tech-priest. When you sign up, tell me which kind you'd like. First come, first served. You'll all have basic infantry skills, and you can have one major and one minor specialty, like communications, demolitions, assault, heavy weapons, driving... The list is really too big for here. Give me an idea of what you want, and I'll make you a character to suit it. I'm working off the GURPS system for this, so if you're familiar with it, go ahead and send me details to make the process quicker.

I know the world from reading the short stories, I heart them.

Do we PM you details, or post here?

Post what you want to play here, first come first served. The specifics can be worked out via PM.

Major: Demolitions (I just like blowing things up!)
    Minor: Communications

i'd like to apply for the position of zealous fanatic with a flamethrower, specifically a Deathwatch marine if at all possible

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

No marines, I'm afraid. You're all wimpy Guardsmen. :) But the flamethrower is not a problem. Name a major and minor specialty, and we're halfway there...

can i be a priest type dude? (haven't played 40k in ages otherwise i'd have a more technical term)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Sure. That would take up a specialty slot. And "priest type dudes" in 40K are most likely to lead by example, charging straight at the enemy and shouting hymns of cleansing hatred, so assault and close combat would take up the other.

So which do you want to be best at? Theology or killing up close?

Sigh, I love those guys... :)

    Major: Religious rants and raves
    Minor: hacking things to bits

    Right, so far I have-

    Raphael: Demolitions/Comms.

    Zounds: Spiritual well-being(:D)/Assault.

    Names, guys?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Zounds

Praetor Argeus Roe (i'm not sure if Ordo Hereticus actually has praetors, that title just sounds cool :D )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

I'll stick with Raphael Korland, my generic pseudonym

So the padre has a flamer...could be fun

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Failure to have fun with the flamethrower will result in court-martial, followed by summary execution.

Oooooo....I'd love to play but am too tied up with Diddlysquat.ie these days :(

Played the odd-ball 40k game at Gaelcon. 'twas fun. Big guns, mucho mayhem.

    Have fun

Is there any positions open as Commissars? (sp?)

Haven't had a chance to play 40K in years! Got horribly addicted to DOW tho, and it brought back all my old memories of my Blood Angel days before I found the Eldar and the Necrons...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

I suppose I could fit in a Commissar, but seeing as you'll either be Catachans (highly independant) or Penal Legion (scum, resentful of Imperial authority) troops, you wouldn't be popular. :) Another option might be the team sergeant? Tough and (allegedly) in charge...

Sarky can you PM me when your ready i'll setup the threads that you can play the game in,

sounds like a deadly game sorry im tied up in other stuff i'll be watching the game tho seems cool

So, Raphael, Zounds, and Nesf so far.

I'd like a fourth, if possible, but can pop in a generic placeholder character to keep numbers up until then if people would rather start soon. I'll give it until the end of the week, and after that, I'll have an NPC there. Anyone wanting in afterwards will have to wait until the NPC is killed off. :)

FYI, I've decided on a Penal Legion setting, seeing as that will require much less alteration of things on my part. I want to see scumbag characters of the most degenerate foulness! :D

    PM sent, welcome. :)

I have rough character drafts for Raphael and Zounds, I'll try to send them over tomorrow. If Nesf could get back to me with some preferred specialties I can get everything ready to kick off Monday evening?

Ah yes, times. I'm hoping for one or two game sessions a week. I can guarantee a presence here on most weekday afternoons/evenings, and some strange times on weekends (stupid random job hours).

What would everyone prefer? I can do two or even three sessions a week. I'm thinking Monday and Wednesday, and maybe some time during the weekend (I can give a week's notice what day/time on weekends)?

So, two sessions minimum each week sometime late afternoon to evening, how's that?

Full time education pwns, I'm on here pretty much every evening

And by pretty much, I mean...Every evening

Can I still get into this game?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

PM sent. Quickly now, I think you're the last player I'll allow. I think 5 is plenty. Still waiting on contact from Nesf and Thegogz though, so blame them for any delays. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

    And the latest reads at-

    Raphael (Raphael Korland): Demolitions/Comms.

    Zounds (Argeus Roe): Imperial Ministry/Assault
(You can call yourself a Praetor if you want, but you're still a filthy convict. :) )

Thegogz (No name as yet): Heavy weapons/Medic

    Qwertz (Vollbart): Stealth/Sniping

    Nesf: ?????

When do we start, when do we start?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Nesf had to withdraw for now, so I can fit you in, Gmt. Welcome. Check your PMs for details.

I'm waiting for the go ahead from Al][en before kicking off. Hopefully it'll be soon. I apologise for not being around Monday, it was a result of working nights and not setting an alarm and waking up around half five in the evening...

    Happens all the time. :)

Anyway, as promised to some of you, here's a little description of the background you'll be playing in, which I wrote WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS.

With the discovery of Warp space (an alternate dimension, composed entirely of energy instead of matter), mankind's expansion across the stars became rapid. We developed miraculous technology and weapons, and were as gods, pushing back alien threats, and colonising most of the galaxy. This period was known as the Dark Age of Technology, because man virtually sold his soul to science and technology. Nobody knew how high the price would eventually be.

Then came Psykers. Humans who for some reason developed the ability to manipulate Warp space with their minds. This supposedly amazing leap of evolution was disastrous for Mankind, because the Warp also has its inhabitants, malevolent beings who were born of man's hopes and fears, capable of traversing the link between the Warp and a psyker's mind. Many Psykers became possessed and laid waste to entire planets in their insanity and lack of knowledge of their abilities. the resulting chaos weakened human civilisation, allowing alien races once defeated to exact their revenge on their victors. Humanity fell apart, and most worlds degenerated into anarchy and near-stoneage culture. Only people with rigid self-discipline, or worlds where Psykers were vigorously suppressed, survived.

The arrival of the Emperor marked the return of mankind's former glory. A Psyker of immense power and self-control, He appeared on humanity's home planet of Terra and quickly united the world under his banner. He then started the Great Crusade of reconquest across the galaxy. He unlocked the secrets of life and created the Primarchs, near-godlike beings with incredible power, and the Space Marines, superhuman warriors bred from the genes of the Primarchs. With these mighty warriors the Emperor reconquered vast amounts of the galaxy and established the sacred Imperium of Man, the largest, most powerful domain in the galaxy today.

But the Emperor was betrayed. His first Primarch, and His most trusted general, the Warmaster Horus, was seduced by the foul gods of Chaos, rulers of Warp Space, and led to believe that he should be the rightful Emperor of humanity. He turned traitor along with fully half of the other Primarchs and their Space Marines, and the Imperium was consumed by civil war. The Emperor eventually slew the blasphemous traitor Horus in a mighty battle as Terra itself was besieged, but was Himself mortally wounded. The forces of Chaos retreated bitterly to the Eye of Terror, a breach in realspace where the Warp spews out energy and corruption, and time is meaningless. The technomages of the Adeptus Mechanicus built The golden Throne, a massive and incredible device, to preserve the Emperor's life so He could continue to rule. Mere mortals such as ourselves saw this as the Emperor's Ascension, and the creed of The Emperor Deified became the Imperium's religion.

This was ten thousand years ago. Today, it is the forty first milennium, and little has changed. Humanity is constantly at war with aliens, mutants, heretics, rebels, and the Forces of Chaos, the very same traitors who were defeated centuries ago. It is a time rife with superstition and suspicion, and every day is a struggle for survival where millions die in battle. Life is by necessity harsh, for the Imperium must be strong and strict if humanity is to survive. The death sentance, and worse, is common for many offences considered trivial milennia ago.

But often the Imperium cannot afford to execute criminals, such is the need for soldiers to keep its enemies at bay. For this reason the Penal Legions of the Imperial Guard were created. Here, criminals are sent to fight for the Imperium they betrayed, in the remote hope that by doing so they might redeem themselves. To disobey is certain death, but to fight offers a slim chance of survival. The Penal Legions are populated with some of the worst scum of the Emperor's domain. Murderers, black marketeers, heretics, petty thieves, and the occasional innocent who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    People like you.
